Don't read this if you don't wann know...but I had to know myself...

There will be many welcome additions, and that's great, but fans of 2, prepare for some losses also....

"General, would you care to step outside?" - that line is gone (I'm already cryin').

Zod throwing the hick through the wall and truck in East Houstan is gone.

No Niagra Falls scene at all remains(I won't cry too much).

The bomb scene in the Eiffel Tower has been deleted ("I believe this is your floor." Great line, but questionable scene. Ah well).

Oh, and no new dome for the Oval office at the end...being no fan of most Presidents, I can definitly live with that, I guess .

But from what I read, the additions will FAR outweigh the meager losses.

You are definately not alone, Chris. Hopefully this will be an entirely new movie and a great tribute to Christopher Reeve.

Fan is too small a word when it comes to my love for the Supe films. On Nov. 28th I'm getting the ultimate Superman boxset on dvd, and I will need much time to absorb all the new material.

chrisisall,
The Donner cut will indeed be a different animal, and I can't wait. It will be like watching it for the first time.
With the Superman boxset, and the James Bond box sets coming out, I'm gonna be broke.

Oppyh, how did you like Superman Returns? I enjoyed it, but I did have to look past the costume changes, they were a little distracting for me. I liked Spacey as Lex- a lot. And Routh was a fine choice IMO.

I have a sneaking admiration for Supe 3, but find 4 REALLY hard to get through. The director had no clue, and the production value just isn't there for something as grand as a 'Superman' movie...

13 days 'till the Donner Cut...

Side note: I haven't watched Somewhere In Time since Reeve passed. I suspect the waterworks would be too intense.

STORYMARK

I'm certianly looking forward to seeing the Donner cut, but don't expect it to be some magical revelation, or a vastly better Supes 2 than what we got. Reviews so far have been pretty mixed, some calling it the biggest deleted scene ever.

Several of the scenes in Donner's version were never filmed, including a lot of transitional stuff, so the pacing will be a bit choppy. One of the key scenes was only filmed as a screen test, so while it is in this cut, the actors look different (Reeves with shorter hair and much less muscle), and are not actually performing to each other. Also, the Donner cut of 2 has the exact same ending as 1.

It will be interesting to see, though.

I always hate, hate, hated the campy crap Lester threw in. When the three are blowing cars into buildings (Props to the FX guys there), a guy on a phone continues talking and laughing as his phonebooth falls over. Little things like that (There were so many) destroy the realistic feel of drama or peril. When I taped it off ABC, I attempted to edit this garbage out, but my equiptment was understandably limited, so choppy I can deal with.

Choppy as it may be, I am SO down with this version.

Chrisisall,
To me Superman Returns is near perfection. You are exactly right about Spacey, and Routh. They both were fantastic. There should have been a little more Superman in the film though, as this would have completely eliminated the odd pacing of the movie. Routh's Christopher Reeve mannerisms were much appreciated, and it really shows that sticking to the continuity of the original series is important.
It really is funny that some movies are either love, or hate. Superman Returns is a perfect example. Of all the people I know who have seen it either hate it with a firey passion,(A guy I work with walked out halfway through) or think it's a very good film, and a justification that comic book movies can be great.

Oh, and by the way Somewhere in Time is one of the best films of the 80's. Haunting, and very atmospheric. Good to see another fan of such a great film.

Big Reeve fan here, seen everything he's done, including The Fifth Of July, a play in NY in 1980. Even shook his hand backstage after (And my then-girlfriend copped a big hug). He was (is) cool.

WOW.

You gotta see it, Superman fans.
Sure, it ain't perfect, but considering what they had to work with, it's a great achievement.
Biggest problem: the ending. Gone is the atrocious 'kiss of forgetfulness', but the original 'turning time back' had to be used, as in the original script; they couldn't shoot another ending. As a BIG Superman fan myself, I'm grateful for this version, and it totally spoils the theatrical cut for me.
A polite effue to Richard lester for screwing with near-perfection.
I just wish they'd kept the 'soufle' scene. Ah well, a minor nit to pick.

I loved it.

A few comments on the film:

-Clark Kent seems much more vulnerable, and way more in love with Lois, than in the Lester cut. For the first time after watching the Theatrical cut countless times, I really felt the despair of Clark, and the regret of his decision. Never will you see Superman more human, and flawed than in the Donner cut.

-All the Brando scenes are great.

-The dialouge between Lex, and Miss Teschmaker(probably spelled that wrong) are fantastic, and funny.

-General Zod, and Ursa in the White House are just sinister. Zod gunning down guards with a smile on his face is a little disturbing. A guard is cowering before Ursa, and when he thinks she is going to let him go she gives him a super kick in the face. Pure evil, and that's how they are supposed to be. Thank you Donner.

-Superman giving Non a haymaker of a punch, sending him through a building. Just cool. You don't see the fierce side of Superman too often.

I do miss the fireplace scene with Lois, and Clark at Niagra Falls, but that is about it.
The deleted scenes???????? What? The whole point of the Donner cut is to have as much of his footage as possible thrown back in. Clean those babies up, and get em in the movie. They were great.

I agree, but Donner and Thau don't, obviously.
I was surprised how much I DIDN'T miss the Lester stuff, seeing as I basically grew up with it.
But the "General, would you care to step outside?" line...why take THAT out?

On the whole though, I was blown away. It really was like seeing it for the first time.
