Me and NanoMoose kind of started this conversation on the screen names thread. http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19353
The name NanoMoose made me think of the works of Jhonen Vasquez and we kind of hijacked the thread.

In order to be polite, we thought we would start a thread for it.

So if you are a fan of Zim or JTHM or anything by Jhonen, we welcome you here. Please post often. WE would love to meet more Firefly/Zim fans.

I kind of liked it when I was 5.

Here I am, in all my geeky glory. Now where were we?

Ah yes. I haven't read some of the Johnny spin-offs, or the BAC. It's hard getting a hold of them when your state only has two comic shops. My favourite Johnny is No. 6, though.

Did you read my other post about the differences between the Firefly fandom and the Zim one?

"Dance with us GIR! Dance with us into oblivion!"

If I had kids, I wouldn't let them watch Zim. It's too dark and twisted. But that's the very reason I love the show so much.

JTHM is also an amazing comic. My friend showed me the trade paperback and I read it all, start to finish, in one night. Really funny, really cool art, just like Zim. A little more horrible, delicious violence, though.

Squee!

Jhonen is known for that, and yeah, it is a little too screwed up for Nickelodean. Seriously, I don't know why they were so surprised when it turned out the way it did. Even Squee (which was the comic they picked up that made them talk to Jhonen) has a lot of the weird. It's just a little bit...happier.

I love the art so much. For some reason I've started imitating Johnny's pose when he announces that he's exploded his spine. He throws his arms straight up the air and looks quite adorable, for a murderer.

another friend of mine showed me this DVD with some cool music videos on it. One video was really funny and twisted, had some cashier guy going crazy and hurting people. really cartoony, but with live actors. lo and behold, when I checked the credits, Jhonen Vasquez was the director. I couldn't for the life of me remember what video it was, though.

My sister is a crazy fan of that. It's from a band called Mindless Self Indulgence. The song is called "Shut Me Up".

YES! thank you! I knew I had heard of the band, but I was havin' a mental block of sorts. now that it's gone, i can focus my mental powers on more important matters . . . uhh . . . hrm . . . uh, it's funny when GIR eats tacos . . . (swish!)

It certainly is. It's also funny when Zim goes off into a shrieking rant, when Dib tries to play lookit-me-I'm-a-paranormal-investigator and fails utterly miserably, when the Tallest hate Zim and say so, and when Ms. Bitters is creepy beyond all reasoning.

Also, when things explode for no reason. I have very uncomplicated tastes.

I was a big fan of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac back in the day (heck, I'm wearing the ol' JTHM t-shirt right now), but I could never get into Zim. It was a good show, I just didn't have the time.

But I remember when it was announced - I didn't believe it at first. I thought it was a hoax. I couldn't fathom putting a show on a kiddie's network by the same guy who drew those delightful pseudo-philosophic comics about a dude who tortured people to death in his basement.

Fruit's Oaty Bar! Is a person from the mouse! Fruit's Oaty Bar! Makes your bust from yours female shirt! Continuously eats them! Let them cause you to be surprised!

Me and my sister were at a hotel when we first saw it. I believe our reaction was "...Whoa." It's amazing how un-Nick it is, really. And then we found Johnny and our 'whoa' became a 'Christ'. Jhonen is the anti-Nick. I'm honestly amazed it ever got on the air.

But I'm glad it did, if only for a season and a half. It started going downhill before the end, though.

I haven't read JTHM in a while so I'm not sure which issues are which. But I have to say one of the best parts is the bit where he ties a guy up and makes him test the food in his fridge. "Is this milk still good?!?!??!" It was...unexpected.

I also always loved the meanwhiles. Espescially the ones involving Jhonen. Superpowered battle with the convenience store clerk who is really Satan! Brilliant!

And did you know that Jhonen has said that he would really have liked to make JTHM into a show. He was smart enough to know that no studio would go for it so you get Zim. Still hilarious, but toned down somewhat.

And I have one word to say on the subject of Zim episodes.
Pusstulio! (probably spelled wrong)

For Zim in general, I have two words.
GIR! and Gaz!

GIR is so stupid it's amazing but he is just the funniest thing. And he has a pig and a moose, and and...I don't know. He just rocks! And Gaz, come on! She's about the smartest character in the show. Plus, she's a hard core gamer. Being a gamer girl myself, I like seeing gamer characters that are not geeky guys ages 13-40. Not that there's anything wrong with that. They're just not the only gamers in the world.

Also, if you haven't read the BAC, don't. As Jhonen himself has said, it makes you retarted, severely retarded.

Gaz is indeed cool as hell. her invoking of diabolical curses using only her rage is a little frightening to me, even though it's only a cartoon.

and Gaz vs. Iggins(sp?) . . . 'nuff said.

I haven't seen the Pustulio episode, but I saw something just as disgusting - Career Day. With the moult. That part is etched upon my nightmares.

And AGH! I can't believe I forgot the Jhonen tale! "Gasp! Those aliens are stealing the Pope!" Really, you know you've reached the pinnacle of human development when you've read that sentence.

I've tried to imagine a JtHM show...it usually ends up entirely in black and white (it would just work that way) and very, very spooky. And he actually said that? Wow. Although, he is notorious for undercutting his fans.

GIR has been claimed as one of the most brilliant cartoon creations in the history of animation. I'm not sure about that - he's cute and funny, but you get all these people who only love it for him. And I prefer Zim, myself, Horvitz did such a great job with his voice. He goes from sounding insane to adorable back to insane and then really scary. And then he reveals his incompetence and you're no longer afraid of him.

I like Gaz - although I was sad that in her big episode, Zim made not one appearance. It was fun watching her pwn Iggens though. You know what's funny? Jhonen tried to kill Iggens so many times, and yet Nick wouldn't let him because think of the children. And then when he comes back at the end of the episode, I was even more disturbed than I would have been if he'd kicked it. What IS this kid?

Actually, what Jhonen said about the BAC is that it made him severely retarded when he was making it. I think it's in one of the Filler Bunny intros.

By the by, did you notice that Filler Bunny is in an ep of Zim. Someone (probably Miss Bitters, I can't recall) sets a jar with him floating in it in the window. A ball then flies in and smashes it. In the remains of the jar, Filler Bunny's lil head just kind of slides off. You know, I really feel sorry for that poor bunny sometimes. I think he's one of the most disturbing things that Mr. Vaquez has ever created. He exists in constant agony for your amusement and and his greates wish is to die and so escape form his never ending torment.

Ah Vasquez! I own everything he's done that I'm aware of. JTHM ...Brilliant. SQUEE! , 3 filler bunnies, the BAC and a little something called "Everything can be beaten". I read about ZIM, but had no Nick, I do have the DVDs.
I've stolen the following from around the Net:

I think one of my favourite characters of his is Wobbley Headed Bob. He's so much fun.
well, off to game slave 2

Did you know that when I first heard the title "Everything Can Be Beaten", I thought it was some kind of weird self-help thing Jhonen had done.

How silly I was. Jhonen would never do anything to help people.

Have you seen the comic he did for that Free Comic Day? I think it's called The Ghost with Ink-Stained Fingers, but I'm not sure. It's very odd, but beautiful in a weird way. It's only four pages, I believe.

hahah, I loved that show when it was on. Twisted, but Gir was, and still is, one of the funniest cartoon characters I've seen. I like his little voice, and when he does his demonic giggle.

"Everything Can be Beaten"?
I've never heard of theat. What is it? While I am ashamed to have missed something Jhonen did, I am also delighted to find something new to me.

And by the way, best exchange in Pustulio.
Zim: GIR! Why is there BACON in the soap?!?!!
GIR: I made it myself!

And another favorite episode was GIR Goes Crazy and Stuff mostly because of the squid guy. "Please, take me back to the SEA!"

Everything Can Be Beaten is a tiny little booklet which on the front says 'by scolex and scrambly'
Inside it says (complete with backwards 'e's) 'based on a completely fabricated true story' writing and layout by - Mr. Chancre Scolex (in the host body of Jhnen Vasquez)
Paintings by - Mr. Crab Scrambly (in the host body of BRACAN)

first published August 2002

It's about a 'person' in a mask who's spent his entire life in a small room with a hammer smashing kittens as they come down a chute. he discovers a door and follows it to the 'outside' world where he finds lots of other things that can also be beaten.
