The last survivor of the sinking of the Titanic has died aged 97.
Millvina Dean was nine weeks old when the liner sank after hitting an iceberg in the early hours of 15 April 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton.
The disaster resulted in the deaths of 1,517 people in the north Atlantic, largely due to a lack of lifeboats.
Miss Dean, who remembered nothing of the fateful journey, died on Sunday at the care home in Hampshire where she lived, two of her friends told the BBC.
Her family had been travelling in third class to America, where they hoped to start a new life and open a tobacconist's shop in Kansas.
Miss Dean's mother, Georgetta, and two-year-old brother, Bert, also survived, but her father, Bertram, was among those who perished when the vessel sank.

I believe I also read that she died on the 98th anniversary of the Titanic's initial launch.

Too bad I don't own a time machine because if I did I would transfer your ass back in time aboard the Titanic 1 second before it finally sinks, and NO there won't be any Leonardo Debendover's trying to save you by placing you on a floating door.

Thanks, troll. Not quite relevant to the thread, but then, you are what you are.

That was the maiden voyage--I'm talking about when the hull was first put in the ocean while still under construction.

From rmstitanic.net:

"On May 31, 1911, her superstructure completed, Titanic slipped gracefully into the River Lagan launched on twenty-two tons of tallow, train oil, and soap, and was towed to the fitting out basin. It was now time for the three thousand carpenters, engineers, electricians, plumbers, painters, master mechanics, and interior designers to fit the Titanic with the latest in marine technology and the most sumptuous fixtures and furniture."

That is one of those coincidences that makes me love history.

In the same vein, Titanic hitting the iceberg and sinking coincide with the Lincoln assassination and the Apollo 13 accident.

Anyone ever heard of Violet Jessop? If not, look her up. Pretty astonishing story, hers - she served on - and survived accidents, sinkings, and near-sinkings - all three of the White Star Line's sister ships: first the Oceanic, which collided with HMS Hawke and was heavily damaged; then Titanic, which sunk; and lastly, the Brittanic, last of the sister ships, which was converted to a hospital ship during WWI and on which Ms. Jessop served as a nurse, when it struck a mine and sank in the Aegean Sea in 1916.

I don't know if this was the luckiest woman in the world, or the unluckiest, but she managed to survive all three ships...
