For those of you who predicted that Episode III would tank after the first week:

Quote:

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Payback for the Sith has meant a real payday at the box office.

"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" beat two strong newcomers to remain the top movie with $70.75 million over the long Memorial Day weekend, though Hollywood again failed to climb out of a prolonged revenue decline.

Debuting in second place was the animated adventure "Madagascar" with $61 million, while Adam Sandler's football remake, "The Longest Yard," opened a close third with $60 million, according to studio estimates Monday.

I am attributing it to a very strong fan base and repeat screenings from said base.

Serenity should do really well, what with the fan base and all.

To sum up: Fan-Base.

As a die hard Star Wars AND Firefly fan I must say, that you must hug your local Star Wars fan, for we are huggably soft! Plus , most do have interests beyond just SW, so it's a fan base that the Browncoats can launch a frontal attack on and convert some heathens! =shoots her rifle=

=plays with her Darth Vader figure= Yes, you and me Darthy, we shall rule the galaxy as Master and Figure.

And hey ,yeah I'm planning on seeing Serenity more than once too! So Serenity can't get jealous!

#1 I never thought it would tank...I thought it would suck but make an obsene amount of money while doing it...

but really
#2 The first weekend (used lightly since they opened it on Thursday at midnight) they made $200,000,000.
and the second weekend they made $70,000,000.
which is not really what you want...you want as many or more people to go the second week.
statistics based on:
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/boxoffice/weekend/

And of course when Serenity comes out we'll be lucky to get half that,
but I hope it will build so that the second weekend is better than the first.
And the third weekend is the best yet....

Important people don't do field work.

How can they continue to say that box office revenues are in a slump based on what these movies made this weekend? 61mil for Madagascar, and 60 for The Longest Yard, on top of the 70+ for Star Wars...That does not sound like the continuation of a slump to me...

Thanks for that - was actually surfing around last night trying to find the total gross to date.

this is one of those things that annoy me...
movies like 'House of Wax' (with Paris Hilton)
and Orlando Bloom's 'Kingdom of Heaven' or Will Ferrill's 'Kicking and Screaming' don't make very much money their opening weekends (and far less after that)
so the producers & theater owners blame the public and say that there is a box office slump...

They never consider that the movies are awful

The producers of 'Enterprise' did the same thing, they have bad scripts and then blame the fans for not watching the show...and write it off as though the franchise needs a rest.
When in fact all of television AND the movies need to hire some talented writers!

(please excuse the rant...I had to get that off my chest)

Hell honey, rant away. I'm right there with you.

Hire talented writers, let them create, don't screw with what they do. Stop with the stupid lame bs and then, I'll go to a movie again.

I haven't been to the movies since Napoleon Dynamite. It was the last thing I was willing to pay $8 to see.

CORRECTION: I saw Serenity the other night and I'm willing to pay up to $20 to see it again in September.

Okay, here's my personal rant of the day:
Here's what is really sad, I'm working on "Meal Ticket" again and I keep envisioning my bad guy as Alan Baldwin AND Michael Shanks. I love me some Jayne and some evil Dr. Jackson.

I've got to pick one or the other in my head or the editor is going to have a stroke fixing my wandering description.

Think yourself lucky - OK, so this is in Central London so - you know - tourist prices! - but the cinema I saw Ep III in now charges £17.00 for its top price tickets. With the current exchange rate that's roughly $30.00.

What the? $30.00 for a movie? I paid $6.00 for a matinee of SW epIII and still felt like I'd paid too much for it. [do]They charge each viewer Shipping and Handling for the film? Yikes that's steep.

Well, when you think you could buy the DVD for less than that...

I've grown kind of immune to London prices but it comes as a bit of a shock to tourists!

At least the cinema in question is a nice one - it's where they hold the BAFTAs (our version of the Oscars) so at least you can console yourself by thinking of the famous people who may have shared your seat!

I'm right there with ya, and as such I have to say these last three SW flicks leave me cold. And that's a shame, 'cause when I watch eps 4, 5, and 6, it's like a religious experience for me.
"It's too late for me, son" sends shivers up my spine, even just typing it! Nothing in the last three comes close. Mark Hamill was the heart and soul of those movies, it's an endless debt we can never repay, IMHO.
(Nathan's got that magic, too)

All ready for Serenity(WHAT? IT'S STILL NOT OUT!?!) Chrisisall

America loves a winner!

Lucas still made a crappy movie. Were it not for the nostalgia of a generation ago wanting to see this moive, it would have been a flop.

Agreed. But let's still welcome enthuasiam for the originals that the new ones generate! Everywhere I look, they're selling lightsabres and such. That's a good thing, right?

Soon they'll be sellin' Serenitys! Chrisisall

I agree, the originals are like a religious experience for me too. Harrison Ford was the heart and soul of the originals for me though.

He was great in 4, unbelievable in 5, but sorta only good in 6, I thought. I felt he and Carrie just weren't so into it for the third time around, but Mark only kept getting better as he went along, IMHO.
But still, good Ford is better'n great most other actors.

Doesnt it make you feel old when you see actors today that you loved when you were young and now they are grey and old.. intellectually I know that I am aging too.. scares me. Is 36 old? I still feel like a teenager (I'd like to still feel a teenager too but alas she is also in her 30's now)

Sorta off topic I know.

36 is practically a teenager as far as I'm concerned. Is Nathan Fillion young? Then so are you.
Jackie Chan is 6 years my senior, yet he does things I'll never be able to do.
Jayne Seymour was my childhood crush, she STILL is lookin' good!
Like Kirk said, "I feel young!"
We start out like Luke, and end up like Obi-Wan, I'm cool with that.

Uh...where's my cane?

"Its too late for me son..."

Shivers...Do it again...

"Then my father is truly dead..." You know, Darth Vader got all the best lines in Episode 6, and for good reason. I remember being quite sad at the theater with his demise.

But, I have to say that Harrison looked like he phoned in his part on Return. He didn't want to be there, and you could tell. But, man, was he used to explosive effect in Empire.

But, one more thing about Darth Vader, and I'm out...When he ignited that Lightsaber after Luke turned himself in, I remember being genuinely afraid that he was going to use it, and that's saying quite a thing for a character who is 1)In a mask, 2)Requires dual acting for his character ...I mean, voice and body (Jeremy Prowse is an imposing figure) and 3)That he was just that bad...I knew Luke was his son, but I still thought he might just go ahead and off him...Then again, I was 8 when it came out.

For me, Darth is what its all about in Return. Han in Empire, and Luke in Hope.

Same here! I thought he might cut off another hand or something. I was shaking in the theatre at that point. Not since then has a character terrified me like that. (Niska taking Mal's ear came close, though)

You don't know the power of the Reaver side Chrisisall
