Before The Inside, before Wonderfalls, before even Firefly and Dark Angel, FOX cancelled one of the smartest shows I've ever come across called "Profit." Profit was co-created by David Greenwalt, who later went on to work on Buffy and co-created Angel with the J-man. It just came out on DVD (on Aug 9 2005) with all 8 episodes. Like all the other cancelled series, it just got better and better.

Anyone else see or like this series? I need to connect with fans! Or if anyone knows of a Profit fansite, that would be good too.

I'll have to add that to my list of things to pick up in the near future. I've been preoccupied. I remember it. I remember liking it. I have a tape with a few eps, that I refused to record over. I remember being annoyed when it just went away. Of course this was before I knew enough to pay attention to who made the show, and before I would have known the name Greenwalt anyway. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention, I'll see if I can get a copy at Dragon*con or upon my return. Maybe I'll dig out that tape and see if it still works...........

So good to meet a fellow fan, Dietcoke. What made you buy the DVD series, sight unseen? It's like TV's best kept secret or something.

I won't say it's the best, cause, well, Firefly's the best. But I would rank Profit up there as one of the best scripted TV shows ever, alongside Yes, Prime Minister, Angel, Red Dwarf, and the later seasons of Star Trek DS9.

Based on the recommendations in here, I bought the DVD Friday. I saw the Pilot last night.

I am intrigued but I'm not quite sure if I like it. At this point, to me, the character Profit seems to be evil without any redeeming qualities. I kept expecting him to be played "over-the-top" like a JR but they didn't play him that way.

I'm going to keep watching and see how it develops.

A fellow Browncoat recommended it to me on the boards. We seemed to have similar tastes and so I started reading up on it and all I found was A+ reviews. Tried to Netflix it but there is a very, very, very long wait.

I figured it must have something going for it. Well, plus it was produced and written by David Greenwalt!

Oh, it just gets better with every episode. And he does have some redeeming qualities. Not enough to compensate for the bad but hey, nobody's perfect! ;)

Declan, that is probably why it was cancelled. I heard complaints that there were no truly likeable characters in there. The episodes do get better. Takes a while for the characters to find their place.

In the meantime, isn't it the most twisted plotting ever seen? Greenwalt said in an interview that he really wanted to bring Adrian Pasdar to Angel as a guest star, to play the same character as a lawyer for Wolfram & Hart. It never happened, but that made the character even more deliciously evil for me.

Anyway, go past the first 4 episodes, and it'll start to grow on you. That was FOX's problem of course. They like to cancel after 4 episodes.

Thanks, Dietcoke and CanttaketheSky.

I'll hang in there on Profit. I am also very interested to compare a David Greenwalt only series (Profit) with the Tim Minear only series (Wonderfalls, The Inside) with the Joss Whedon collaborations, Buffy and Angel with Greenwalt and Firefly with Minear. So far, my initial impression is that Joss is the missing (or key) ingredient!

Declan,

I love both Wonderfalls and Profit, and I also find myself making comparisons with Firefly and Angel. I am impressed at how brilliant and strong their writing is without Joss. (Joss doesn't pick slackers!) What I feel is missing though, is Joss' X-factor, magic charisma, instant likeability. He has the ability to emotionally enrapt his audience right out of the gates. Tim and David's writings, as clever as they are, take probably a good 6 episodes to grow on you. Which means they don't stand a chance on "Dead after 4" FOX.

I watched Profit back when it was on. I went out and bought the dvds as soon as they came out. I was thrilled to rewatch over a weekend, esecially with the unaired eps there.
Loved Profit, he was so mena and low down. LOL

Sex and violence on the big screen, where it belongs.

While he was sneaky and manipulative, he was also very, very, smart. It was fun when things didn't go according to plan and then watching how he would get himself out of trouble.

As an employee, he was always well mannered and polite and did things the company way.

While it's a show where you may not find a character you relate to....it is filled with characters that you know. Especially if you have ever worked in a Fortune 500 company.

Personally, this is one of my top 5 favorites shows, ever.

The BDM got in the way but I finally finished Profit over the weekend.

Dietcoke and Canttakethesky are right. The show does grow on you and the character does develop. He's not the pure psycopath that he appears to be in the pilot episode. What makes him most interesting is that he is so civil, so polite, so smiley. He's not an over-the-top TV villian but someone evil that we might have once (unfortunately) met. However, I found myself rooting for him against the ordinary bad people in the company.

I'm half way through the commentary and it mentions that the character and the storytelling technique of having the character talk to the audience comes from Richard III. I know of the play but have never read it or seen it performed. Now, I'm intrigued. And they say no good comes from watching TV...

Hey, glad to hear you got into it. I just got a bunch of local Browncoats into it on Sunday night.

It's definately a word of mouth DVD.
