I'm not sure where this headline was, but it's about Science and Space.

Twin astronauts Mark and Scott Kelley were Identicals. But after one of them spent a bunch of time on the Space Station, his DNA changed by 7%, and they are no longer Identical.
I understand the accelerated aging, the loss of muscle and gravity, etc.

But I'm not certain the mechanism of DNA change is intuitively obvious.

Did everybody else already know this would occur? Anybody know how the process works?

Oye. You really shouldn't post things about medical science that you don't understand.

If 7% of his DNA was changed, he would have come home an Ape.

7% of two or three genes were switched on by epigenetics, which basically gave him an auto-immune disorder.

They think the physical stress of being in space had plenty to do with it, but change in diet or even bacteria can do it too. They know that the conditions of space can change tendon and bone strength, and cause neurological changes, so it's not surprising that a body can and will respond to what it perceives as a physical attack anyway.

They stated the DNA was changed 7%. I figured they knew the number better than I. Perhaps they misspoke.

It sounds like they learned some specifics, hope it's applicable for future use.
