LIMINALOSITY

Ok, I felt an OT episode coming on, so for once I am doing the sensible thing and starting a new thread.

Oh goody, gleeful badness on a dark and stormy day.

I'm going to have to go with Earth Sea, just because I foolishly had hope for it, having loved the books since forever.

Every time they used someone's real name, I winced.

Every time there was another female wizard, I cringed.

Everytime someone kissed Sparrowhawk, my eyes rolled without any help from my brain.

I couldn't finish watching it.

Then I read what Ursula said about it, written in the air with a flamethrower, and I was at peace.

Next Please!

So true! My favorite King too, so doubly disappointing. I did kind of like the (obligatory King) Maine scenes. But ugh, was it Molly Ringwald playing the girl? Whiney? I just didn't see that coming. Liked Rob Lowe though, and the big towheaded guy playing moon moon moon. They were good and good together. The evil was flat and it wrecked it. Flagg never made me want to run from the room. There could have been scarier crows for heaven's sake. The Nebraska evil in the corn scenes were...they looked like they were filmed on Mr Rodger's backlot.

Yup, not so hot.

Taken

granted I never watched it to the very end, so maybe I can't really write it off as being "the worst" but I was excited about it. What could go wrong? It had Eric Close, Julie Benz... plus others I can't remember right now. It was produced by Steven Spielberg! It was part X Files, part Dark Skies.

Turns out, the fact that it resembled a show like Dark Skies only hurt it. I found it to be slow and more than a little bit dull.

Now The 4400, which Joel Gretsch starred in after, is a hell of a lot better

Oooh Taken, that was unfortunate. Loved the little blonde girl though. I didn't watch my pick to the end either...just...too...horrid.

I have watched some of 4400, I get all boggy in it, though I liked the eps with Summer, and I like some of the regular characters.

Worst ever? The Day After Tomorrow...easy...hands down. Jason Robards, world gets all nukified, lame-ass melty flesh types, "nuclear everything bad" message. Lame, plodding, dated (even at the time!), overhyped, and WAY overpreachy! 'Nuff said.

There was a miniseries entitled The Day After Tomorrow? And it was also about worldwide destruction? What a coincidence...

The Day After was wonderfully done. Sorry that you didn't find the picture of slow, agonizing, painful death after a nuclear war to be a smiley, happy good time for all.

It was movies such at The Day After that helped bring Ronald Raygun under control and help end the madness of the arms race.

I enjoyed the vast wave of horrified reaction from the people who still believed the 'duck and cover' theory of survival when this mini was shown. And yeah, Star Wars got shut down partly because of it, so I vote big thumbs up on this one, though I squirmed quite a lot at the 'bleeding from every orifice' costumes and props, and sometimes I thought it got a bit maudlin.

Wow...way to take a worst mini-series thread and turn it into a weak-ass lefty rant. OK, you didn't like the fact that Reagan brought the country out of the Carter-Era malaise. Fine. You want to delude yourself into believing that an agressive stance and the policy of MAD didn't keep us safe and out of major conflict for decades. Fine. You want to pretend like the arms race didn't accelerate the bankrupting and economic collapse of a broken system like communism. Fine. But to claim that the folks of Lawrence, KS had a pivotal role in ending the horrors of nuclear proliferation and that the mini-series was well done...that's just utter nonsense. It was a preachy waste of a talent like Jason Robards. You want a hard core no-nukes movie? My money goes on Dr. Strangelove. By the by...don't recall the point of this thread being "which mini-series did you not find to be a smiley, happy good time for all." Don't know where the hell that came from...sure know I didn't say it. In the future, please try to keep your posts on topic and keep the punditry for the real world thread. Cheers...

Still disagreeing on the talents and merits of "The Day After". Some cable station showed it last month and I watched for about 45 minutes before I remembered that I was channel surfing to figure out where HBO was. (Dog ate the channel list).

Even 20 years later, it is a great movie and the only irritating moment is the man who keeps asking the radio "Who pre-empted? Who started this?" The point of the story is, "it doesn't matter who starts it 'cause we're all gonna die if it happens".

BTW, I was at the time of the airing of that mini-series at home on leave from my Air Base in England which was a first strike target. I was an F-111 mechanic with the 'wartime additional duty' of personnel shelter manager and exposure control monitor. Exposure control as in ... how much radiation have you already taken and how much longer can you stay out before your eyeballs turn to slush.

I voted for Raygun, twice. I bought into the whole lie of mutual destruction being a deterrent. This world came too close to destruction too many times for my comfort level. Still does worry me and it will until we stamp out nuclear weapons completely.

As for worst mini-series, most suck so much I can't chose.

Also, wasn't Ged supposed to be his real name, that no one knew? I may be mistaken, but I swear I remembre it this way. Everyone in the series was calling him by his true name.

Touche Knibblet...and by the way, thanks for your service. From one vet to another. On the merits of the show...can we at least agree that it wasn't as good as "Lonesome Dove"? I mean, come on...work with me here! As far as MAD working or not...Although rather inelegant, I have to assume there was something more than high moral standards that prevented the Evil Empire from using their nukes. I mean after all they did gas Grozny on an unprecedented scale, showing a willingness to use WMDs in conflict. Also, most definitely agree on the "most mini-series suck" point.

Cheers...

Thanks back atcha. Being a mechanic was fun - it was my lowest ASVAB score so I figured they might as well teach me something I didn't know already. LOL What did you do?

I can't attest to the superiority of 'Lonesome Dove' as I haven't seen it. Yeah, I know. I'm a heathen.

Anyways, I still can't think of many mini-series that I truly enjoyed. 'Roots' of course. Other than that ... not so much. I'm enjoying the hell out of 'Rome' but I don't think that qualifies as a mini-series. 12 hours total, isn't it? I'll take an order of Pullo and some Marc Antony on the side.

Most television sucks and mini-series are only regular tv on steroids.

oh why do I bother turning it on? I could just go paint my toenails or something.

I promise to survive any digs or injuries.

OHHHHH! I just remembered the worst mini-series of all time. "Lace" was some horrid sudser about spoiled rich girls at a Swiss boarding school and one gets knocked up and gives up the baby for adoption.

18 years later, the little brat hunts down all the women to find out which one of them squeezed her out and poluted the planet's gene pool.

It goes downhill from there. What a dog of a movie.

V caused two of the most intense nightmares I've ever had. Now, my mom had just died and I was home for the funeral when I saw it so, that might have something to do with it but I can't attest to it.

I'm at my grandparent's house and experience a dream where the V aliens are climbing over the garage and coming in the window of my bedroom.

I got up out of bed and went into my grandparent's room. I woke them up and told them they had to get out! They're telling me, "Sweetie, you're asleep. Honey, you're dreaming." I'm not listening.

Picture it, I'm desperate. The aliens are coming to kill my grandparents and they won't evacuate. ARGH!

I go over and yank the covers off them as I scream, "You have to get the **ck out of here! I'll hold them off as long as I can!!!!"

My grandfather shook me and said, "You're dreaming! Go back to bed." I went back to bed thinking it was all a dream.

Next morning, I'm pouring milk into my cheerios when my grandmother said, "I didn't know you knew such language, Barbara Dawn."

My grandfather said, "We do appreciate that you would sacrifice yourself to save us. Exactly who were you saving us from?"

mortified doesn't even cover it

A week later, I'm back in England.

My boyfriend was a security police dog handler. My roommate was a insomniac snack fiend. Add these two elements together and you have the boyfriend patrolling through our dorm at midnight finding my roommie buying a snickers bar from the machine.

He comes up to give me a midnight kiss. What he doesn't know is I'm having a dream where the V aliens have me strapped down and an alien wearing his face is interrogating me. "Tell me, Barbara. Where is the safehouse? You love me, don't you? Tell me." kind of stuff.

He touches me and whispers "Barbara" and I - sound asleep - open my eyes to find the V alien standing over me.

I nailed him for all I was worth. BAM!

It was only the pain in my fist that told me that I'd really hit him and !!!! holy frak !!!! "Clyde!"

I yanked the covers over my head and rolled up into a ball as Chris's huge german shepherd attacked. He yanked Clyde off of me and dragged the beast out into the hall.

Roommate missed the whole thing. Should have known right then that the relationship was doomed. LOL!

V might not have been high art but it did a number on me at a vulnerable time in my life.

OK, Knib...wow. Just...wow! I think a show qualifies as good if it can cause you to assault a cop and fend off his K9. Cheers to ya'! The part where the girl gave birth to the V-alien-baby in her dream did a number on my psyche...but nothing like that! Have you watched V since? I have a hard time watching it now due to the cheese factor of the effects, coupled with the fact that everytime I see Marc Singer shoot an alien I expect to see a couple of ferrets emerge on his shoulder ala Beastmaster. Kinda ruins it, ya know?

Now those are nasty dreams! I've had bad dreams from scary movies, but yours win the all time prize, and probably had everyone else thinking you were over the edge and gone. I'll bet you were jolted by it some in your daylight hours too, the way nightmares sometimes creep in to get you when you're awake.

For me, V was awful, and irresistable at the same time, like an old horror movie! Good catch, I had totally forgotten that one. Lace I don't remember at all, are you sure tht wasn't a Swiss mini-series? Ha.

Just think, there's never been a Bruce Campbell mini-series.

How do we manage to continue to get sucked into these things when almost all of them are really bad?

Ok, well I admit to liking some of Into the West, but it tried too hard for 'get out your hankie' like only Spielberg does. It was almost like he was channeling Ken Burns when he made it.

I'm not so sure about the 'fending off' Clyde part. I was more in the fetal position praying I hadn't knocked Chris unconcious.
As it was by the time he got up off the floor and got Clyde off the bed, I needed a new comforter.
Just lucky it was January in an uninsulated barracks in England. Cold kept me alive. If I hadn't have had a couple of layers of blankets, I'd be sporting some scars to this day.

As I said, my mom had just died and I was slightly unhinged to begin with. hmmmmm, I'm still slightly unhinged better not risk seeing V again.

FINN MAC CUMHAL

Was Earthsea a miniseries, because that stunk.

I don’t watch miniseries’ (miniserii?), particularly if they're bad.

A few that I have watched are:

V was spectacular, but the subsequent series was a disappointment; it seemed so forced.

The Day After was good. It was so traumatic that I think it might have helped fuel my current career.

But my current fascination is Rome on HBO. That is really the only thing I’m watching on TV right now. That may be more of series then a miniseries, I don’t know how its categorized. I really like its frank portrayal of Roman life and politics, although I could do without the artistic license in historical matters.

What if Joss did a mini-series? Wouldn't that be something? I think we'd probably all explode from joy, and it would probably be a dang good mini as well!

FINN: Earthsea was indeed a mini, my pick for worst ever.
I had completely forgotten that V the scary turned into V the really lame show.

Didn't anyone else despise Merlin as much as I? I kept forgetting my VCR was programmed to record it and I growled at it on the tape without watching it several times. In fact, one evening I got Merlin instead of Farscape (because the tape ran out) and I was extremely annoyed. Blueck! Merlin!
