I was watching my beloved episode 1 (Serenity on series) and convinced my wife that I wasn't crazy for watching it for the 50th time. My wife made an interesting comment that never occurred to me. She advised that she didn't realize that the recovered goods was actually food until Patience takes a bite out of it in the end. I'm sure everybody has realized this and this post never gets a response. However, the conceptual ingenuity that revolves around a basic food sustenance as the prime plot motive is rather striking. For some reason, I always just assumed it was food, but there really isn't anything in the conversation or scenes to explain the golden, pretty bars are actually food stuffs. There is so much bad tv out there. I continually am amazed at how good Firefly was.

I'll be in my bunk.

Except when Mal mentions that it is pure protein, vitamins and vaccinations and that it would feed a family for a month.

Except it showed that Mal wasn't always that great at improvising--I mean, if he'd kept the food and just bartered the un-Alliance-marked food he already had for other stuff they needed (or scraped off the Alliance markings, served them for dinner, and traded the rest of the brick!) at least he'd know the crew was going to stay fed for a long time.

Shoot, you want to run this ship?
I can't believe Two and a Half Men is still on and Firefly isn't? Here's to Mal.

I could stand to hear a little more.

TRAVELER

They also needed money for fuel. Kaylee also wanted replacement parts for the engine. We all know where that lead to. So food is important, but thre were many more things Mal needed hard cash for.

If one line could describe the brilliance of Joss it would be that one. It's already clever that the payload is super food. Throwing in a zinger like that to make you laugh as well....that's just Joss giving us more bang for our buck.
