A River Tam moment

I was visiting my Mother at the nursing home this last Saturday and she comes up with some odd statements.

Her mind drifts into different states. Sometimes she is in the here and now, while at other times she may believe she is back in collage.

Well I was preparing to leave and she suddenly pointed at my coat and asked, "Is that a zipper?"

Well of course it was a zipper. But it is how simple and direct she was with this question that reminded me of the way River would make the most obscure statements, but with the same directness. As in the movie when River turned to Simon and said, "I swallowed a fly" after the narrow escape from the Reavers.

I wonder where Joss gets his inspiration from when he has River just blurt out these jems. If Joss ever needs any help along these lines he may visit my mother and she will undoubtedly supply him with some, bless her soul. And besides he would enjoy her company and much as I do.

I will probably have River in the back of my mind every time, I visit my mother, from now on.

It was a surprise for me when I learned of my mother's condition. It happened so fast or I was not seeing what was going on in front of me. At first my mother simply wanted to isolate and then she would forget what day it was. I can not count how many times she asked what day it was on my last visit. There are times she seems to know where she is. She says she likes the nurses and that means she knows she is not home. But I don't know if she realises where she actually is.

I just happened to arrive when they threw a Christmas party for the patients. Mom did not want go at first. She senses something is wrong with her and does not like being in public. But when I was told I could get something to eat at the party and I told mom that I was hungry and would get something and be right back she said she might as well go too. Once there she had a good time. They try real hard to make their lives pleasant there and that reasures me she will have good care.

My mother turned 89 years old on November 8th. So she is not doing to bad for her age. I just want her to be happy. Thinking of River Tam keeps my perspective on things. The mind can be hurt but my mother is still there. The hugs are just as loving as ever.

I hear ya Stoweaway:

Age seems to have little to do with how our health will go. I was surprised my mother made it so long. I just assumed she would not have this kind of problem. But it did finally catch up with her.

Because mom lives much closer to my sister it fell on her to place my mother into the nursing home and handle her finances. She did a great job.
