Has River ever said anything in the series as aired{I'm not counting the deleted "we have to get married" scene from OMR}that was wrong? -And conversely- Has Jayne ever made a choice on his own that was right?

Don't blame me, I'm just the new guy.

Jayne showed up, armed to the teeth, when everyone else was going to rescue Mal. One could argue that he was responding to "peer pressure" or somesuch, but I tend to look at it as "protecting the man (or, rather, crew) you are with," a lesson learned from "Jaynestown" and "Ariel." He had signed on with a crew and he was going to fight with that crew.

Actually, that's just what I meant. Jayne can do and often does the right thing, but only after someone else points out what that is.
He only came thru after he realized everyone else was going, with or without him.
I'm not saying Jayne's stupid, but that his moral compass is turned around 180 degrees

You might interpet Jayne knocking over his statue as doing something "right". He knew that it was wrong (i.e. a lie per se) even though he never truly understood the mudders need for it.

Also, I don't think he was acting selfishly or for appearances sake in War Stories when he chipped in cash to buy Mal and Wash back from Nishka. When then went in later he had some prompting, but I believe he would have made that decision on his own given a little time to ponder the situation.

Lastly, he sends money home to his mother.

I think probably the most telling is when he sealed the vents in Out of Gas. It wasn't something he was told to do, yet something that could have altered Mal's fate.

Well I was talking more about moral decisions than practical, but on to the other side. Has River ever been wrong about one of her "crazy" statements?
Does this mean that the ones we don't understand just haven't been made clear yet?

When faced with a moral problem, I ask myself: "What would The Lone Ranger do."

Well in 'The Train Job' Jayne shot one of Niska's thugs without being told to. Albeit he was drugged. As for River well that's a tough one. Of course she's done crazy things (getting scared about Book's hair, slashing Jayne) but whether or not any of the things she's said has been wrong I don't think there have been any. (Well I don't think Jayne looks that great in red but that's just me.)

Yep, he sealed the vents and prepped a suit for him too so when the atmo ran out he'd have a little while longer.

I say again, I believe Jayne to be reasonably intelligent, if somewhat unschooled. I was refering only to moral issues.
Now as to River, I thought it was established earlier/elsewhere on this board that she slashed not at Jayne but at the Blue Sun T-shirt he was wearing. Much in the same way that she tore the B.S. labels off the cans of food.
Her comment about "better in red" and her reaction [RE:freak-out] about Book's hair are just the things that may need closer attention.

When faced with a moral question I ask myself; "What would The Lone Ranger do?"

That is a theory but has never been proven. there is also the possibility that she foresaw Jayne's betrayal. there are many theories on why she slashed jayne. she may have just done it because he's and ass

MAL: This is my scrap of nowhere. You go on and find your own.
SAFFRON: You can't just leave me here, on this
lifeless piece of crap moon...
MAL: Sure I can.
SAFFRON: I'll die.
MAL: Well, as a courtesy, you might start
getting busy on that, cause all this chatter ain't doin' me any kindness.

Jayne... Jayne... Hmmm, let me see... Oh, hey, how about this: in Jaynestown, he was the only one who felt bad about using his fame to "hoodwink folks." That's gotta count for something.

But, really, I think Jayne's as moral as he has to be on a ship full of THIEVES.
