Nathan Fillion was featured as one of the top 10 overlooked performances of 2005 in an Associated Press Article.
Taken from article:"Nathan Fillion, 'Serenity'. Like Harrison Ford did three decades ago, Fillion plays a bemused, roll-with-the-punches spaceship captain. There aren't awards for such performances, but they help remind us that sci-fi and action movies can actually be good." Asscoiated Press article, 12/25/05
How's that for a Christmas present!! Serenity gets recongized as a kick ass movie and Nathan gets his props!! Go Captain Tightpants!!

This performance was much different from the show...Much harder edge...without the loss of the essence of the character

I think Nathan is destined for greatness. He seems to have a wonderful sense of humor, and he really enjoys his job. That, and the fact that he has actual talent, and is as handsome as all get out will take him far.

As for Summer, I can't say enough good stuff about how she portray's River. I have some real life experience with people who have mental illness and developmental issues. The treatments River got were supposed to have made her a lot like a schitzophrenic. She has it nailed. Remember the scene from the series when she talks about the apple bits? It tore me up.

The whole cast is great, but Nathan and Summer really stand out in my mind.

I have to agree with Nathan's performance being overlooked and I think his performance in the movie and the series were top shelf. He's obviously a dedicated consumate actor and really mastered the character of Mal. Off screen he appears to be a warm, jovial always making people laugh human being that after meeting you'd think "I'd like to invite this guy over for some beers" or if you're a girl you'd probably think, "This guy is sweet, wonder if he's married or would ask me out on a date" yet he manages to wrap himself up in the constrained, conflicted hollowed out character of Mal when on screen and nails it everytime. I know this guy is going places and I think we've only seen the surface of his talent because he seems to have that professional zeal that drives people to excellence. I couldn't for the life of me imagine anyone else taking over the role of Mal in any future Firefly 'verse sequels or mini-series. For me it's Nathan or nutthin, plain and simple. "Oh, Captain! My Captain......." and all that. To show how devoted he is to his fan base he's even posted a Christmas greetings on the Browncoats homepage. Seems he and Mark Sheppard are very appreciative of the fans although I've heard praise of all the others too just haven't seen online postings which is ok since it's a very busy fast paced life in the world of Hollywood. Also, Summer Glau's performances in Firefly and especially Serenity are just plain fantastic. That girl has pure, raw talent as well as beauty and grace. From what I've read of the fan convention feedback she's very warm and down to earth in real life. Hope she gets the recognition she deserves. Hell, I hope all our Big Damn Heroes get the recognition they deserve.
Hope all of you reading this are having a very Merry Christmas or "Happy Holidays" as some whiners would say.

Here's what our fantastic Captian sento to all of us:

So, here we are. So much has happened recently and I feel this is the time to pause and reflect before the New Year starts slapping us around.
We made the movie, it has come out on DVD just in time for that odd little Christian holiday where they celebrate not being fed to lions or something. It is number one on Amazon, and the old Firefly set is crawling back up the charts like a thirsty man in the desert towards a mirage. Does this make us better than anyone else? You bet it does. But it's not the kind of better than that causes you to look down your nose at anyone. It's more the kind that lets you pat someone patiently on the arm and say in a sanctimonious tone, "Mm hm, it's alright. I'll get you a copy of the movie and you can be cool, too. Just not quite as cool as me because I've been a Browncoat for sometime, now."
If you are like me, you watch the movie to assure yourself the future will be safe, you watch the extras to see old friends, and you listen to Joss' commentary and shed a little tear over good times. Waht's that? You don't cry in the commentary? Well, just have an emotion chip installed, you robot, and refill your eye bags with saline.
Be well, Browncoats. Aim high, as we have all learned that nothing is impossible (except getting Jewel and Morena to stop fighting over who is prettier when we all know it's me). Happy Holidays.

Nathan "Captain Tightpants" Fillion

I hope you enjoy.
I agree with JayTee. What an awesome post! I couldn't have put it better myself.

Congrats, Nathan. I'm sure Nathan will get his due in time. He is still young yet. I don't think Harrison Ford ever won an Academy. At least not yet. But we all know Ford is one of the great actors of his time and I'm pretty sure the same will be said with Nathan.

It is funny though. Both of them started out taking small roles for the most part and no one ever saw them going anywhere until they both played hard hitting Captains on spaceships. The only difference is that Nathan actually started in TV. But one other freakish similarity is that they both played very minor roles in war movies before their career took off. Ford played a General's aide in Apocalypse Now by Coppola and Nathan played the wrong private Ryan in Saving Private Ryan by Spielberg.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Post subject: Captain Outraged! Edmonton, fall in!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is times like these that I feel like Malcolm Reynolds. This is something that would surely get you kicked into an engine. I just went to a comic store to purchase the Serenity comic for my mom. The sweetheart that she is, gave her issues (with her favorite character on the front) to relatives who were having trouble tracking one down. Please bear in mind that Canada is a wondrous place where the service industry is polite and helpful, and that this experience is not the norm. The store I chose, which shall remain nameless (Warp 1 Comics), at an undisclosed location (just off Whyte Ave), has the singlemost sanctimonious, condescending, dishonest a$$hole I've had the misfortune of meeting. My brother and I called ahead to find out they had one issue left, but upon arriving, found out they are gouging people $20 bucks for the damned thing! "That's what they're worth." he sneered at me. I asked him to show me a listing of some sort to back it up. "Well, I just know what I paid Dark Horse for it." He wouldn't show me that, either. I am aware that Dark Horse wasn't expecting these books to sell as well as they are, and that they are going into a second printing, but I just picked up three of them two days ago at cover price at another store. My brother piped up with a, "What an interesting attitude you have." Let me tell you folks, this fella had an attitude, and a smirk that you wanted to knock off his face with a baseball bat dipped in dog poop. Of course, my brother couldn't help letting this guy know who he was trying to hose by holding the issue next to my face. "This guy look familliar? This isn't some JoJo off the street! He knows what he's talking about!" Check this out- the reply of this crap-catcher, who shall remain nameless (Darryl) was, (and imagine a dullards voice- how we make people we don't like sound in a story) "Well, then you can call Joss Whedon and ask him." I had to tell this purplebelly that I was being sarcastic when I thanked him for his excellent service, and I don't think he knew what sanctimonious meant!
Wouldn't a smart business man ask me to sign an issue and sell me one at a fair price? Wouldn't that fetch a prettier penny than ripping me off for one issue? Congratulations, dude! You are now on the Browncoat $hitlist.
Never have I tried to wield power in this way, but if being Malcolm Reynolds has taught me anything, it's to follow my over-developed sense of vengeance. BOYCOTT WARP ONE COMICS! If you are in the neighborhood, drop by to tell "the Buttress" that Browncoats don't take $hit from anyone. Tell your friends not to shop there, and lock 'em in the airlock if they do. Copy this post and e-mail it to fellow Edmontonians. Bump it to keep it alive.
Thank you. Thank you for letting me rant. If you feel I'm overboard, please feel free to, as Joss would say, contemplate silently.

The Captain

Edited to be less cruel, and to mention how wonderfully my dear mom was treated at HAPPY HARBOR. Thank you, staff and owners at Happy Harbor. You made my mom's day. Turns out, Warp One tried to hose her, too, by telling her that the Jayne covered issue was a rarity. Love you, Adam B. You ARE a rarity. Nothin' agin you. But will these butt-tards stoop so low as to steal from a woman? For shame, Warp One, for shame.

This guy is the real deal, passionate and compassionate all wrapped up together with a fine sense of what's just and unjust. He comes off in every post as being sincerly flattered by all the attention and not at all a concieted dickehead like so many actors tend to be nowadays (Tom Cruise, I know you're not reading this so you won't be offended)

WASH was a better sidekick than Chewbacca; in fact, low budget M4TV FIREFLY compares very favorably at all levels with the original STAR WARS film. Compare'em back to back... you'll be shocked. What many reviewers ignore is the ensemble acting. With the possible exception of Ford & Guiness, the acting is far superior. The chemistry is pure magic. Joss' story-telling is multi-layered, which is what makes them worth watching over & over- how many shows can make that claim?

Mal the Captain is great, but he shines with a complex crew the likes of Jayne, Wash, Kaylee, etc.

Oh god! I love that post he wrote about the purplebelly Darryl. Thanks for sharing that jaytee. I've recently signed up to the browncoat site and I hadn't seen that yet.

This is why I love this guy. This is why we all love this guy. He's funny, he's real, he reminds us all of that one guy in our group of friends that has us rolling on the floor all the time. Even though his star is on the rise, he's still a regular dude, and he'd be more than happy to take any one of out for a beer and just hang.

This is so true. As a relative newcomer to the series and movie, the thing that struck me the most about the show/movie was the talent of the ensemble cast. Sure, a lot of it is the writing of the character, but the actor brings as much (if not more) to making fictional characters "real".

The cast of "Firefly" has gone beyond the norm, and made us all love these characters. That the shows are (for the most part) well written, certainly helps, but no matter how well written a show may be, without characters you actually "care" about, you'll never reach the level of fanaticism this show seems to have attained.

Yes, I think Nathan and Summer are superb, and easily my two favorites, with Adam a close second, and Wash an even closer third. But, even the characters who didn't get as many juicy parts, also excelled.

You can tell when someone loves their job, and easily the people who worked on "Firefly" loved theirs. It's so obvious. And that's why we, the viewers, love it, too.

It's contageous.

And yes, there are still things I don't like about the show, but I want to stick to the subject of this thread, and compliment the outstanding work by the actors.

'Tis I who asked for the link and thanks for that. To hear from the man himself was excellent. I had a crush on Mal, no question, but I wondered if that transfered to Nathan as well. If it did not before it does now. Reading his post about the jerk of a comic book guy (WORST COMIC BOOK STORE EVER!!)has not helped bring my crush back to reality, i'll say that. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to watch the BDM again. Or, at least chapter 8. about 45 min. into the movie, where Mal is woken by Inara's wave. Yum
I also want to say how excellent it is to belong to something where the people are so cool and smart and kind. Another list I'm on for a musician, all they ever do is argue about who got there first. Browncoats are excellent people. Fans, creators and actors alike. Sham on, all!

This lovely little jewel of a movie is full of great performances... Nathan for certain. Nuanced and the ability to do funny and serious. Only the best can pull this off.

But Summer.. what a performance! Do you all remember Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind? It won best pic and he got a nomination but did not win. RC is a great actor. But Summer on Firefly and especially in Serenity.. going fromm vulnerable teenager to kick ass killer machine.. the scene with Sean when she comes unglued.. it is a tour de force. If Hollywood gave sci fi a real look, they would see what an amazing work this is. The writing, the directing, the tech work and the acting.. they may not see it.. we do.

Here is MY Oscar nod for this film!

Mal and Inara get it on?
Ai ya! No way. Never. Ever.

Because the next thing would have to be:
And they all lived happily after.
............THE END..............
Which isn't what we want

OR

Someone would have to die...
Which certainly isn't what we want!

To plot it otherwise it would be to create a total shark-jump.

The tension (theirs and ours) is far, far too important to be broken. Only crank it up and down in little increments.

I thought Nathan was great in the series, but in Serenity, he shows what a brilliant actor he truly is. Just look at his mouth twich a smile as he talks to Sean during the credits, or how he reacts when he's told to "tell that to Inara". Maybe it was the time to nail each take for a theatrical production, or maybe he's simply grown as an actor, but WOW, does he have a future in the Biz if Hollywood sees him for what he is!

I want to see Harrison Ford play his father in movie someday, that would be even cooler than Sean Connery playing Harrison's dad!!!!

You, know, I think you've got something there, Chrisisall. That would be fine to see.

I knew when I saw "Out of Gas" that I was seeing someone with a future... someone to reckon with.
Nathan is awesome in the movie.. when he stands tortured with the weight of his decisions in the door of Inara's shuttle... it took my breath away.

When he tells Inara, if he goes to war, she'll see somethin' new...the menace and power were palpable.

I hope the powers that be give him his opportunity.. he will be the next big actor, if they will allow him the chance.

IHEARTFIREFLY

Heck yes, I've seen Slither! twice, actually. I saw it at Fangoria in Rosemont, IL for free with most of the cast of the movie- minus Nathan. :(

I got to meet him, though. I told him I had just discovered Firefly and it had ruined tv for me. He told me that did tend to happen, then he cleaned my box set cover with his shirt (He told me all about how smugable those cases are) and signed it, "Natalie, Stay Shiny! -Nathan Fillion" Then he pulled me over the signing table and we made out for an hour.

Okay, that last part probably didn't happen, but my story was sounding so boring. Not quite original, I know, but it surely made my day/month/general existence. -Oh, and he did very comfortably press his cheeck to mine for the picture. It actually startled me how comfortable he was with touching and hugging his fans. Very sweet-like, though. Not the creepy I'm-a-star-and-these-girls-adore-me-so-I'll-touch-them-as-much-as-possible kind of way. (Michael Rooker was really sweet but he sort of had that vibe goin' on after the Slither premier. :)

So, in conclusion, what did you ask me? Oh, yes, Slither. I saw it and thought it was great- very watchable, very entertaining. It's one that I would watch several times just because it makes me smile.

And Thank you for the links!! I'm gonna check 'em out now. :)
