Freaking amazing. Roddick played this whole tournament like he's never played before. He's completely changed his game, and I don't think there's anyone else who could have challenged Federer in such a way.

I was actually rooting for Andy (he lives here in Austin), but Federer is my overall favorite player. Neither of them have any shame after a battle like this.

Five sets, no tie-break on the last set... BRUTAL. Federer finished out 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14. 77 games total. Roddick's serve was only broken on the final game.

Nobody's ever seen a match like this, because there's never BEEN a match like this.

And it was Federer's 15th Grand Slam win, which puts him at all-time # 1, surpassing Pete Sampras, who flew into London this morning to attend the match.

Now on to the U.S. Open!

I thought Andy was done back after he lost the 3rd, but damn.... he cranked up his game another level. And I have to say, I'm so glad to have Johnny Mcenroe up in the booth.

If you like Johnny Mac doing commentary, check out some of Tennis Channel's coverage sometime, when they've got Martina Navratilova doing play-by-play. Her depth of knowledge is simply astonishing when it comes to tennis, and she does a smashing job of explaining the finer points and technical aspects of the game, the players, and their shots.

As for Andy, I don't know what's gotten into him. He changed to a new coach, and I'd have to say that I'd credit the coach with being able to get Andy to raise his game to a whole new level. He's always had the devastating serve, he's always been quick on his feet. Now he's added some amazing crosscourt shots, passing shots, and down-the-line shots to his arsenal. And rather than REACTING to the other player's game, Andy is taking charge, placing his opponent where he wants him, and then striking. Time after time you'd see him putting Federer on defense, pulling him out of position with a crazy-angle crosscourt, and then - if Roger was good enough to return the crosscourt - taking advantage of him being drawn out of position, far to one side, to fire a shot down the opposite line, far out of reach.

I saw him doing it against Andy Murray, and realized that Roddick wasn't playing the same game he has in the past - and the game for which everyone else had prepared. Here he was with a whole new bag of tricks.

The road to the U.S. Open is going to be quite interesting. I'll be rooting for Andy to take the championship. He's worked his ass off to earn it! Just that final set he and Federer played would have kicked my ass! And they played it AFTER playing four grueling sets leading up to it.

Again, my hat's off to both of them. Amazing athletes, and damn good sports in the bargain.

Great match! I don't think there has ever been a finer display of serving prowess. Only 3 service breaks during that marathon...are you kidding me? It's amazing that Federer had a 2 to 1 advantage over Roddick in aces. During the fifth set I got the sense that Federer's service games were a little more shaky than Roddick's, but in true champion form he kept digging himself out of trouble.

Roddick's turnaround in terms of fitness and dedication is very reminiscent of what Agassi did late in his career. Considering Andy's age this is a very good sign for his future. I'm not sure if anyone else could have kept at such a high level both physically and mentally as he did during the course of this match. I did not think he had that kind of intenstinal fortitude. He deserves a ton of credit for what he accomplished today. If he had been playing anyone else I firmly believe he would have hoisted that trophy. He may have been beaten but he certainly did not lose.

Cannot wait for the U.S. Open.
