Joss Whedon used every cost-cutting trick he knew — or could invent — to keep production of the sci-fi feature "Serenity" in L.A...

For those of us who actually LIKED the movie (and are interested in production info), here is a behind-the-scenes look at how Serenity was made. I only noticed a few very minor spoilers (for those strange people who have not yet seen the movie, and yet continue to read these posts - what's that about? )...

If they're anything like me, there's a few series newbies who are trying to finish the Firefly DVD set before going to see the movie. My wife and I have been rabid fans since we started the set two weeks ago, but we just saw the movie for the first time last night.

We almost didn't make it. It's no longer playing anywhere within 50 miles of here after tomorrow. We have six movie theaters in the area and only one theater got Serenity - and only showed it on one screen.

Hope you noticed the crooked smile on my virtual face when I said "strange people" I realize that new folks are dropping by every day, which makes it even worse when I think of them seeing so many anti-Serenity posts here - there are always vocal minorities in every group - I just ignore them.

Suffice it to say I LOVED every aspect of the movie, from plot and characterization to lighting and camera work. Also, I am not a Joss fan, nor Buffy fan, nor Angel fan - not really a "fan" at all. I just like Firefly and Serenity for what they are - great storytelling. Period.

Anyway, enjoy the article...

I agree. I just think Joss tried to tell too big of a story in too short of a time. He has said that he basically wrote a season of Firefly and then tried to condense it to a 90-minute movie, and I think that shows. Everything in there was pure gold, it was just way too much and such a frenetic pace, with no subtleties or pensive moments or dinner table scenes. I was exhausted by the end and not nearly as satisfied as I am after an episode of Firefly.

Some of those strange people are called (i.e., probably other Europeans, too) GERMANS, like myself, who did not have a chance to see the BDM, because it is not coming to German cinemas before late November :(

Great articles!
Thanx!

The BDM is only playing in one theater my way, as well. I've still been trying to go everyday. We have a "second-hand" theater that plays not-so-new-releases. I plan on being there everyday Serenity is there, as well. Gotta sustain until the DVD!
