Compile a list of the ideal ingredients for the greatest science fiction or fantasy show that never was but may one day be!

One ingredient per post:

1. Has good dialogue! Either something that sounds like real people might say it, or something that has a bit of poetry to it; a bit of sparkle. One of the common trip-ups in the genre is that heavy concepts need to be explained and quite often unkskilled scribes will slip into expositives. Also, I don't mean to generalise, but it is something of a fringe group that is interested in genre stuff, and perhaps the witers are not terribly acquainted with the intricacies of interaction?

To see No. 1 in action, check out Firefly and New Battlestar Galactica.

CYBERSNARK

An environment (sets, costumes, props, etc) that seems like a real world, populated by real people.

Stuff gets left around, moved, dirty, broken and repaired. Any item of technology probably has an analogue made by a different company, so don't panic if our communicators/blasters/scanners/tools don't all look alike. People will tinker and customize, and paint flowers on the wall to brighten up the crew mess. Clothes are off the rack (even if the rack is a couple of planets over), food comes from the market, and spare parts are sometimes unavailable. Note that the presence of replicators on capital-sized ships of the line does not automatically dismiss these concerns for anyone not a part of the fleet.

Planets have more than one environment, species have more than one religion, more than one language, and eat more than one kind of food. Aliens have their own music, their own art, their own architecture, and their own fiction.

The universe has not been waiting for humanity to appear and save the day. They've been getting along quite well without us, thank you. Alien politics, culture, and technology are not dependent on the presence or absence of humans.

IKRIT

Some measure of realism:
Does not mean 2001:Space odyssey type silent flying/stuff, but something like B5:
The physics of spaceflight are correct (firefly has this too), the weapons are plausible (not death-rays, but superheated gas), and having the less-shiny parts of the station/ship/universe exist.
(Brown Sector, everything in Serenity/Firefly, NOTHING from Star Trek.)
Also: Aliens are allowed, unlike Firefly.

STAKETHELURK

Complex, compelling, and sympathetic characters. They’re the heart of all fiction and they’re what separates the real gems from the mediocre. They should be believable, understandable, and emotionally resonant. They should have intricate, multifaceted motivations, relationships, and histories. They should change and grow and learn and die, just like real people.

Villains should be as complex as protagonists and they should present a valid (if incorrect or deeply misguided) point of view--they shouldn’t “just” be evil. Conflict should occur not only between villains and protagonists, but between protagonists themselves. And conflict should inflict both physical and psychological wounds on both protagonists and antagonists. This increases our emotional investment in their struggle and adds to the realism of the universe mentioned by CyberSnark.

NEZZERUS

At least try to explain the technolgy put in it.

I hate not knowing how the Death Star works, from the superlaser to the ?engines? If you can't explain it using our technology, invent stuff, and explain how it works. For example: Saturnian fuel. Made from gas mined in the rings of Saturn. Powerful enough to make traveling between planets practical (not taking years)

ROCKET333

Hey I made a tv show that I think is pretty cool. Iv'e been making it up most of my life. I wonder if anybody would be interested in reading some of the stuff I wrote. I have notebooks and computer disks full of stuff. In fact it's real funny becasue after I started watching firefly I was like there are some similarities in the. Of course not real simialr but I swear to god I have been making it up since I was alittle kid.

I would really like for people to read my stuff and be entertained. THats my goal for now...well actually I really always thought I would make a crazy tv show. I got sidetracked when I wanted to be a rockstar.

aAllright you guys I suck. I'm all excited now just talking about my tv show I hope you guys don't mind me blabbing on. Anyway I tried very hard to make it realistic yet fantastic you know. Still I am a twenty seven year old "girl" who is a town freak in a town full of drug addicts. I live in my moms basement so It might not be perfect. But I really am trying to logistic it out. I mean I need other writers I guess to devolop someof the other charecters.

So like I made a organization in the future that is called the underground and they are mostly fighter pilots. Except that alot of the stuff that happens is like here now.we always wondered why we could never get to the other side of space untill a portal opened up right next to earth. And lo and behold there were all kind of planets with portals and alot of the species of people were simialer to us...had simialr languges and diffrent things. I would explain this more in detail...anyway they drink beer and go to shows and well there ships are all customized. ITs too hard to explain there is too much.

That's alright- we've got all the time in the world!

This show of yours; try and sum up what makes it different from the rest in one sentence, then go from there.

okay. What makes it diffrent is that it is pretty much all the stuff you guys have listed on here. Attention to detail. And I push the envelope. Because that we have a confused view of what is right and wrong in the world. Plus I have alot of demographicis in there. And instaed of two sides there are alot of sides. Much like the world today. Sorry that's more than one sentence...Plus it's fun. And goes from one extreme to the other, and everbody could get into it becasuse you could easily put yourself in there.

ROCKET333

Here is a short summary of the show...God it is real hard like squishing a basketball into a snake hole.

THe six main charecters are fighter piolts in an organization called the underground. THey fly fighter jets. Sometimes they fly in the atmosphere and sometimes in space. If they are in space it is tricky because space is so big. Sometimes they have to find each other and there enemies. You hear them go Marco Polo or Knock Knock who's there alot. Once in a while they will even have to land on the ground so they have to know how to use guns just in case. They refer to ground troops as feet...However most combat in this universe is done in the air. If they have to go far they will go on a transport. Ships cost alot of money to run.

The underground is it's own orgainization that is not affliated with any planets, yet works for them in exchange for money, weapons, even military people. There is alot more to the whole mission thing that I won't get into. They do not wear uniforms most of the time. THey have capes. Usually you will see the leaders were capes all the time.

THe base they live on is called Douglas front. There are two types of bases in the underground, An area which is more secluded, and a front. THey have air shows and things of that nature. THere is a city nearby...you get the drift

Douglas front is divided into four sides, North South East and West. THe Northside is up in the hills somewhere. OUr charecters "Lightning Force" live on the Eastside. THerfore they are in the middle. Westside is of a less caliber, and southside is of a higher caliber. Even though alot of people really don't care, some of the pilots are competitive. THey even have hand signs...MY show is a little ghettoy

THey do wear flight suits which would be reminescent of dirt bike or bmx riders.

Basicially the underground has bases all through the known univerese. All vections of space can be diffrent, some are like earth and some are real viloent, some are peaceful, some are wierd.

SPace travel is better, ships are run on diffrent sources. THe underground ussually uses a power source simialr to magnets.

Natrually you are thinkng, well, How the hell do we Terrens get off Earth and find life on other planets. Simialr to our own at that? I tried to solve this question and dabbled with a few things...I came up with, a portal opened up outside next to Earth. And we found out that the not all, but many of the cultures, language and etnicicites we have on earth came from other planets, Even some of the tale and foklore wa repeated. the big question mark is how the hell did we get here on terria like this...well mabye through the show we'll figure out more about earth, but earth is not really the center of the show it just exists. ANd like here on earth there are alot of thelogical and evelotional questions that noone really knows the awnswer to.

In my show, the fighters pilots can be anywhere from little kids to one hundered something. THey can be showy and cocky or not...and then of course there are all the other people that live on the base...

Hey if anybody wants to read a few of the things I wrote than just go to spoiled ink. I am under the same screen name in there. THe stuff I put on there is just a few things. I have more. I didn't really explain stuff to the T but you will get a genaral picture of the main charecters. It would take me all day to explain it because I made it up since I was a little kid. It's real wierd it's like I will be driving down the street or in the supermarket and things will just come at me and it's very visual how I see it. Wirting something you see visually and have seen most of your life it gets difficult to explain it. THat's why it would be better as a tv show, although I have pondered comic books or just a book. SOrry I wrote so much I gotta stop.
