Haken & or moderators,

I am not trying to be pain or anything, but why are there are ongoing discussions about religion & giants in the General Discussion area?

The threads "What are your thoughts on God Part 3" & "Nephilim Who or What are They?" have no place in General Discussion. I have tried to calmly point out in "Nephilim" to the new poster "Windtalker" that such discussions are fine here, but that they belong in Real World or Talk Story, not General. I was basically told to bugger off.

I have been here a while & normally don't rock the boat. I call FFF.net home & spend a good bit of time here every day. With all the new fans coming along & our continuing efforts to grow the fan base & secure a sequel we need to keep General for Firefly, Serenity & related topics, not religious discussions. Such topics might scare off less tolerant newbies & it definitely bumps relevant posts of the page by cluttering up the thread.

Just thought I would bring it to your attention.

I'm not a moderator, and I'm obviously not Haken either...but I might have an answer as to why they're discussing all of that in General Discussion. I have a feeling that it's because that's where everyone is most of the time. People check the other discussion threads, as in this one FFF.net Central, or Real World, but not as often as they do in General Discussion. And although the caption under General Discussion says "General discussions and comments relating to Firefly," I think that most of the discussions that go on in that territory are just that...general discussions...about anything. There have been plenty of threads that don't relate to Firefly or Serenity that have been on that board...it's just folk talking, wanting to reach out to each other, and having thought provoking conversations.

Personally I don't have a problem with them discussing their thoughts on God either. I have read through some of it and I haven't found anything offensive in there. For the most part everyone seems to be conducting themselves in an orderly fashion, no name callings and such that I've seen so far. Sure I have my own feelings on that subject, but I'm not about to post them. My thoughts and feelings on the matter I feel are private. As of lately I haven't been reading up on it, because I don't want to be a part of that conversation...but I don't have a problem with folk talking about it.

My advise: Let them discuss what they want. We're all friends and family here. As long as everyone plays nice and no one is ostracized for their beliefs, no one offends anyone else, then let them continue their discussions.

No I'm not telling you to bugger off. I would never tell that to a fellow browncoat. Just lighten up a little is all.

When there are so many of these off topic posts and threads on the Gen. Disc. board, they bump relevant discussion off the page. This creates multiple problems:

Tired enough, in fact, that I don't come here nearly as often as I used to - instead spending time in places where I can more eaily find what interests me.

So yeah, Moderators, as someone who has been here for years, I second Browncoat1's request that these threads get moved to their proper places so that I can continue to discuss, of all things, Firefly.

I understand why they do it. I just think that it causes problems and should be addressed. Ironically, it even worsens the problem that causes people to do it.

Ummm...yeah. That's my complaint. The 'giant', the 'religion part x', and most of all (for me, at least) the endless cliques and conversations about absolutely nothing - they all have pre-existing places to be that would not inhibit themselves or the "discussions and comments relating to Firefly."

I suppose it could depend on how you parse that sentence:

"General discussions and comments relating to Firefly"
vs.
"General discussions and comments relating to Firefly."

But I think it is pretty clear that the latter choice is correct within the context of the other forums: "Talk Story: Discuss whatever you want here." (which provides a place for general discussions) and "Firefly Episode Discussions: Discuss and comment on current and past episodes of Firefly." (which serves to distinguish discussions of particular episodes from discussions of Firefly in 'general'.)

Could be that they just didn't realize it. I was here over a year before I realized there were separate forums, and even now I rarely look at threads that way (I usually just scan through the top 100 unless I'm looking for a particular thread).

Although that doesn't account for why they won't listen once it's been explained to them. Browncoats shouldn't be telling other Browncoats to bugger off. It's just not shiny

I'll second this notion. I hit the General threads first because i know it's where most of the latest Firefly/Serenity discussions are, but it’s also where most of the BS is. I really really hate having to sort thru threads like “what’s your porn name” to get to the threads that bring me to this site to begin with. Like I give a ruttin hump what your porn name is, who watches “24”, or your thoughts on god. I’ve been a role-player for 26 years, but I *don’t* want to have to sort thru no less than a dozen calls for RPG groups & such to get the latest ‘verse news. There is an entire section for that.

Everyone here seems pretty nice & I really hate to bitch, but come on. Keep on topic. Post in the proper message areas. Think about the other hundreds of people visiting this site daily. It’s just rude & inconsiderate to post this stuff where it doesn’t belong.

I don't have a problem w/ the subject matter at all, it is where they are discussing it that I do have an issue with for reasons I pointed out above.

I was not aware that I was being uptight about it. If that is the impression I gave then I apologize.

My concern is that the General area is fast becoming cluttered w/ topics that have no business in the General Firefly/Serenity area. This clutter is becoming fast reminiscent of the Fox board & the 'Versal board. I avoided both of those for the most part that they became so inundated w/ off topic posts that it wasn't worth the effort of trying to sort through all the posts to try to find any worthwhile discussions.

If we allow off topic, religious & a myriad of other discussions in "General" why have separate forum areas at all?

I would suggest posting this complaint in the General Discussion Forum. (where the noobs, such as me - to this site not firefly -, may see it). Some of the topics are way off but I am not sure how prevent it. …and I am all ‘bout organization. I am a DBA.

I agree with Chrisisall… silly, drivel will inevitably show up in that forum.

It is like telling CNN to show only the Science/Space headlines front and center all the time. Where some are reminded of other forums being bogged down. I am reminded of human reaction to most cult-like followings. I see this alot with bands. Old fan to new fan, “Oh, but u weren’t here in ‘87”. Now, that is when it was good. They weren’t even on a major label”. I did not get that sentiment from this particualr post, But i have in the past. If it is not "worth it", your right there are other ways to easily get info on FF. I just think that fact that it has the word "discussion" in the name makes me want to write replies not just to news but other peoples opinons.

BC1… u posted in the “A Christians Perspective”…. The original poster was looking for a connection between Christianity and Firefly… Is this good for General Discussion? (I swear to you I am asking politely. I have enjoyed your posts in the past.) For this post does try to tie it in with Firefly, unlike “Porn names”

I come to this site because I feel at least the people here love firefly and that is enough to make me like ‘em. All non-troll topics are welcome.

Also, ChrisTheCynic started the “thoughts on GOD” threads and he is a heavy poster and is no noob. Bottomline Noobs probably don’t know the “rules” and vets want as many people to see it as possible.

Any solutions here? I assure u If I was told not post in a particular forum for certain subjects. I would have not told u told bugger off.

Nah, don't apologize mate. We're all family here and all and I see your point now as I read more about your thoughts on it. It is true that the boards can become cluttered, and I think it's happening a little more often than before because of the surplus of recruits that have come aboard. It's become a side effect of the show's popularity. Plenty of newbies don't know much about the other threads (and I myself am guilty of that as I've only been here for almost two months) and "General Discussions" on any forum board tend to have the rule that "anything goes" on that forum. In all honesty though I guess I don't mind it so much because to me it's a sign that we are gaining some kind of momentum and it doesn't bother me to sort through the clutter myself.

I guess another thing too is that this is something that does tend to happen to every forum board you'll come across. I've been a member of quite a few myself, and it always happens. Thing is, well, this place has been more of a home to me than any of the others have ever been. I LOVE it here because I love the people in it. I have disagreed with folk from time to time, but we all always end up working it out in the end. So I guess because of that I tend to ignore the clutter that is inevitably going to happen.

I apologize to you if I had offended you in my previous thread BC1. From the looks of it, it doesn't seem like I did, but I just want to make sure I didn't anger you in any way. Like I said, I really enjoy all the folk in here and I don't want to put anyone off.

I agree with every point you make. When I first joined this board (two years ago), I misunderstood General Discussions. I think it's because Haken made a poor choice of short title. I humbly suggest that it be renamed; 'FIREFLY in GENERAL' might work better, say with subtitle 'About the series as a whole. Formerly General Discussions'. It couldn't help but relieve some of the problem.
