REAVERCHOW

As noted in another threads, on this board & others, the following articles have or will appear this week in various publications, quoting Joss. To re-cap:

In EW (#855 12/23/05) titled "Adios, 'Firefly'":

"Alas, Whedon's fond memories are also tainted by Serenity's status
as a franchise nonstarter, despite Universal's best marketing efforts,
the film only mustered $25 million. "In the end, it was what it was: a
tough sell," says Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has
reached its conclusion. He has no regrets - and he's moving on....As
for Serenity, "I have closure," he says. "And now, I can have it in my
home - which means that I can actually stop working on it."

and:

But there is this seemingly contradictory piece frm TVGuide.com from 2
days or so ago from Joss:

" Are you considering any future installments of the Serenity/Firefly
franchise? Whedon: It's hard to say. I think the DVD sales will have a
lot to say about that. Are there more stories to tell? You bet. Would
I love to tell them and work with everyone again? The answer is also
yup. Now, the movie did not get a huge amount of people out to see it.
We'll need the DVD to make the money back. But I rule out nothing. I
think it's the type of movie that can be discovered on DVD. It has
definitely affected the people who have seen it."

Course, then there is this:

from ComingSoon.com

"What's going to happen with the "Serenity" franchise now? Are you
just going to put it on the backburner?
Whedon: Yeah, you know, that's pretty much it. It was hard to make
and I'm very tired. I need some sleep, and then we'll see if people
are interested in more, than I have more say."

Joss sounds VERY tired and discouraged. Understandably.

I say it *ISN'T* time to quit, but time to rally the Browncoat community - to let Joss know we still care. It may encourage him, and if it doesn't, at least it will be a final thank you to him for the joy he's brought us!

I have already confered with the AZ_Browncoats@yahoogroups.com, and the Florida group (and will hit the Illinois group later tonight) and
suggested that we get EVERY Browncoat available to write *personally*
to Joss - email *&* snailmail and tell him how much we apperciate
Firefly/Serenity, and we know he is tired but please not to give up
just yet - to hold the line a little longer.

So far, I've had a lot of takers, but this needs to be more than a
single state effort. We need We need to let Joss know we care.

Here are the addesses I have so far:

Joss Whedon
C/O Marvel Entertainment, Inc.
417 5th Avenue
New York, NY 10016

Joss Whedon's Serenity Comics
c/o Dark Horse Comics
10956 SE Main Street
Milwaukie, OR
97222

Hold the line a little longer! *Joss* TAUGHT me to never give up on my hopes and dreams - time to return the favor. He made me a part of a shared family. The Browncoats. (The only other group I felt at how with since I left the University - and atheists and Buddhists there.) Firefly taught me the value of family, and fighting for that family - well, he rekindled it at a time where I am battling for custody with an ex wife who left me after numerious once night stands and cheating, and was on the verge of giving up. He (Joss) gave me hope in family again. I was gonna give up, but Firefly/Serenity made me see that would be wrong. Way wrong.

"It ain't all books and charts you know little albatros. You know the secret of flying? ... Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home." - Mal, Serenity.

(Apply this to *family*, it means the same.)

"I don't care what you believe in - just believe in it!"

Yeah. "despite Universal's best marketing efforts" my shiny monkey butt. The movie was released on less then half the screens that the Blair Witch Project opened with, even though we had more than 4 times the online furvor. Uni humped us on this one folks. I know if my town, the one theater that had one copy on one screen was sold out each show for over a week. Fact of the matter is that people just couldn't get in to watch it. I have little doubt that Joss and Universal wanted the online masses to flood the theaters, and we did. They wanted us to tell people, and we did. We were expected to bring the unwashed masses in for a little Koolaid drinking party, and we did. But when you don't bring enough cups and the sugary powder runs low, you can't get them a tall refreshing glass of Serenity. I guess they expected Joss to walk out, pray, and the copies of the film would multiply like a jewish guy did with loves and fishes a few years back. But that ain't real folks. I'm torn between wether that film should have even been made, but then I suppose it is better to have loved and lost, eh? I think we can see Universal's idea of marketing everywhere, even on the DVD cover art, which reflects nothing but the actors that were in the movie, and I can only imagine what they'll botch on the disk itself. Folks, we've been humped on this one. A chance to redeem Hollywoods great decay with a Franchise for the ages, but now we're stuck with reruns of a cancelled gem, and the movie that was spawned from it.
This isn't the first franchise that Universal jumped the shark with, and I doubt its the last. But hey, at least we have Bloodrayne, Poseidon (at least the TV version had Baldwin), and the Pink Panther. Remake, remake, remake. And don't forget the remake of Serenity coming in 2025, staring Ashton Kutcher's Kid as Mal!

Oh, now sir. I'm not a troll, I just speak out when I see something of interest. I know my two posts are negatively based, but those are the only two things that I felt that hadn't been said already. that can be the trouble with central communities. So many people are there, and invariably 95 percent of posts just repeat what someone else has said, typically further up on that thread. Now, calling someone out is generally considered rude where I come from, and I would ask that if you disagree with my opinions, which is your right, then back it up with facts. Mine is easily done. Just compare the amount of screens Serenity was released on in comparison to any movie. Just pick a Martin Lawrence movie for example, and compare to our numbers.

EDIT: Now that I've looked up what you would consider a troll to be, I should think that the essay written in your profile would be rife with material for a FanFic troll of the year award, sir. I AM a fan of teh Verse with 15 conversions under my belt, 4 DVD sets purchased by those converters, an RPG book by one of them, as well as having seen the movie 3 times in the theater. Now be nice for gorram sake, or Santa Badger won't bring you any fruit.

Now I'm just as big a Firefly fan as anyone out else out there, but I haven't to be vocal in my opinions at this point:

Doesn't anyone else agree with me that it's time to let things go? We've already achieved the rare and impossible by getting a movie that, as Joss once eloquently put it, 'shouldn't exist', yet does. Isn't that enough? I think we're at the end of our journey, here, folks...the movie tied up almost all of the nagging questions that the series left us with. I think PVPonline.com's Scott Kurtz puts it best:

"Okay.

Angela and I saw Serenity in the best possible conditions: at a sneak peek with hundreds of Firefly fans. The movie was exciting, fast, funny, and reminded me why I fell in love with these characters in the first place. As a fan of Firefly, it delivered 100%.

Walking into the movie, we have expectations and unanswered questions left by the cancelled show:

1) Why is the alliance after River? What did they do to her and why?
2) Will Mal and Innara ever work out?
3) Will Simon and Kayleigh ever hook up?
4) What are the Reavers?
5) What is the deal with Shepherd Book's past?

The movie tied up every single one of these questions as far as I'm concerned. Joss tied up every loose end. The alliance made the reavers. Simon and Kayleigh hook up finally. Mal and Innara, in one exchange, figure out how to coexist without pushing each other away. The Reavers were made by the Pax. Maybe River was designed to fight them. I personally think that Book was once an operative like the one chasing the crew in this movie. I think he was once a believer for the alliance and much like the operative in this movie, he woke up and broke away. Everything got tied up.

And there were consequences. Changing consequences. The Alliance Parliament was shaken. Wash died. Book died. River was cured of a huge mental problem. Things are changed in that universe.

Which may mean that we won't be getting more Firefly. It certainly, in my opinion, means Joss Whedon is assuming we wont.

Serenity wasn't movie #1. It was movie #3. We got Return of the Jedi first because I don't think Joss was certain that if he started with movie #1 he would ever get a chance to show us movie #3. So he gave us the last movie first.

He let us see how things end first. He let us peek at the last page of his novel. He wanted to make sure that his fans got to see how everything ended. The final chapter. He gave us that first.

I really like that Serenity was so final. I like that we got to see how these guys end up. That they went through a lot but ended up okay, and made a difference in their world. I don't feel so sad now about the loss of the show because he gave us closure on these characters. I really can't thank Joss enough for doing that.

It's really a brilliant move.

So bottom line. Serenity really kicked me in the balls. It was fun, exciting and most importantly, satisfying. It really helped me scratch the itch that I couldn't reach after Firefly was taken from me.

Thank you Joss!"

~Scott Kurtz

In my opinion, at this point, wouldn't pushing Joss and the Serenity/Firefly cast for more makes us appear a little crazy-obsessive and ungrateful...?

I think it's time to let the line go and let this ship sail. You can't say we weren't successful after everything we've all done and after all we've accomplished...

Just because we've reached our end doesn't mean it has to be the end. We've become a tight community of friends...we've also all become family...none of this would've EVER probably happened if it weren't for Firefly/Serenity. We've gotten SO much more than just a series and a movie.

Finally, just because we've reached our end doesn't mean we're not Browncoats anymore...nothing can take that away from us.

I'll step off my soapbox now...sorry if I upset anyone; that wasn't my intention (feel free to flame me). I just wanted to give everyone some things to think about.

Actually, I have to disagree with Scott Kurtz. Of his list of five questions, I think the movie only really answered #3 and #4 to satisfaction (it certainly didn’t answer #5). To continue the Star Wars metaphor, we only saw “New Hope” - River herself. We learned more of what she is capable of, but we still do not have a solid explanation for why the Alliance had the reader program to start with. We speculate – to be assassins, or Reaver hunters, or spies to work within the Alliance and report to the Blue Sun corp - but we don't know. Where’s my tidy video from the last survivor on Miranda to explain in detail exactly why it all happened? I won’t consider River’s part in the Firefly verse complete until she gets to go back to the “school,” deal with the replacement for her that you know they’ve been working on as a contingency plan, free other “students,” and, most importantly, beat the living snot out of some Blue Hand guys. That is movie #3.

The ‘verse is in flux at the end of Serenity. Our BDH’s will have defiantly attracted the attention of the Alliance with their actions. The Blue Hands will want their experiment back. The Operative tries to atone and helps to keep our crew one step ahead of the opposition – all the while feeding them choice tidbits about a revolution brewing on the planets. Mal and Inara are on uncertain relationship footing (hopeful, but not confirmed). Zoe has to deal with losing Wash (cry). Mal has new war demons to lay to rest. Jayne still needs to shoot things.

I respect that Joss wants to take a break. I look forward to a Buffy movie. But I hope that when he’s all rested up, his mind will turn back to the verse he set in motion, because there’s still plenty of story to tell.

I totally agree. CBY and CinemaFreak sound like Jayne and Kayleigh. It's kind of silly, actually. GET OVER IT!!!!
As for everyone saying that Joss is done. Give me a break! We all know that once you're a part of this 'verse, it NEVER leaves you. I think that the whole "Joss gave us episode 3 first" is a crock and a stretch, not to mention kind of a sad way to look at things.
All I can say is that I will never get enough because this show, this 'verse, this little crew on this little ship that we love so much has taught us all something, and that is to never give up hope. Time will go on, people will move on but we will forever have this little gem of a thing that taught us to believe. Think about it, how can we, as loyal and devoted fans, give up on something that we worked so hard to keep alive? We all know that Joss is a fan, the most hard core fan there is, and he worked his ass off for our BDM. Of course he's tired, who wouldn't be? Of course he's maybe a little frustrated and dejected that not everyone in the entire world loved his creation as much as he (and we) did. You know what though? When a person invests that much of themselves in something like Serenity, you can't just walk away. If--and this is a big if--we don't get another movie out of all of this, then so be it. I'm sure that we'll all see the 'verse's influence in other Joss movies/works, and just think, that will open the door to us for other things to begin to love and enjoy just as much as this.
I say we rally around our Big Damn Director/Writer/Creator/Hero and tell him just how much we love him the other Big Damn things associated with Firefly and Serenity.
Keep those spirits up! The signal will not be lost, ever. And for heavens' sake, STOP bickering! You're like children, and as much as I love kids I hate whiners. Keep it up, and you'll both be eligible for troll-hood.

Wacky fun!

Totally agree with Universal dropping the ball on this one. I'm really ticked. The odds were against it and it's like Universal wanted Joss to fail. The movie comes out in late Sept. after the summer "blockbusters", little or no advertising, and then it was pulled from theaters after a month. C'mon! It has always been a word of mouth show and movie. I'm sure given a little more time it would have caught on. I was going to go see it again but it was gone. But noooo, crap like Flightplan is still out in theaters. Critics loved Serenity and even said it's what the Star Wars (I, II, III) movies should have been. Now that says a lot.

Now that I think of it Lucas should have had Joss write and direct I,II,III. Imagine how much better they would have been. Then Joss could have taken his money and made Firefly episodes and Serenity movies with his own indie movie co. Ah to dream.

But then friends who went to see Serenity, said it was really good! and you know what they were right!
So browed the DVD of the TV show now I love it, Firefly is loads better.

Yes that guy’s right we have closure on the story, but that doesn’t stop me wonting more!

My wife noticed a few of the changes to the cover and got a little ticked, finally understanding my stand on Universal. but anyway, I think the content speaks for itself. Maybe someone should just make an alternate DVD cover and propagate it around the internet. Browncoats all over printing it and wrapping their DVD's with it. That would be cool.

I started getting into Firefly about a month ago, through a different site. There were Firefly fans on there and they said about how good it was, about the characters and the plots, and I got the boxset for Christmas. I'm only half way through it so far but it's a wicked series. I plan on seeing the movie (though the stupid cinema only kept it on for a week or two, or I would have seen it already).

I'd love for there to be another film/series at some point in the future. And through sites likes this and the one that got me into Firefly, will see it too, like anything it's going to gain fans as it goes along. I really hope the DVD sales are great, so as to encourage to possibility of something else continuing with this franchise. I certainly don't want it to end, I've only just found it.

I kinda agree with Serenity being the end of the story, at least for now. But it opens up all sorts of possibilites for more story to come. There was never a hard mention of how much time had passed between the last episode of the series and the movie. For people who love Wash and Book there is the perfect opportunity for more storylines involving those 2 before their untimely deaths. What happens after they pass? Where does the crew go after Serenity? What I would love to happen is for the series to come back right where it left off, and be in time before Serenity. Future movies or even a new series could be made about what happens afterwards. I sincerely hope that this is not the end for our fair crew, the time spent was short but it was well worth the grief.

I don't agree or disagree with the statement that the movie was the end. It could be, it surely has all that it needs to end the firefly/serenity verse. What it doesnt need though is people giving up on it. Joss frankly stated that this movie shouldnt have happened, he didnt say it was the end, he didnt say he wanted it to end. In fact he stated numerous times how much he loved the show and the crew. So why would he just end it. I dont think he did. I think he gave the movie all it needed as the oppurtunity for closure if it did fail. But I firmly believe that he doesnt want it to end, if the browncoats rally he will for sure rally with us. Just because poeple are saying this is the end doesnt mean it has to be. The browncoats took a show that was supposed to end earlier than it did and kept it going longer than it was supposed to, then to further just slap every tv/movie critic and company in the face got a movie made out of a show that only lasted 14 episodes. No fandum has every done that, and believe you me if the browncoats get out there and prove to everybody that firefly isnt dead and wont be someone will get off thier gorramn behind and do something. This may be idle chatter, this may be a hopeless cause, but the only sure fact is that if we give up than the show is dead.

Serenity and Firefly are holding the Amazon Top Sellers DVD Chart with Serenity at #2 and Firefly at #3. Given the competition around Christmas and the New Year, it would appear to be a fantastic performance.

Firefly has rarely dropped from the Top 10 in the last few months, and WalMart even was forced to suspend sales of Firefly as they ran out of the product.

How can one read this and think that the show is dying.

"There was never a hard mention of how much time had passed between the last episode of the series and the movie."

Wastegate 13 - I think they did reference a timeframe - at least Mal says to Simon "8 months - 8 months you had her on my boat" referring to River - which would have been from the start of the series when they first boarded. The run of the series (just guessing here) I think covers about 5-6 months. River was 16 in the series - but is 17 in the movie so obviously her birthday was in here somewhere - so I think the time could only be about 2-3 months tops between the last ep and the movie, probably more like 2. Of course I'm just guessing here.

I agree though - I would love to see anything more made with this 'verse - in any timeframe.
