So I can be a little obsessive…

I wanted to know what River was hearing at the beginning of Objects in Space before she woke up from hearing Early’s thoughts. I have had some experience in audio engineering, so I captured the audio from the DVD and then put in an audio editor. I raised the volume, filtered out the background noise, compressed, raised the volume some more, it slowed it down 20% and listened to it for about an hour.

Some of the voices overlap, but here is what I was able to conjure up.

Jayne: It’s ok honey, I gotta have it.

Kaylee: How can it see~~….

Zoe: Let’s just serve it to Sam.

Jayne: ~pleese~ on the floor, lots of it, got to have it.

Inara: .~do something about the blood.

Early: We’re all just floating

Now most of it seems nonsense, though remember it is River hearing random thoughts from the crew.

Jayne’s is the most obvious, all sex, all the time.
Zoe is very distinct in what she said. No clue in what it means.
Inara was difficult to decipher at first, her comment is what got me started, while watching the episode, I thought she said, “I think I am in love,” which I know now is not was said.
Kaylee’s line is very faint and is lost behind Jayne and Zoe’s lines.

I could upload the file, I saved it in a .wav file, but I can’t figure out how to upload a non image file here. If someone wants to host it, I can email the file.

Anyone does.

I wonder if it could tie in with the theory that Inara has some loathesome disease?

Or could it be a recollection of some incident that led to her leaving the Chapter House? Some have suggested that she killed a client, either accidentally or by assassination.

I wonder whether these lines were written for this show, or were perhaps snippets from the cutting room floor, lines filmed but not used in earlier episodes? Maybe Inara's line came from the pilot, when Kaylee was shot. (But it's not in the shhoting scrpt for that episode.)

Jayne's lines could be outtakes from House of Gold.

TRAVELER

Joss does so much with River. She may be hearing random thoughts or past memories. I'm sure she does not know herself at times. Like where did she get the gun? We never see her enter Jayne's cabin, yet it is his pistol. Does she get the gun because she knows danger is approaching in the form of Early? Like the song "Searching for mysteries without any clues." That is how I see River.

I've listened to it several times, not the best quality but I can make out a few words. The main problem is the different people's words are layered over each other. However, I don't think what Hera7 posted about Jayne is right. I am almost positive his second line is "He's seen it before, lot's of it," which is a reply to Inara's about the blood. I think those two lines at least are the same as what Jayne and Inara were saying as Mal regained consciousness at the end of "Out of Gas." But judge for yourself.

I converted the wav file to an mp3 without any discernible difference in the audio, but it's a smaller file. Even though it will load rather quickly if you click on the link, I would prefer if you right click and "save as" if you use Windows, or whatever the appropriate Mac command is.

Oh, that's creepy. And, I think you're right about Jayne's second line.

I thought that the whole set of Dream Voices was just lifted straight out of "Out of Gas" from the point where Mal is just waking up near the end.

If I'm not mistaken, part of the OOG dream voices is someone offering to scrape some cake off the floor. I would be interested if an audio of that could be captured and the two compared.

Then, of course, Early's voice shocks River awake. Yes, I also thought that unfamiliar voice sent her off looking for a weapon with which to defend the ship. How did she get it? We hear Jayne talking about how he doesn't leave his guns lying around. and something was mentioned about a combination for the gun locker. I think she just lifted the combination from Jayne's mind.

Hey Hera7, could you do the same thing for the bit from OoG? It would be neat to compare, because Inara and Jayne are definately talking about blood there. And yeah, it is Wash and Zoe talking about scraping up some cake.

Here is what I could hear in Out of Gas from when Mal passed out to when Zoe noticed he was awake. The first part is before we hear engine and infirmary noise. There is a slight echo in the audio, making it seem like a dream sequence.

Salesman Slim: A real beauty ain’t she. Yes, sir.

Kaylee: Serenity’s not movin’.

Wash: When your miracle gets here, pound this button once and call everybody home.

Inara: Mal, come with us

Mal: Everybody dies alone.

Now we are in the infirmary, Mal is waking up

Wash: I’ll run up there and scrape up a piece

Zoe: (chuckle) You do that for me?

Wash: I’d do anything for you, you know that.

Unintelligible background: Jayne and Inara?

Wash: ~Hey you pretty lady~

Inara: I think its something he should see when he wakes up.

Jayne: He’s seen blood before, lots of it.

Zoe: Welcome back, sir.

Wash's line of ~hey you pretty lady~ was difficult to understand, it may be something different. That is why I use the ~ symbol, to indicate it is not clear enough to be absolutely sure of the line.

I'll forward the file to be posted with the other one so you can hear the audio. Audio forensics is a difficult thing to do with out specialized equipment, but I think I got all that I could out of this one.

Kaylee's line in OiS sounds more to me like, "I don't think it's something..." Then Zoe's line drowns her out.

Yes, the Inara line gives me chills. Especially as the sound intensifies along with Jayne's "Gotta have it."

Spookiness...

When we saw the gun from Rivers POV, it was a stick. She did not seem (to me) to be thinking of the gun as a weapon. I think she was just playing with it. If she knew about Early, she would have tried to warn her brother, like when they re-entered Serenity in Bushwacked.

She may have been suspicious that something was up (Wash noticed something odd, too), but not enough to try to warn people.

Yeah, that's what I've usually got from it, but that's mainly because the only one I hear is Inara's "I really think we should do something about that blood," which is from when Mal is first waking up in Out of gas.

Okay, sorry but I just needed to correct this, but I believe Jayne's line is the one from out of gas: "he's seen blood before, lots of it", and Inara's from out of gas is "I don't think it's something he should see when he wakes up" She's refering to the blood...

Yeah, what I meant was that I thought the line from Objects in Space was the one from Out of Gas...or at least that's just what I've always got from it....

Well, I don't think that River KNEW what she was doing during all of this. I believe that some part of her had taken over, but the part of River whose POV we got was clueless.

I really liked seeing River's POV. I imagine that she ALWAYS sees the world like this.

It just occurred to me the as she seems to have got the gun in a public area (the cargo hold), she may simply have seen someone open the gun locker before. After all, a few minutes later (our time) she was secretly listening in on the crews discussion about her.

I recently came across an article about using the Second Life VR world to give people the experience of schizophrenia. It sounded very like Rivers POV in OiS.

I think you are probably right – she usually does see the world like this. No wonder she is so confused.

Quote:

From the Economist:

Peter Yellowlees, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Davis, has been teaching about schizophrenia for 20 years, but says that he was never really able to explain to his students just how their patients suffer. So he went online, downloaded some free software and entered Second Life...
Mr. Yellowlees created hallucinations. A resident might walk through a virtual hospital ward, and a picture on the wall would suddenly flash the word "shitface". The floor might fall away, leaving the person to walk on stepping stones above the clouds. An in-world television set would change from showing an actual speech by Bob Hawke, Australia's former prime minister, into Mr Hawke shouting, "Go and kill yourself, you wretch!" A reflection in a mirror might have bleeding eyes and die.

I wonder what a crowd look like to River? Perhaps I should feel lucky I do not know…

That reminds me of the computer/video game Vampire-Bloodlines. The Malkavian player character is insane, has interesting insights on what is happening and speaks in a way that makes others uneasy. That character alone makes a B- game an A- rating. I'd give examples, but it is better off experienced first hand with out prior knowledge.

Of course I'm a bit insane myself...
