According to Kelly over at the Official Firefly Website, Greg Edmonson will be responsible for composing music for Firefly. According to IMDB, Edmonson previously composed music for FOX's "King of the Hill" and ABC's "Cop Rock".

Kelly also revealed that Vondie Curtis will be directing the Joss Whedon written 5th episode of Firefly.

This is exciting. I know I'll take flak for this, but I'm just gonna say it: I love Cop Rock, and I am not afraid to admit it.

This news is good for me.

Well, all musicals require a certain suspension of disbelieve -- people hardly ever burst into song in real life. But a musical TV show -- especially a cop show -- is just too much suspension for most of us. Perhaps if they'd used some plot device to explain it. Music drugs in the water supply or something.

I enjoyed OMWF, but it had its awkward moments. Like when everybody's standing around the magic shop doing solos in turn. It just didn't look natural. If they started singing in every ep, it'd get old fast.

Some performances only work if they're done live. I've never enjoyed watching serious dance on TV, but live performances can be a lot of fun. Same with musical theater.

Speaking of COP ROCK, I just read on cinescape.com that Bochco is developing a cop show set in New York in 2069 (for FOX, fall 2003). The premise is that a cop from our present somehow gets sent into the future. Boch wants it to have a near-future feel, and to be not as dark or apocalyptic as DA or MAD MAX.

Oh gawd. He probably pitched it as a blend NYPD Blue with Star Trek, but it'll probably look like a blend of Hooperman and Futurama. I think I'm a little tired of Steve Bochco.

I've never seen any of the shows/movies for which Edmonson scored, but unless he composes with a pre-programmed Casio keyboard, he can't be worse than Thomas Wanker.

Faster Waltz! Faster!

Yeah, Thomas Wanker isn't great, is he? Chris Beck was far better, and Joss Whedon clearly isn't happy with Wanker either; most of the episodes he's done he's made some excuse for not using his music. In The Body, he didn't have music; in The Gift, he wanted Chris Beck to do it; in Once More..., he did it...

Joss had Christophe Beck score OMWF, IIRC. So, yeah, I think you're right there.
