It seems like I notice something new every time I watch a Firefly episode. Some I feel pretty dense for not noticing the first time around. Others are just cool little details.

This last time, watching "Serenity," I noticed the name painted on the side of the ship -- finally! Just never caught it before.

So, what little things have you noticed after multiple viewings?

I finally noticed the hologram-brain in "Ariel" starting to spaz just before River screams.....incidentally, just when Jayne begins talking about the change in plans.

-In Ariel, the bit that Wash throws at the dilapitated Ambulance is a catalyser - yup, the engine piece that caused so much trouble in OoG.

-The look on Wash's face on HoG, when Kaylee knocks him to the deck to get him out of the range of fire of burgess' men. Hi-larious.

-Also from HoG - Book: "Been following the footsteps of a carpenter for some time now." It took me a while to get this: Jesus was trained in Joseph's trade. Carpentry.

1. the blue sun logo on the crybaby transmitter in "serenity"

2. the catalyser in "ariel" as someone else mentioned.

here is another question, what are things you keep looking for but cannot find:

1. dobson's body on the ground when serenity takes off from whitefall to escape the reavers. maybe it is just too small.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I tend to notice small things like:

- the cable moving along the floor behind our BDHs in OoG when Mal is showing Zoe the ship for the 1st time.

- the guy in the hat & Hawaiian shirt who walks into the shot in Shindig.

- one of the candles on Simon's birthday cake being out one second, and lit the next in OoG.

Just to name a few....

In OMR, when Mal and YoSafBrig are sitting and talking in the engine room (about ten minutes into the episode), there is a three second shot where she is completely in shadow and can't be seen, but is well-lit before and after. Just noticed that last Friday.

I just rewatched every single episode this weekend while house sitting at a friends... who has a big screen TV! Yay!

It has been a while so it was almost like watching them for the first time.

What I noticed this time around...
The cars driving back and forth in the distance behind Zoe and Jayne in 'War Stories'.
And
I still have a hard time concentrating for a bit after the scene where Simone is talking to Early without his shirt on in 'Objects in Space'.

I also noticed that Jayne is almost always wearing something that has a stain on it somewhere!LOL.

OK, here's something I noticed just last night. In "Serenity", the control yoke for Inara's shuttle (that she leaves upside-down when taking off) is black, but in "Jaynestown" the yoke in her shuttle is white. Nit-picky, but true!

I'm remembering here, so I could screw this up - just a disclaimer:

In the commentary for "Shindig," they mention that Zoe's necklace (the leather cord-thingy) is essentially her wedding ring - she never takes it off, etc.
Two problems - She does take it off (Also "Shindig" - the sex scene) and she's already wearing it in OoG. So yeah, noticed that.

You're remembering correctly. That commentary is the only one I won't listen to again, because the obvious mistake with the necklace just irritates me no end.

On top of which, Buffy (and, I think Willow) wears something similar in one or two episodes. Can't recall which, not gonna do the research.

Most of the other "blooper"-type stuff is noticed by cast/production team/other commentators, so it doesn't bother me so much. Maybe the necklace thing, being a costume detail, bothers me because I have a background in costume, and making such a mistake in the commentary just reminds me I could've done that job. I mean, not that I applied, interviewed, and was turned down, or anything, just that, as a costumer, I would've been a little more careful with that kind of detail. And, let me say, the majority of the costuming was fantastic, so it's not like I think the costumer did a bad job, overall.

Well, did they say it was LIKE her wedding ring, or it WAS her "wedding ring"?

Because there IS a difference.

If it's just LIKE...you could say it's like her wedding ring simply because she never takes it off. Most people don't take off their wedding ring (or at least aren't supposed to).

I don't know, I haven't listened to the commentary, so I have no clue as to the context of the statement.

Mal: You're on my crew.

I re-watched up to and including OOG this past weekend and it just occurred to me that as soon as Mal got the catalyzer from the other evil-but-still-kinda-hot captain, he should have gone and hit the red button right away, instead of waiting until he installed the part.

I mean, he could have hit the button and then passed out and when everybody got back, Kaylee could have installed the part lickety-split and Simon could have patched up Mal and then Mal would not have had to stick that needle in his own heart and stuff! Or am I just being too logical and ruining an excellent ep?

I guess what I meant to say is, he COULD have hit the button first and then did the needle thing. OR did the needle thing first and then the button and then the installing the catalyzer part. Or whatever. In anycase, the others would at least have been headed back sooner, because he had the necessary part in his (admittedly bloody) hands. See?

Mal couldn't hit the red button first, cuz then there wouldn't have been much dramatic setup involving the crew returning on their own. Would there? So there, hah.

All good catches, though in reference to the person who noticed the Blue Sun logo on the crybaby in "Serenity" -- I think it's just irony that they used a Blue Sun product (soda? paint?) to make their little device. It also sets up that there's something called Blue Sun, which I never even noticed until I bought the DVD's and listented to the commentaries (I'm dumb). Yes, even though River slashes the logo on Jayne's shirt. I thought she was just being River.

In "Our Mrs. Reynolds," just before Saffron kicks Wash, he starts to say (regarding Zoe), "In fact, the first time we met, she actually tried to f(thud)."

I always wondered what she tried to do, but watching it the other day, I realized he also gets the "r" out and part of the vowel; the word is "frisk." High comedy.

I've got a few corrections to make to http://www.browncoats.com/main.php?parent=405a8603e9a13&line=3e546f888
09e9
(sorry if anyone else has said anything)

"When we first encounter the Reaver ship, it and Serenity fly extrememly slowly past each other, which makes for good dramatic effect, but doesn't make much sense (as Joss admits in the commentary)"

Plenty of ways to explain this. It's a freakish coincidence, by any explanation, but not neccessarily a blooper ;) The reavers could be just beginning to speed up after leaving a planets orbit (the planet would have to be moving in serenity's general direction), and they just happened to match Serenity's speed at the time. Spatial physics, people!

"The lady in a burkha on the train is shown carrying a baby in the background when everyone has to get off the train. Watch her, a jeep passes by her quite slowly and she doesn't notice and walks right into it, baby's head first!"

I never laughed so hard in my life!

"When Zoe says "Ship powered down on its own" there's no staticy clicking sound of the suit communicators turning on and off before and after she speaks, although the sound is present in all of her other lines while suited."

If you listen throughout the whole sequence, the clicks are sporatic anyways. Sometimes they're very soft, sometimes very loud.

"After Mal punches Saffron, CGI snowflakes fall behind his head -- indoors!"

Definately not CGI. I'm thinking more along the lines of a lot of dust caught in a beam of light. Haven't any of you ever seen this in your own house?

"When River shoots the three guards dead, the shot of the docking bay (when Kaylee looks out) is reversed. The office with the window is on the left instead of the right."

Check again ;) The 'office' was always on the left.

"When the ship is backing up into the ice cave the engines are pointed in the wrong direction for it to actually go backwards!"

Again, not understand physics here! Wash would've already turned the engines in the opposite direction of the ice cave to give the ship momentum to get into it. The shot we see would be wash turning the engines towards the cave to slow the ship down, and not smack into the back of the cave.

"When Chari lets Rance in the back door, there is a HUGE TRUCK or TRAILER thing behind him (you have to slow down the playback to see a good look at it)."

Yep, but it's also there when Book sprays the folks off the horses with the water hose. Looks to me like it's supposed to be there. By the way, it's labelled "Andersons" on the side.

Finally, I have one of my own to add:
In The Message, when Wash puts Serenity into a nose dive to avoid the falling rocks, watch the scene where Zoe and Book are thrown forwards. They're both laughing ;)

"I do the job... and then I get paid. Go run your little world."

BOBSUNCORP

I like to think that for all of the lines where River just mumbled Summer Glau came up with things that River might have said if she were able, these are things that I have noticed from re-watches based on what she mumbles:

In Shindig when Book, Simon and Jayne are playing "Tall Card" for the household chores River starts destroying some of the labels and boxes some of there food is in, mumbling all the while. I checked the subtitles which showed practically nothing revealing ("River mumbles incoherently") but by cranking the volume up I noticed she said "they're the one's, they're the one's who are doing it, who get to..." mumble mumble. And also the only stuff she destroys are Blue Sun products. Hmmm.

In Bushwhacked (I think, I'm terrible with the names - the one with the Reaver survivor) River wakes up screaming at the same time that this survivor wakes up in the sickbay, and it is obvious that she shares some psychic connection with him. I like to think that she has - while he was sleeping - been able to read the part of him which still knows who he is and has then felt that slip away into the nightmare of what he has become when he wakes up. What she says when she wakes up is "Jason!... No..". Ok not exactly conclusive by any measure, but It keeps me happy.

"So...You're a bounty hunter"
"No, thats not it at all"
"So what are you?"
"I'm a bounty hunter".

I like to see what they use as backgrounds in the sets, especially the outdoor type shots. In Shindig when they are outside the dressshop they are standing infront of a green and white thing with windows and an orange light. On "Serenity," after River is pulled out of the cooler, for the rest of the episode she is wearing Inara's robe.

At the beginning of "The Train Job," the belly dancer shimmies on over to Mal and the others, and hands Mal some bit of paper. It is this same bit of paper that Mal holds up later on the bridge as he says, "We have ourselves a job." The belly-dancer was the contact.

Also on the "Train Job," as River wanders around the infirmary, a light hits her face and she shudders. Photophobia.

Also, regarding "Bushwacked," just an overall thing, this episode is designed like "Train Job," to be the first episode you might watch. Like at the beginning, when Simon goes over his and River’s whole back-story with Inara (which she already knows), or the interrogation scenes with Harkin.

In Safe, River is dancing happily but stops, with a horrified look on her face. The way the ep is edited (& this may be no more than artistic license, but I think it's even cooler if taken literally), she doesn't stop when Book is shot; she stops when Mal notices Book has been shot.

I suppose she may have stopped 'cause she saw Simon was about to be snatched but, she seems to react calmly to imminent (also, point of interest, immanent) disaster, in Outa Gas.

They started showing The Shield here a few weeks ago and a few days ago I was watching 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' with a friend, and I noticed one of the "wreckers" was played by Benito Martinez who plays Captain Aceveda on The Shield. Weird seeing someone who's these days an established actor on a popular show in a guest role with about ten seconds of screen time.

Also I guess I'll mention what I've already said on the episode page about Out of Gas: In Serenity Kaylee asks Mal to get a compression coil. In OoG when Mal tells the other ship's captain what's broken, he asks "Sure it's not the compression coil?"

It is indeed Early. If you listen to the commentary for OIS, Joss states clearly that it is Early's voice we hear. You'll also notice that River sleeps through the other voices but snaps awake at Early's voice.

It's a coffee can, according to the commentary.

If you pay even closer attention to the crybaby you'll see that it's "Crybaby #6", indicating that they've pulled this gag 5 other times. The #6 is visible during the second shot of the crybaby rotating in space.

The thing that bugs me about the crybaby is that they don't use one in bushwacked. Seems like a pretty similar situation. Would have been helpful for getting away from the alliance too.

I noticed that too - I figure either
a) they'd run out of them or
b) Joss didn't want to get leaning on it as a plot device

or a) because of b).

Just watched Safe last night and I did notice something that I never noticed before. When Mal talks to Simon about taking River to town while he takes care of the deal with the cattle, there is a split second scene of a rustle in some bushes. I think this is supposed to show that the kidnapping hill folk were there listening in. I always did wonder how they knew Simon was a doctor. Now I know.

Such a great show. I like how they don't have to bang the audience over the head with every little detail. It's assumed that the audience is intelligent and will pay attention enough to pick up on things.
