For those of us who refuse to install iTunes, would it be possible to give more informations? Name of the artist(s) and/or the album so we can try to find an excerpt elsewhere.

Thanks.

The only problem I have with iTunes is that I need to give them my credit card info, etc *before* having an account. So, I can't even get the *free* content off of iTunes because I refuse to needlessly spread around my sensitive info.

So, as has been said above, is there another link to somewhere where those of us that don't use/refuse to use iTunes can get the info/hear the track?

A.k.a. DOWN WITH SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS MAKING A LIVING OFF WHAT THEY DO !!!!

Seriously, I've done some OSS development. But, I'd *never* go so far as to say that. That's just crazy talk.

no, you misunderstand me. my objection is to the system that says if you want to use our hardware, you MUST use our software, and you can only get parts/accessories from US. ie the rest of apple.

i prefer the more open standard of the pc world. where you can get a wide variety of hardware & Software that function similarly from a wide variety of manufacturers.

while i do prefer free open source software in general, i wouldn't go so far as to say individuals shouldn't make a living from their software. if it's good.

it was mainly meant as an anti-apple rant.

The song is "Firefly Theme" from the album "Escapade Velocity" by The SG Sound. You can hear a free sample at Amazon.com :

Until I heard this song, I had not realized that Professor Stephen Hawking had a singing career.

No, you just didn't say what you meant. I responded to what you wrote. If you wanted to say what you said below, then you should have wrote that. In other words, don't assume that other people are wrong for properly interpreting what you wrote, when in reality you didn't write what you meant.

Oh yah, the open world of closed hardware and software of the PCs. Except, you know, there's more variety of closed hardware and software. Hypocrite.

There's also the fact that the *vast* majority of PC users get there hardware/software from Dell, etc where Dell, etc are effectively "Apple's" for the PC world. In other words, there's little difference for the average user between Mac v.s. PC. Except that Apple doesn't provide low-end machines.

I should also point out that I have both Ubuntu and OpenBSD installed on my Mac Mini. So much for "you MUST use our software", eh.

You should also take a look through even Apple's on-line store. There's a variety of manufacturers on it providing accessories, etc. Not to mention the fact that there are other companies that provide Mac accessories/etc not in there store. So much for "you can only get parts/accessories from US", eh.

Know your facts, not your propaganda.

Then you should have wrote an anti-apple rant instead of making a grand sweeping statement. Also, see the first part of my reply.

Seriously, we could go back and forth of the evils of both Apple and the companies of the PC world. But, really, what would that accomplish? Both have pros and cons and those will depend on the needs of the individual user. Similarly for OSS v.s. commercial software.

I did! I did! Quoting myself, "Until I heard this song, I had not realized that Professor Stephen Hawking had a singing career." Why use a 4 letter word when I can, at the same time, cruelly mock my betters and the song?

The other music samples on the album are far superior. It's only the Firefly Theme that went so very wrong.

ya know what? you win douchebag. i REALLY wasn't trying to start an argument with someone i don't even know. When to me, at least, it was CLEARLY meant as a snarky/ jesty comment, not the beginning of a flame war with a complete stranger. so call me what you will. i am done.

...People can mind-read intentions now? I want me some of that.

To simplify this argument, maybe you didn't MISunderstand him, but he clarified beyond the general statement he made. If that's what he said he DID mean, then we can only take him at face value.

Most people react unfavourably to being called a "hypocrite."

However, I grant that for a while there, PCs were the exclusive domain of a certain OS and software company, except for people who knew about alternatives. As such, bought from the store, arguments could be made in regards to both PCs and Macs being OS exclusive.

And I also grant that people who refuse to use either operating platform have, in many cases, entered the realm of "screw their wages, this should be free."

Not exactly sure who you're saying can read minds. If it's me, no, I didn't even allude to that. I was commenting on his re-interpretation of what he said and pointing out that the two did not come even close to the same meaning. He's going to have to learn to write what he means instead of thinking that people are listening to his inner most thoughts when he wrote a post, while they read it.

I should point out that he still doesn't get it as is clear in his last response.

It's sad really.

My answer to that would be, if you don't want to be called a hypocrite, then don't be a hypocrite. Opttimus1998 was being a hypocrite and I pointed it out with proof. Not be be harsh, but his inability to handle that is not my problem.

I should also point out the really sad part. He says:

Quote:

not the beginning of a flame war with a complete stranger

When what he said, IS the beginning of a flame war. I mean, he did refer to what he wrote and an "anti-apple rant". In what world do rants against Apple not (potentially) the start of a flame war? Seriously

But, I should point out that I didn't really write a, at least, (typical) flame war post. For that matter, I do not believe that correcting someone on facts is a flame war post. Which is what I did.

Also, I did reference that Apple does do some evil things (not exactly a Apple "fan boy" thing to do either). Not to mention that I also stated:

Quote:

Both have pros and cons and those will depend on the needs of the individual user.

Which alludes to the notion of a balance in the decision making process of what is better for that individual. So, much for that flame war thing on my side.

Interesting isn't it. As soon as someone takes a lashing for being grossly wrong about something, if it's between two things that are known for flame wars, then it's the beginning of a flame war. No, it couldn't just be a correction on someone being wrong. No, not at all.

(EDIT: I should point out that my last paragraph of my last point explicitly stated that I wasn't going to participate in a flame war. This guy really needs to start reading.)

Then there's also that lovely:

Quote:

i wouldn't go so far as to say individuals shouldn't make a living from their software. if it's good.

I mean, how arrogant is that? For one, "good" is a very subjective thing. But, who cares about good? How arrogant is it to say that if some software isn't "good," then one shouldn't be able to make a living off of it?

Spot on. That, "except for people who knew about alternatives" is still largely true. Many (most?) people in the (F)OSS community like to think that Linux has recognition, but that just isn't the case. It's still used by basically only geeks and the general population has largely only heard of it (if that), but doesn't really know what it is. It's a common problem when there really isn't an advertising budget to get the word out.

RMS being one of them. I don't know when it happened. But, that guy is off his nut. He has actually been quoted as saying (paraphrase), "I'd rather every programmer be a taxi cab driver and all software be free than have commercial software available."

Now, as a comment on Optimus1998 (since he seems to allude to that), I really find it sad. His profile states (assuming it's true):

Quote:

swm, 29

Who knows when that was written. If it was when he just signed up (2003), then he could be 35 by now.

But, what 29 year old says things like:

Quote:

douchebag

And:

Quote:

Once, while having sex in a tractor-trailer, part of Chuck Norris' sperm escaped and got into the engine. We now know this truck as Optimus Prime.

And has a tag line:

Quote:

My Brain is Chocked Full of entirely useless knowlege...

And can't capitalize worth a damn? And storms out (in a childish way) the moment someone points out that he doesn't know even close to as much as he thinks he does.

Quite frankly, I'm thinking that his reaction is less about how I put things, and more about a bruised ego.

At any rate, this guy is either lying about his age, or things are quite sad.

And that does it for me in this thread.
