This questions for you guys and gals who have seen the dvd version

Just got the DVD and it's a beauty. I really like some of the commentary features on the dvd. There's a commentary for Serenity, Shindig, Out of Gas, the Train job, Objects in Space, War stories and the Message there's lots o cool info from the audio talk about the show such as props on the set, characters, humor, camera FX, and Chinese theme of firefly..dong ma?

So I have a question, what do you think is the best commentary ( gives the best description, funniest, or has most info.. ) and who do you think is the best talker Tim Minear, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite, David Solomon ? Shawna Trpcic, Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Joss Wendon ?

And which person were you disappointed not to hear from, or who would you have liked to listen to in the audio commentary but they just weren't there on the dvd ?

Joss' commentary is ALWAYS the best IMO,
and his for 'Objects in Space' is to me the most meaningful because it really explains what he is doing and intends to do wth the whole series...

in fact with all of his creative life.

Best commentary: Serenity
Runner up: War Stories
Most interesting: Objects in Space

The others were a lot of fun though.

Who did I wish? Well, I'm a bit disappointed that each of the cast didn't do at least one. I especially kind of wanted to see Sean Maher and Summer Glau (maybe doing Safe? Or Ariel?), oh, and Adam Baldwin of course (maybe for Jaynestown or for Ariel again).

And I really wanted commentaries for Ariel and Our Mrs. Reynolds

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I agree with embers about Joss' commentary on "Objects in Space," and for second place I would choose Tim Minear and David Solomon on "Out of Gas."

I wish that every cast member could have been represented, especially Adam Baldwin and Ron Glass, and even though I adore Jewel, they should have had Alan and Gina do a commentary together.

I definitely would have loved a commentary from Adam Baldwin on Jaynestown, or really any commentary on that ep! Serenity is my favorite though--Joss is so amazing when he has someone to talk to lol (not that he isn't always amazing, but who's seen my all time fave, the commentary on Wild at Heart with Joss, Marti Noxon, and Seth Green?)

Important people don't do field work.

I saw that commentary, and I thought Joss was kinda mean in that one. I'm not saying the man ain't a genius, but its people like us that caught the brunt of some of his harshest comments...Apparently, he's not a fan of internet fandom...

I can almost understand why some are none to kind to internet fandom

- Sometimes spoilers come out or unfouded rumors are spread on the net, other times scripts are leaked from upcoming movies or today people sometimes download the music or movie and put the shows, music or films at risk people of this non-legal activity

However I'm sure Joss would give it up for the fans of firefly and those who remain faithful to the cause, the internet fan group which has fueled the support for the show and the sites like this on the net which give the show and up coming film its full support. I think Joss would be very thankful to see how faithful the fans of firefly can be.

Still I think the audio Commentray with Joss on the dvds is great I hope he will also do more in the future, maybe after the firefly film comes out It would be great if others were in the dvd like Alan, Jewel, Gina or Nathan

It has to be Serenity. Joss and Nathan just crack me up through that one. I've been told that it's sad to watch commentaries on dvds but I'm trying to explain to my friends that watching the firefly commentaries is just like watching another episode or listening to stand up comedy it's so funny.

Joss: 'in the narrative I'm like explosions they're not human drama but when you're near one it's ...they're so pretty'

Hrm, can you clarify? I've listened to that commentary and I don't really remember any harshness toward fans. He makes fun of Charmed, Marti, Seth, himself, etc, but that's standard fare. Near the end he does talk about how the commentary is turning into fan gushing, but that's hardly harsh or even necessarily an insult. I haven't listened to it in a while though so I could be forgetting something.

Serenity is the best, mainly because it's rewatchable. Duos are usually better than solo commentaries and Nathan and Joss have a real rapor on tape. Out Of Gas and Objects In Space have some nice detail too though. The Message and Shindig ones are a little throwaway though.

"but who's seen my all time fave, the commentary on Wild at Heart with Joss, Marti Noxon, and Seth Green?)"

For some inexplicable reason, this commentary is absent from the UK release :(

Hi.

I saw this thread earlier in the day and doing some unconnected research I happened across these quotes and it reminded me of this post. I saw this and thought of you, as the saying goes:

AOL Host: How important has the medium of the internet been to spreading the word about your shows?
Joss Whedon: I think it has been essential. The way "Buffy" and the internet have interacted has been unprecedented. I knew I had fans before I got a chance to see and understand what ratings were because I would go on sites and meet people. You know, the community that started out from, you know, the very beginning has just grown and grown. It is a mob scene now.

. "So knowing that I have an ARMY behind me, knowing how much you guys care and are willing to do... well it helps. A great deal. "

I hope this reassures you that Joss appreciates the fans but I haven't heard the commentary so I don't know. I know he does get frustrated at spoilers leaking out though.

I wish Adam had a commentary. Or at least the whole cast doing one commentary like they did with the LOTR saga :/

As far commentaries, I really liked War Stories. I Might Be Wrong since it's been a while since I've seen them.

I wish that every writer & cast member could have done every episode they wanted to comment on, especially if this meant more than one commentary track per ep. On the other hand, Morena didn't seem to have much to say. On the gripping hand, this may have been because she found few opportunities to get a word in edgewise. Group commentary can degenerate into an irritation, if one of the group tends to tread on the others.

They should have had Alan do one on his own. Maybe he'd have been serious; at least he wouldn't be interrupting someone else's commentary. Put his one-liners on the gag reel.

I agree! It would be great to have multiple commentaries on the Serenity DVD just like LOTR. We could make the suggestion, and then push them for it because we really, really missed not having everyone comment on the episodes.

Favorite: War Stories, hands down.

Nathan: This next part is brought to you by black, the color of night.

Nathan: I really enjoyed this show — why’d it get cancelled?
Alan: I…I don’t know, I’ve got my theories.

(Inara having sex on screen)
(Nathan asks a question)
Joss: I'm Busy...

Or

Joss (as Summer): Does this cryogenic chamber make me look fat?

*waves hello* This is my very first post here at the boards - I don't know what took me so long to find this place but I'm glad I did.

I just had to weigh in on this subject for a number of reasons...but mostly just because I am a commentary junkie. My friends fall into that category that was mentioned earlier - that is, they think listening to commentaries is sad. And sometimes, they are right. Commentaries can sometimes be painful to listen to or just plain boring - so like I do with all shows/movies, I went into the Firefly ones with a little trepidation...but boy, was it unecessary! These were almost as entertaining as the show itself (which is saying a lot) and go a long way to showing how much of a rapor has developed between the cast and crew - which just makes me break into a big grin.

Favorite Commentary? Serenity...hands down. With War Stories coming a close second. Although, Objects in Space is quite amazing - it almost falls into a category of its own.

Favorite Commentator? Ooohh..I think I'd have to go with Joss (Objects in Space is amazing) but I have to say that Nathan was hilarious in both of his.

Favorite moments:
When Joss and Nathan are talking about Nathan's contacts being a problem, and then Joss realizing that it wasn't a reflection on camera but rather it was just Nathan trying to emote...and Nathan saying, "yeah, that was me acting!" he bit about the cryogenic chamber and Summer asking if she looked fat was priceless. Oh, and where Joss points out to Nathan (and to the audience) that when Alan is flying, there is no steering wheel. I had watched that episode so many times and never noticed that before... but then again, neither did they.

And the moments in War Stories where Alan is trying to convince Nathan that he is, in fact, taller than Gina. I still don't see it...

And like some others have said, I'd love to hear from the rest of the cast too - in particular, Adam.

BB

I always like Joss the best because he combines, humor, personal insight and a few good bits of technical knowledge. I actually take notes when Joss speaks. Second only Tim Minear.

(Both of Nathan's commentaries cracked me up a lot.)

It demonstrated how much of an experience the cast and Joss really had while working on the show.

My fav would be in serenity, With the Chicken....They do love those chickens in this show don't they, and the Anti-wash Piloting...

OH, and was i the only one that picked up the glitch in "The Train Job"? When One of the Guys said "That The Car they are getting off is Real, the rest is CG..." If you look closly, you will see a glitch at where the cg train starts...It's just odd.

Just wondering .. In the War Stories commentary, they are talking about River and Simon (Alan: he's really, really close to his sister...)and one of them mentions that they discuss this more on the commentary for Safe.

So where is this missing commentary for this ep???

War Stories was just so much fun. I love the way they were such fans of their own show.

Nathan was my favourite commentator of the lot. He was having so much fun and loved the show and it showed. His commentaries make me wish I had been there on the set to join the fun.

I really wish we could have heard from Adam Baldwin. Every time I watch him sing his song, I long to hear his commentary on Jaynestown.

i love them all. they're all really great. my favorites have to be Joss and Nathan on Serenity and Alan and Jewel on The Message

but, i do wish that everyone had an oppurtunity to speak on at least one episode, but hopefully with the BDM DVD, there's one commentary with all the actors with Joss. That would be awesome.

My fave is the Alan Tudyk and Jewel Staite one coz they are laughing the whole time hehe.

Usualy commentaries with writers, directors etc. are a bit boring coz they talk about complications in writing and set decoration and stuff. I'm all for the humour.
