That's 'suggested interperative' sound layed in as a kindness for the non-Firefly fans, not literal recorded sound. If it were real sound, it would REALLY IRRITATE me too!
So I'm glad it's just 'suggested interperative' sound.

BTW, to the producers: there are no non-Firefly fans who watch your show; you can turn the 'suggested interperative' felgercarb off in future eps.

That referrs to the sound no one could possibly record or hear in space, since space is nuthin' and therefore cannot transmit sound, which we all know is merely vibrations in solids, gasses or liquid.

Any of such sounds are a suggested interpretation of the sounds as they would sound in an atmo, or gaseous environment, although actually happening in the vaccum of space.

Nice room! Just thought I would quickly throw this in here!

When I 1st saw the mini-series, and there was a scene where a cylon raider fired a missile at Colonial One, and Apollo flew ahead of it and let the missile track him, and then he flipped around and fired at the missile, I knew right there that that was correct physics I was seeing. That was the 1st time I ever seen real physics happening in a sci-fi movie with space fighters. It makes sense and it changes the whole dynamics, the concept of dog fighting.

Also, that scene where destroyed a Cylon fighters debris is raining on Starbuck’s viper. The fact that you can hear the noise of it hitting the viper must be because those cockpits might have oxygen in them, but then again that would defeat the idea that they have fully enclosed helmets, but the sound could be heard in the cockpit because of the air.

Could it be the sound heard is transmitted through the vented gases that those guns are throwing out ?

The same with any vent ?

Wouldn't a ship the mass of a Battlestar have enought gravity to hold those gas pockets close aboard even for a short time..... ?

If someone was floating in that pocket of gas, and the sound of the guns was transmitted through the now not vacuum discharge gases.... wouldn't you hear
the sound of the guns firing ?

If you like seeing real space flight physics, you need to see Babylon 5. Earth Alliance ships use "normal" physics, attitude jets, "coasting" without constant thrust, etc. A really nice example is in season 2, The Fall Of Night . B-5's fighters attack a ship (no spoiler info here), as they pass over it, they pivot nose down, firing straight down into it as they continued flying over it. I was watching it on tape the next day (it was 1995). I said HOLY SH... grabbed the remote and watched it four or five more times. The fighters also lauch straight out from the station's axis using centrifugal or centripetal force? (I can never remember which one it is). In space battles, you either see a first person view (inside the cockpit) where you only get the sounds of "your" fighter or you see the outside battle view with all the sounds you'd never be able to hear in space. B-5 is also a much better show, well worth seeing. Enjoy. Rob

I've watched the B5 2-hour premier movie and the first season on DVD this week. It's okay so far, but it is NOT better than Gallactica. At least, not yet.

My fellow MN Browncoat, Mario, is going to loan me all of them over the coming month so I can watch them all. I'm meeting him on Wednesday to swap season 1 for season 2.

Of course, my husband is picking up Diana Gabaldon's newest Outlander novel, "A Breath of Ash and Snow" for me at the library tonight so I might not be able to finish season 2 as quickly as I did season 1.

I'll keep you informed, Chrisisall, of my progress and my opinion of B5 as I go.

Yep, good ole classic cheese.

Here's the goofy part, airman of my vintage must have watched Galactica TOS, because we would use the 'purple and orange' squadrons to refer to other squadrons in our wing when we didn't want to actually name the squadron in question.

OMG, Cisall, how have you not seen B5??? You are normally well versed (Ha, a pun!) in SF. There must be some kind of agency you can apply to for assistance....

Put off Earth2 until after B5. In particular, seasons 1 & 5 are the worst, seasons 3 & 4 the best. My advice is skip all of the movies and the sequel series, Crusades. However, do start from the first episode with all due haste!!

Also, keep in mind that some of the acting and dialog are... well... not the best, especially in season one. Don't let that stop you.

We know that the Raptors at least do have oxygen pressurized cabins since whenever they get shot the air escapes and people are able to fly in them without wearing helmets. It would make sense for the Vipers to also have pressurized cabins for the comfort of the pilots. I'm thinking putting a vacuum filled cockpit next to vacuum filled space would get awful cold, and air is the easiest medium to act as an insulator and conductor from the space (heh) heater.

Pilot: noun, definition, one who takes perfectly good aircraft into the sky and returns them broken.

Knuckle Dragger: noun, definition, crew chief who can "fill 'er up", wash the exterior and polish the canopy.

Specialist: noun, definition, member of an elite team of aircraft technicians who fix what pilots break and turn aircraft back over to the care of 'knuckle draggers' who will "fill 'er up".

I was Environmental Control Systems. Heating, air conditioning, pressurization, equipment cooling, etc. Life support picked up where we left off.

It took me two weeks to figure out that pilots weren't really having difficulties getting their anti-g suit hoses to lock into our sockets ... the problem was that I was a 22 year old blonde, 38-26-38, who wore V-neck shirts and would have to bend over the side of the cockpit to "fix" their hose. When I switched to crew necks, the problem cured itself.

When I got to my next base, the Air Force (in its great wisdom) merged us with electrics. It would have made more sense to merge us with hydraulics, but that would have made more sense; ergo, abohorent to Air Force leadership.

Depending upon how old you are, it could be before you were born.

Back when the Earth was flat, you could wear V-necks with fatigues. Now this was back when we actually had fatigues and not fancy dancy BDU's.

I feel we must be fair to those who preceded Battlestar and even Firefly.

On Babylon 5, the Earth Fighters used real physics, and they rocked. Probably the best space fighter design I've ever seen, at least from a maneuverability standpoint.

I've got a general question. After hearing all the buzz here about Battlestar, I decided to check it out. I log on to Netflix, and sign up to get the first disc of season 1. What arrived was Disc 2. I put it in, and the first words I hear are "Previously on Battlestar Galactica. . ." Needless to say, I instantly hit the 'stop' button.

Am I missing something crazy here? According to everything I can find, the episode that's playing is the first one in the series - but why is it on disc 2, and why does it start out with "Previously. . ."

Am I supposed to have checked out the miniseries first for this all to make sense? And what's on the first disc?

Also, should I watch what I've got, or order the miniseries before I get back to this episode?

Any help/clarification would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Keep on flyin'
