Is DA best viewed full screen or widescreen?
I'll let the usual suspects deposit their opinions.

Well, I always prefer the widescreen - I have this tiny TV in my room - and it's never as fun watching it on that. I have to go downstairs ro watch it on the widescreen - and the volume turned up really loud. Ah, widescreen is always more fun.
I couldn't really comment on what the r1 DVD's are like, not owning them and such. I would really have liked to see it without all the edges trimmed off though.

given that i watch all my dvds on a widescreen projector i get a much larger picture with the anamorpic version compared to the 4:3 so i like it that way.

also, as i mentioned in the other thread, at no point whilst watching em did i feel that i was missing bits of the picture due to cropping to make it fit 16:9. due to them shooting it in such a way as to be croppable, as you mentioned in the other thread, you may even find that the camera work looks better this way.

HE he - I always think of Chrisisall as 494 myself (or possibly 493?? Do yer friends still have their teeth??)

I like to see myself as 453 - just that little bit less than perfect (a cheap copy of perfection maybe)....

The DVD I have doesn't seem to offer me any choices of how to watch it - or is that something the TV does (I'm clueless)??

Plus, Chrisisall, you mentioned (I'm almost sure) in a previous discussion something about commentaries on the final disc outlining what was due to happen in the next series etc (or did I make that up?) .... if they are there, I'm buggered if I can find them!!

Those commentaries are for whatever reason exclusive to the region 1 set. There's also one or two commentaries by Jessica and Michael together, and it's a little strange, 'cause they did the commentary for the eps after they split, so you feel a certain formal distance between them as you listen.

And I'm actually Chrisisall 524...that's part of my real barcode #

I am aware sometimes that you see down to peoples feet in a lot of shots where it isn't necessary which leads me to believe they basically cropped the lower quarter of the screen as photographed to produce the widescreen effect.

*Zoot grinds teeth in annoyance* - I knew us region 2 watchers were being short-changed!! Is it worth me getting the region 1 DVDs at least for season 2??

I’ve been meaning to say to you, BTW, Chrisisall, that I had a general problem with season 2 versus season 1, in that it seem to be edited in a much sloppier, less polished fashion… A lot of the “go to break” cliffhangers, were just not as slick and there were several instances where they seemed to jar. Did you notice this at all?

There were even instances where a characters speech was unnaturally amputated and we faded to black a bit too early – plus there were some where the character said the same thing twice- obviously in the TV version, before and after the commercial break, which felt all manner of wrong!!

It disappointed me a bit that they seemed to take less trouble over season 2 – despite the fact that I do love season 2 almost as much as I love season 1…

PS - I really, REALLY wanna hear Jessica and Michael being coldly formal towards each other - It'll feel that little bit voyeristic but I'll love it nonetheless ....

In season 2 they were obviously trying to do a lot more on the same budget. Makeup alone took a great deal of time (forget money) and must have slowed the whole process down, giving the editors even less time to work on the daily footage. I also noticed the lighting was simpler in comparison to S1, another sign of time and $ limitations, with the exception of Freak Nation; check out the amazing lighting and camerawork, Mr. Cameron personally will not be so rushed!

To tell the truth, I haven't listened to most of the commentaries in full, they distract me from the eps, although the featuretts are cool. Seein' how the make stuff is always fun. Does your R2 S1 have the bloopers? How about the screen tests for Jessica, Michael, and the rest?

Oh Gawd! Stop tormenting me, you fiend!!!

No my R2 DVD has nothing other than a poxy "Here's how it was" style 10 minute documentary about the idea behind DA - which, let's face it, I already knew, having watched the gorram thing!!

Have just looked on Amazon for region 1 DVD and they seem to think that us old chaps in Blighty could never want such a thing – may have to try and order from Amazon US …

Are these things predominately on one or other set of DVDs or spread between the two?

I like commentaries in general – love the Buffy and Firefly ones, but that’s kinda cos they have different people doing them every time – If it's just Michael and Jessica could get a little dull … (though obviously I’d spend my time listening for sounds of hurt in his voice and inflections implying “I’m sleeping with younger members of the cast so ner!” in hers – dear God, I’m sooo shallow!!) …

And I forgive the less than impressive lighting and editing given constraints of money and time …

Each season has bloopers for that particular season, only S1 has the screentests, Jessica and Michael comment together on only one ep: And Jesus Brought a Casserole (S1, of course). Commentary on Freak Nation has the 'where were they goin' stuff on it. 4 eps per season have commentary by Eglee and producers/writers/directors. 3 short making-of featurettes per season.

There, I dug 'em out and checked for ya.

Not sure if you've seen it on broadcast, but before first season eps aired, a quickly produced explanation appeared on Fox just before the ep narrated by Logan - he tells of the terrorists' nuclear explosion 80 miles up (complete with a shot of the explosion over NW U,S.), and says it was easy for a girl to get lost (Max) but that she had found 'an unlikely ally' in Logan Cale, a man born of wealth and privilage, now using it to fight corrupt government. And that all Max wanted was to find the others like her. Had you seen it? It's not on R1 dvd's. I still have a few eps on tape that have it.

BTW, does anyone think it's strange that Logan refers to a character having 'served in Iraq' (not Gulf War, the character is too young) militairly in the pilot? Pretty Gorram prophetic if you ask me...

I and I Chrisisall
P.S. first season was not broadcast in letterbox (widescreen) normally, only in HD.

evil, I've been doing a lot of lookin' around, and can't seem to find out if DA was shot wide and cropped to fit the tv, or if it was shot normal and cropped top or bottom to get it widescreen.
One source said that in widescreen there's dead space left and right which would indicate they shot it wide originally.
For instance when Logan stands after the transfusion only to fall and be helped up by Max (with no thanks) we see them centered, Max visible standing head to toe with just enough room to see both of them. If it was shot wide, then an R2 version would include more of the table on the right, and a wall to the left, if it was cropped from a normal 4:3 Max' feet would be missing from the shot.
Have any recollection of which it might be?

Poor Chrisisall - Life is truly cruel!! Still “man is born to sorrow as the sparks fly upward” and all that jazz …

Have just been gorram outbid on ebay - dammit to hell and back ... gonna have to be sneaky about upping the bid ...

No, CIA, haven't seem the Michael W narrated summary bit - Another thing I didn't like in series 2 though was the random female voice narrating the "she can't hide, she must fight" speech or whatever it is over the credits ...

Felt bit like Giles' "Into every generation a slayer is born" bit - but at least there it's a character from the show, not just some random narrator ...

It depends :-

1) does your laptop play DVDs?
2) when it plays DVDs does it give you the option of which region to watch them in?

If so, yes you probably would be able to watch them on your laptop ... your laptop might be a multi-region DVD player anyhow (thus speaks Zoot who really knows nothing about these things)!!!

For sheer time, it's not that much, but it's good stuff, certainly.

Select to view spoiler:

in the screentest for the male lead, Jessica (already casted) reads with Michael, and the film-makers animate an arrow going from Jessica's eyes to what part of Michael she's checking out - it's funny.

Sometimes really cheap (and I mean REALLY) don't have anything but playing ability and have no region encoding limitations, but it's a spotty issue. Here in the U.S. Apex made a couple like that, but you have to check...
Being shot wide answers the grain issue, DA is slightly grainier than Buffy- same studio, same film, but different lenses, and then side cropping! Is R2 DA totally equal to Buffy in visual quality, as I expect it should be?

I found region-free players on the net for under $100, that's not an unreasonable price...
On R1 the picture fills the average screen nicely and the faces are all big and bright and such, but they had to zoom in slightly, and this increases grain somewhat, not bad, just noticable to an animorphic fan geek like me.

If you really like commentary about making the episodes - how they shot this, the light kept falling over, we had to rewright, it started raining right in the middle, etc.- the commentaries are good. If you just want the actor's stuff, you might consider only getting S1, it's the only one w/Jessica and Michael, and the only one w/screentests. Both have bloopers, but both are very similar, mostly makin' faces after blowin' lines.
And the commentary in Freak Nation about the show's direction doesn't really say much more than I put in that other thread.
Jus' tryin' to save you some coin...

Ha! I've got no clue the difference between wide screen and normal - due to being pretty dumb and having a TV the same age (almost) as I am (Over 30!! - I may be exaggerating slightly - about the TV, not me)

I checked again, and it's like $30 for the first, and $40 for the second, so just punch up Amazon US, I guess.
And widescreen means you get little black bars top and bottom of the screen, like in Firefly. My R1 DA fills the screen entirely, cause it's been zoomed into slightly, so some of what you see left and right is gone. If you have an old tv, and it's not big, full screen is nice, but I would like to see as much picture as I can, no matter what size it is.
But at 50 pounds per it's bloody unlikely.

You might wanna try looking somewhere else for the DVD's cisall - I've seen them for £19.99 a-piece - which really ain't too shabby considering how much more expensive stuff is over here. (I think they're in HMV btw). Oh, and I picked up mine for £34.99 buy-one-get-one-free in Woolworths - only £17.45 each(ish)! So I'm sure if you went looking (maybe try eBay) you'd find 'em cheaper.
Good Luck!

This is the cheapest I found DA here, so if you can't find it for less, ta-daa.
Plus I found a player that plays PAL for $30!!!Is that insane?

FLF, have you ever bought DVDs from the US??

Have tried to buy the R1 DVDs from Amazon US but they won't ship to the UK - you have to use the UK site, which (grr and woe is me!) don't of course have the R1 sets ...

Tres annoying ...

Thanks Chrisiall - that's real cheap!

Shall ponder it awhile.
