At least I was hopeful. Official sources have confirmed that Firefly--the critically acclaimed sci-fi series from Joss Whedon--will glow no more next year.

Regardless, it'll keep on flying in my heart for a very long time.

I'm extremely sorry to hear about the cancellation. I looked forward each Friday to a new episode of the show and had become invested in the characters.

Its not often that bright lights show themselves on the little blue screen and Firefly's light only glowed brighter over its short run.

I am a Firefly fan and ready to support Firefly as I can. But I'm also a FarScaper and therefore understand this pain all too well, being only a few months removed and still in the thick of the fight.

Don't give up, stranger things have happened. As the fight continues, however, have as much kindness and patience in your heart as you have passion for Firefly and you will survive in the end, better for the experience no matter what Fox does. It's hard to believe now, the emotions are so strong, but the impression you make at the start is a lasting one, so choose your words and actions carefully.

Again my condolences, I'll be watching the board for ways I can help.

What Akimbo said.

I loved Firefly and it was well on its way to becoming that mushy kind of love. I'm tired and frustrated this morning and this news just frelling blows.

I just wanted to let you know that savefarscape.com is ready and willing to support the Firefly fandom in anything it needs. Just say the word.

This is really annoying mostly due to the fact that Joss and his team delivered a well made show with so much potential and the people at FOX seem to go out of there way to drain the life out of the show. I don't believe any of the blame for the cancellation should be directed at Joss's team or the viewers, It is clearly the fault of the people at FOX for not showing any faith in Joss's ability to create such a wonderful show. Not showing the pilot, showing episode out of order, not showing episodes for a couple of weeks, not advertising the show and announcing that the show is going in to hiatus all lead to Firefly being cancelled. If anybody at UPN is listening please give Firefly the second chance it deserves and if the people at FOX want to do at least one thing right please release the episodes that have been made on DVD.

Yes, let's have that DVD and a Firefly marathon on some more DESERVING channel like SciFi, who caters to the freaks like us who, let's face it, are NOT the majority.
TV is a tough market...it rarely rewards the most creative and the brightest.
Farewell, Firefly... you may be gone but Joss' creative mind (and his minions) will rise again somewhere else. And I'm really, REALLY looking forward to that.

that sounds weird to me. all the world is bitching at SciFi for dropping Farscape and you seem to think it is 'deserving' Firefly. deserving it so it is dropped somewhere in the middle of the story like Farscape did?

I don't understand... Fox was going to look at December's numbers for Firefly, but there's been only one new episode with two more to go (including a Whedon helmed episode).

Fox obviously made the wrong decision.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The only other time I cried over TVdom was when Sherry Stringfield left ER. Something in FF connects with me. Eulogy does a great job of defining the heart of the show, but the characters, acting, and quirky humor are great too! FF was never given a chance, and FOX gave us a textbook example of how NOT to treat a show.

Nonetheless, all we can do is be like Mal: calculate our odds, make good decisions, and keep on keeping on. I'll be checking the FF support board to see what else can be done.

So sorry to hear this news. I've been going through the same thing with my favorite show, Farscape. Since Farscape's cancellation I have taken to watching Firefly and have very much enjoyed it.

These type of moves aren't just harmful to us, the fans, they are a slap in the face to the entire science fiction genre.

You have this Farscape fan's support.

Dear Idefix:
(cute name, so are you french or just a franco...?)
I think you read too much into my mention of SciFi, who you obviously have a beef with regarding some show I know nothing about.

As for 'all the world is complaining'...that's exactly what I'm talking about-
It's not all the world, it's a relatively small group of people like you who care!
If all the world was watching that show, it would'nt have been cancelled.

SciFi has interesting, unconventional stuff, which is more than I can say for about 85% of what's on my digital cable guide.

esme - Sci-Fi has publically stated that they are no longer interested in airing "space based" programming. They are trying for Earth-centric paranormal mass appeal shows these days.

well... they're going to have to change their name then, aren't they? i'm not a genre-specific viewer, but to me the name SciFi screams 'space-based'.
i don't really follow their public policy statements, i have to say. i just meant that SOME channel (insert whatever channel you wish) could show all the eps back to back...

SciFi is very much going away from their edginess of the past. They have killed The Chronicle, I-Man, Farscape, G vs E, among other things. SciFi is trying to go mainstream with reality based shows, John Edward, and of course the mucho expensive X-Files rights. Any channel that decides to make a television show out of Tremors and wants to remake Quantum Leap sans Sam Beckett is unoriginal.

And after the Farscape cancellation, SciFi bad enormous bad press attached to it which still trails them today. Everytime SciFi is mentioned, the FS cancellation is almost always mentioned.

I'd like to see both shows continue but I truly, geniunely think SciFi is a long shot for either show.

I really wish the Sci-Fi Channel was a safe haven for good, original sci-fi shows. Unfortunately it isn't anymore.

I was jazzed when I heard the rumors earlier this year that Sci-Fi might rerun eps of Firefly. I thought that was an awesome move ... but then the entire network did an about face with its programming and the network has gone to hell.

As for its name - well Sci-Lie and Psi-Fi are popular votes for the new name now ... or we just call 'em Skiffy.

But, anyway, I don't see Joss giving up on Firefly and I'm sure somebody out there thinks Firefly could be a valuable asset to them.

FIREFAN

My take on this cancellation is pretty this:

Television has become a fruitless wasteland for the majority segment of people who lack any real attention span. Drama shows such as Law & Order only do well because they keep each scene to less than 1 minute and never really endear to you to a characters' cause or reason.

Not to mention that television programming has become a 'fad' based insdustry. An earlier post mentioned Sci-Fi channel switching to 'Earth based paranormal' shows. Too bad science fiction can't be a reality show, then it would be on every channel, all day.

Firefly is a great show that has offered a different view of the future than any sci-fi show I've seen. Hopefully another network will pick it up.

The Sci-Fi Channel says that they are going away from space based shows (to justify the cancellation of Farscape), though they are going into production on a new Battlestar Galactica mini-series/pilot in March which contradicts that statement. You can't get anymore space based than Battlestar Galactica. UPN is the only real chance for Firefly. Joss already has a show there and UPN has a ready made audience for Firefly because they show Buffy and Enterprise. My guess is that even if Firefly doesn’t make it to UPN Joss's next show will end up on UPN.

Just a comment from a Farscape fan who has supported Firefly: Sorry you missed Farscape, honey, but it's a GREAT show. If you like Firefly at all you would have loved Farscape. Remotely similar, and both very good in their own way. Both Fox and Sci-Fi have made some serious errors. You should check out the reruns, starting this month.

COMMONSENSEMAN

Well am I the only one that thought Haken was being sarcastic with the title of this article, to point out that USA Today has their heads up their butts?

But anyway I am not sure what official sources USA Today uses but I work for FOX and they just sent down to all the FOX stations an internal teleconference and in that teleconference the Prez of Programing stated that Firefly is only on Hiatus and they are looking for a new time slot.

This just came down yesterday 12/12 and again today 12/13 so if they have already changed their minds it was awful quick.

UPN, hopefully; TNT, ye gods I hope not. TNT is the den of iniquity as far as "non-interference" with shows goes -- just look at what they tried to do to the fifth season of Babylon 5, and how they hamstrung its sequel "Crusade". TNT would insist on more violence, more sex, less plot.

Go for UPN. That's where I'll be sending all my postcards.

If you aren't interested in Farscape, fine. No big deal. It just seemed that you may, because you are obviously interested in that type of show. Whatever...

Hey have a great holiday season.

Sorry for the loss of Firefly--it's a great show. Maybe someone else will pick it up.
