Just watched "Objects in Space" again. Did Jayne know something was going on and just pull the covers over his head or not? At one point it seemed that everyone on the ship could hear River talking; at other times she was able to talk to people individually (Kaylee, Mal) but in the end I couldn't tell if Jayne knew what was going on or not.

I think he knew something woke him up, I don't think he knew something was happening. He just wanted to sleep.

Of course Jayne is hiding. Jayne is afraid of everything and takes every opportunity to avoid that of which he is afraid. So when River tells him to stay in his bunk, that's what he does.

This changes for the Moovie, but then so much does.

I wouldn't say he's afraid. He definitely isn't going to go fight anybody on River's behalf though. "Bounty hunter wants the crazy knife wielding psychic chick bounty hunter can have the crazy knife wielding psychic chick," is I think Jayne's most likely thought process here.

Jayne was completely oblivious. He slept thru the whole thing.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."

I'm with evildinosaur:
something woke up Jayne and he didn't know or care what it was (except that he wished people would keep it down) and he want back to sleep.

Remember folks, they were way out on the edge, they thought they were alone... there was no reason to believe he would have a chance to fight a cool Bobafett guy (something he would love to do, IMO)
no, I think he figured that River was throwing things... or something else was going on he had no reason to care about.

But of course the REAL reason was that Joss didn't think that River would want to use Jayne in her plan (just as she didn't want to use Zoe either...)
River wanted NO Guns, so that leaves out the crew members who primarily play with guns.
Mal had to be convinced to play it her way, but I think he quickly saw the advantage of luring Early off the ship as quicly and quietly as possible.

He obviously didn't have a clue of what was happening, remember how pissed off he was at the end of the ep that he slept through the whole attack? (he's talking to Book while they start lifting weights).
I wonder what Jubal would have said to him...

Don't think Jubal would have said anything. He'd have shot him, bullet in the brainpan, squish. There's only one person on that ship capable of taking Early hand to hand, and the man would have neutralized that threat first off. (He didn't wait for Book to get squared up, either. Funny, that...)

I think Jayne slept through it. And the drool on the pillow was a nice touch.

I think Jubal may have tried to convince Jayne to try and help him secure River - maybe he'd end up being the one who would "make the money right."

Jayne may have fought Jubal, but he wouldn't have done it to defend River or Simon, he'd have done it because Jubal was an intruder in his house or maybe because Jubal had threatened and/or attacked his fellow crewmembers - the one thing I've always noted about Jayne was how he wasn't going to be everyone else's janitor - he refrained from assisting in the bar fight at the beginning of Train Job, because he "didn't fight in any war," he was never big on putting himself at risk on behalf of the Tams (especially in Safe and the BDM) and he wasn't in favor of scamming the Alliance to protect Tracy in "The Message." But he was ready to grease Dobson after he shot Kaylee in the pilot, despite the consequences that could/would result from killing a Fed.

If Jayne didn't make the mess, Jayne wasn't going to clean the mess up.

Reading this thread and all the insights provided in the responses, there may be a possible combination of all theories.
River may have influenced Jayne in his sleep to stay right where he was. She knows what kind of man Jubal is, and as it was pointed out earlier in this thread, he would most certainly eliminate those who were an immediate threat.
As another poster pointed out, Jayne would not exactly put himself out for the Tams, but that doesn't mean River wouldn't. She was trying her best to keep guns out of the equation, and keeping Jayne out of the way would be a prudent choice if that was a goal.
Jayne commented at the end that he was miffed he didn't get a chance to join in the fight. If he had been, things may have gone horribly wrong. And Ariel was not that far off in the past when Jubal Early came calling. River may have had some misgivings about Jayne being involved in her "departure" from the ship.
Or he could have just been really sleepy.

All River needed was for someone to stand outside the airlock and give Jubal a push, and she already had Mal to do that.

Extra people (Jayne, Zoe etc) would just make things more complicated, and therefore more likely to go wrong.

Having to worry about Simon gave her problems enough, without adding to them.

That's right--because our world is static and unchanging. People never grow or change (for the better or for the worse), switch jobs, move, or even make new memories or have new experience. How unreasonable that those things do happen from Firefly to Serenity.

TERRI

I personally think that Jayne just didn't care. I mean, he's been changing a little bit, but I imagine that he hasn't changed enough to put his neck on the line for the Tam siblings. Even more, he probably didn't even recognize the threat enough to do something about it. Or just didn't care.
