...... Wash in the movie??? To be honest with you I have only been a Firefly/ Serenity fan for the last 2 weeks!!!! lol I'd never really heard about it before..... I know, I know.... gasps of shock and pure horror.... BUT I'm totally hooked.

My brother bought the DVD's about a month ago, and I pinched them from him 'cause I'm off work sick at the moment and what can I say. I looooooove it. With the exception that they killed off Wash my favourite character! I couldn't believe it when I watched Serenity the Movie this morning..... I was crying like a baby! Why oh Why did they kill him off? He was sooooooo cute and funny.

If they ever make another series or movie, I don't think it will ever be the same again without the comic dynamic that Wash bought to the team.

I know this is a few years too late but better late than never:

R.I.P. Wash...... I'll miss you.

Welcome to the 'verse Jollie36 - hurts doesn't it. I guess that makes you a Browncoat

Check out the Serenity Now screening nearest where you live - yep, the Big Damn Movie's on the Big Damn Screen in June in a city near you.

To help cope with the ache rewatch the series and celebrate both Wash and Book's characters along with the rest of the crew on the shinyest boat in the 'verse.

This might raise your spirits:

Sorry as you can see from the above post I was pre-occupied.

I promise to be a good little girl and check out the sites that you have recommened and find out when the movie is playing on the big screen either in or around Melbourne. The only thing that will TOTALLY embarrass the living daylights out of me is that I know that I will cry like a baby when Wash gets it

I almost couldn't stand it when he was being tortured in 'War Stories'.... the poor darling!

I know that the only other person that I'll be able to go to see it with will be my brother... because no one else 'gets it' and he'll be like if you know what I mean. hahaaaa

Anyway..... I hope you will accept my appology.

Getting back to your original question: Joss Whedon is known for killing off fan favorite characters. It's a way to increase the emotional impact of the story he's telling. (It seems to have worked for you!)

In the case of Wash and the BDM, his sudden and inevitable loss let the audience know that the situation was ultra-dangerous for all our Big Damn Heroes. It racheted up the risk factor and suspense level. After that, anyone or everyone might have died -- and most of them nearly did.

It doesn't make it any less painful, but it gives Wash's death meaning on a certain level. On a different level, it ensured that all the rest of the characters were solid in their resolve to carry out the plan.

If it makes you feel any better, Joss has said that he will find a way to bring Book and Wash back, if there is a sequel. My opinion is that he means via flashbacks, since I doubt he will "resurrect" either character.

If there ever is a sequel.. The opening scene will be Wash waking up in an Alliance hospital.

Count on it.

Ive noticed that after he was speared, they had to leave him behind... but reavers don't like 'dead' bodies so they would leave him too.

Now that leaves the alliance crew that came and I'm thinking they're guna pick up someone from the crew of the ship they have been chasing for the better part of a year.

Obviously.. through 'advanced medical blah blah' they keep him alive and once the 'blueies' get a hold of him he is interrogated.

Somehow the crew finds out (be it River or wash getting a message out) and they go into rescue mode.. upon the rescue attempt we find out how evil blue sun really is and we have a sequel and then possibly a third...

Oh No!!!!!! Not Collingwood!!!!

Now Essendon!!!!!

But seriously...... I like that scenario about Wash being rescued by the Alliance and the crew of Serenity having to rescue them after River telepathically gets a message from him.

Yes we can also get some more insight about the evil Blue Sun Corporation and then we will have a sequil that should be quite interesting....

......but most importantly Wash would be back!!!!! Yay!

Take care all

Meant to post about this the other day, and I forgot.

A while back there was a thread here about small changes that would have had a big effect on the 'Verse.

One of my favorites--

Wash: " I am a leaf on the wind, watch how--"

Mal: "Wash, duck."

Wash: " OK, I am a duck on the wind. Watch-"

Squish!

Sorry, but I can't see Alliance soldiers, those who have just barely survived the harrowing battle in space with the Reavers and having a mind set on capturing/killing the crew of the ship that has caused them so much trouble, stopping to recover Wash's impaled dead body and then resuscitating him to get 'information'. 'Information' on what?
They are after River Tam and they know where she is. They want her alive if possible but could care less about the dead pilot. They have no need for any of Serenity's crew alive any longer at this point. Remember, these soldiers were about to open fire on the crew and would have if the Operative had not ordered them to "stand down". Their fingers squeezing the triggers is all I need to know that they would have no need for any of the crew alive for 'information'.
Plus, don't you think our BDM's would have noticed Wash's body was missing when they all returned to Serenity? That would be a bit too much for Joss to have 'just left out' of the movie. Why would they hold a memorial service if they did not have a body to bury or cremate?
The 'only' way to set up the stage to bring Wash back in a movie sequel/future TV series via Alliance resuscitation/new organs theory, was to have the crew return to the ship and find his body missing and delete the memorial service scene at the end. Seeing the empty bloody chair 'could' set up the assumption that his body was taken by the Reavers or possibly the Alliance. But, we'd need to see the empty chair in the BDM to make any Wash come back plausible, even by Sci Fi standards.
BUT, I still see no reason for the Alliance to take Wash's dead body, so the whole 'Wash' comeback story line is silly.
Like you, I loved Wash and hated to see him die in the film. But he is gone, will be sorely missed, but Serenity will go on without him.
Now, I would love to see Joss go back to TV with Firefly and take off where the series itself ended, with the full crew back on board and tie up all those loose ends/adventures dealing with Book and Blue Sun. This could be done very easily.

oouch...

obviously I was pulling at straws and damned if you havent put me back in my corner.

I will say this.. doesnt have to be a body to have a funeral.

Crew comes back, sees Wash is gone and is right to assume the Reavers picked him up. and what about Book? Don't think they went back for his body.

As far as the soldiers about to pull the trigger, that is River Tam we are talking about, they know what she can do, they know what she knows, that is just panic stations for that garrison. They could have easily picked up Wash before hand (prior to them knowing that they would run into the crew) because that is what they were ordered to do before hand.

It makes sense (in my head anyway) to pick up and secure anyone off a ship that the whole alliance has been chasing for the better part of a year.

This can all be cleared up with a quick flash back moment :)

This scenario has a LOT of "ifs" in it but what I always imagined what happened to Wash is that he actually survived and like the guy in "Bushwacked" became a Reaver himself. Months after the events of the movie (assuming that some Reavers survived the massive Alliance vs. Reaver battle in Serenity) the crew of Serenity ran afoul of Reavers again, one of which was the Reaverized Wash. Zoe recognizes him shoots him in the leg to keep him alive and brings him aboard the ship and tries to reverse the Reaver-ism with good old fashioned will power and love. Eventually Wash comes out of it but still isn't quite right (think a male version of River but with Reaver instincts). Might make for a passable fanfic...

I agree. It may sound harsh, but I'd rather not have Wash back at all than some kind of weird half reaver, half person, crazy guy. What about the jokes? We all know he's the funny one. Seriously, tho, I'd rather have almost anything (dead, alive, in River's body) than some kind of weird half reaver, half person, crazy guy.

Another problem I'd like to point out is the obvious: HE'S DEAD!!!

It's sad, but true and I don't see how anyone can do anything with him anymore. All the reavers could do is gnaw on his insides and sew his flesh to their faces, but I don't think they could reaver-ize him.

I read a really terrific fanfic on this very sight that could bring Wash back in a plausable plotline. It was called "Wish I was Somebody Else" I think .... it was a little while back and I've slept since then. Anyway, in this story, it wasn't even the real Wash that got killed. It was a Wash look-a-like Alliance plant. The real Wash was being held in prison the whole time during his 'death' and the other members of the crew stumble across the info through DNA and then proceed to find the real Wash. I'd be willing to stretch my imagination a little bit to the other side of 'not likely' to have Wash back, but this story was really quite solid. Ya'll should check it out.

lol, that's the first time I've heard that one. Anyway, if anyone's smart enough to figure out a plausible reason for Wash to come back (and hopefully Book for that matter), it's the Whedon-miester. He could always do what he did to bring Buffy back, and just bring him back through magic. You know, for Buffy and Angel being his last two shows, there's surprisingly little magic in Firefly.

Ok everybody CRAZY4MAL is close to the "Bullseye" on this one. As you all know Joss W. and I are pretty good buddies so here's the unknown truth of the matter ( I shouldn't be telling you guys this but we're browncoats and I like you) Peter Seller was substituted for Wash while the crew were back on Miranda. Remember all thoes faces Wash was making while flying Serenity back to Mr. Universes planet? Well that was actually Peter flying. “The border wasn't meant to be crossed. The land beyond is sour.”

We can’t bring Wash back because then he would be evil!

I never really had a problem with Wash’s death. Aside from Alan being the best actor of the bunch, I’m not sure what Wash really provided to the story apart from basically comic relief. And Alan wanted to be killed off.

Now Book on the other hand – he had some stories to tell. I guess I’m in the minority here though.

Well, I as I'm sure others have, noticed a way for your idea to be ver plausible.

First, Niska's machine in War Stories, if it could've brought Mal back, why not Wash. And for the matter of crushed organs, that's exactly what Tracey in The Message was smuggling.

I'm just saying its possible.

More possibility if everyone buys the SERENITY COLLECTORS EDITION!!! Need some advertisement somewhere. :p

It was an Alliance plot back on Miranda to infiltrate Mal's crew of lawless pirates even further. The proof's below:

So there you have it. Wash is safe and hiding out on Miranda. I'll be posting this in the BSR and maybe on other FF sites as well.

Excuse my french, but what the piss are you talking about? Who is Peter Seller and what does he have to do with any of this? Why would Wash stay on Miranda? O_o

I am 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% sure he is pulling your leg. :P

Peter Seller's an actor, I think. From our times. ;)

Anyway, about what you said about your brain not "unlocking" for a while when poor Wash got offed- it was the same for me when I saw the movie for the first time (completely unspoiled) during the original theatrical run. I was like "wait, wait waiaiaiaatsadhasfjdhfy7e WHAT!?!"

And the little itty bitty part of my frontal lobe that normally is so good and so very clever at looking ahead and seeing that yeah, Mal and River won't die because of their character arcs, and probably no one else from the crew 'sides Book who's already dead anyway, will either because hey, they're the BDHs, right? That part of my brain?

Completely thrown for a loop and put completely helter-skelter by the fact that Wash - Wash, for God's sake, Mr. Lighthearted Funny Comic Relief Guy - got killed. And not JUST killed - killed quick, and brutal, and in his supposed moment of triumph, right when you think it's a nice little comedown moment from the gut-wrenching crash scene and you think it's going to be all right and a beat, for that beautiful poignant final words which you don't even realize are final words yet but then WHAMBOOMDEADWASHNOOOOOZOE LOOKOUT! AAAAAHH WTF*#$*#&$&#$# WHAT JUST HAPPENED NOOOOOOOWAAAAAASH!!!?

In short, yes, scrambled my brains too. :P Which after the showing was over, made me sort of in awe of Joss. I mean, I was an adult when I watched it, and cynical at that. Yet the whole climax of the film after that point's a bloody nailbiter, because you have this sickening, horrible feeling anyone could die, even if logic and conventions of storytelling tell you otherwise. It absorbs you, rips you out of your skull and plunks you down in the middle of it and you are there, right next to them, watching them about to die, one by one thinking you're losing them, and your brain just can't think straight, because everybody's dying around you and you don't have time to react because it's happening so gorram fast... and then, the tables turn for our heroes one by one too, though - and suddenly, we see our little ninja ballerina and she is in her element, and she kicks psychotic space cannibal posterior and she does it with such efficiency and yet beauty, such grace, and your heart just swells with elation as her body arcs backwards gracefully, taking three out at once almost effortlessly and then the rest of the... and... then glorious backlight... and... yeah.

I remember coming out of seeing it for the first time, after having watched all or most of Firefly, and I remember being just completely, utterly blown away by it. Just the sheer, raw, emotional momentum and the brutal, gut-wrenching twists and the beauty and (appropriately enough) serenity of the finale and just... blown away. Totally blown away. I was babbling like a nut afterwards, just totally in love, and this is AFTER I started getting somewhat obsessed with the series. Hell, the BDM made me fall in love with live-action feature film as a medium, for the first time, because no other feature film had ever managed to affect me quite like it, and I was just completely amazed anybody could pull it all off in what I (an animation fan) had thought was such a limited medium! Let alone based on a cancelled TV series by Joss Whedon, who has a tendency to create massively complex mythologies! I saw it with my parents, who had hardly seen the series at all, and then only in just bits and pieces, and they walked out of it saying it was a great movie (which was particularly good, because I had tried to convince them to go to the movies earlier, but they wanted to go to Oktoberfest... which in our neck of the woods, it turns out, was a complete ripoff, and we ended up going to the movies anyway, because of that, and Serenity had the fortune of starting right when we got to the theater, and don't ask how I managed to convince them to see it when most of my description consisted of things like "Cowboys in space, kinda, except they speak Chinese!", but I did somehow, and they ended up loving it).

It's my favorite movie ever, for a damn good reason. :D And it actually makes me elated again, to see someone describe pretty much the exact same thing I went through. This is why I love being a fan of things in this day and age! So much easier to connect and find common ground...

pulling my leg? that's not very nice -_-

peter sellers is an actor (pink panther) but theres no one named peter seller :-P 'least not that i know of.

Totally agree with the rest of what you said. What continues to blow my mind about the series is the fact that it was so unconventional and so new, unlike anything seen before on tv...and they cancelled it. As you said, cowboys in space, sorta, and they speak Chinese. Who in their mother would have thought of that? Ever? Even I've never thought of anything like that and I'm a writer!! The whole style, the fact that it's futuristic but it's rugged, not necessarily high tech or sleek or sophisticated as everyone depicts the future of mankind being. I LOVE that about Firefly.

I understood that the choicve of Wash to off was because he is just toooo busy in other movies and broadway and such - they were apparently just barely able to fit in his work on BDM between his other engagements.
On the other hand, if he became a reaver, didn't they find an antidote for the reavers - like on Miranda? Or am I recalling another story?
