The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

For all us UK viewers, I thought here would be a good place to discuss your thoughts on the new series (which started yesterday)

Spoilers are hidden at the minute, but this being a thread for UK viewers, you can be sure that one or two may slip out every now and again, so US viewers be aware.

First of all then, what did you all think to "New Earth"?

Although I felt it wasn't "fantastic", I rather enjoyed it. I also liked the fact that Russell T Davies was not content to feature a simple A-B plot for the first episode.
There was quite a lot going on that it could have been a two-part episode.

First, you'd assume it was about the sisterhood and their miraculous cure, but then Cassandra took over Rose's body. So there was that to deal with. Not only that, but then it turned into an episode of Doctor Who Vs Zombies.
Not only was there the return of Cassandra, but the also face of Boa who, to be fair didn't feature much, did hint at a future reunion. Maybe all will be revealed by the end of the series 2.

Lastly, Billie Piper really stole the show with her performance

playing Cassandra.

David Tennant hasn't grabbed me as much as Chris Eccleston had in his opening scene in "Rose", but I'm confidant he'll have won me over in no time.
The scene in which he was

possessed by Cassandra

was hilarious though

Bring on the next episode!

Hey Needy,

I saw New Earth last night too (I live in the North East of England) and loved every second of it. I'm very interested in seeing how Tennant progresses as the Doctor - I loved him in the Christmas Invasion, but that was a taste of things to come that New Earth didn't quite explore (though I did like his almost 'action hero' handling of the situation, particularly

I'm sure we'll see some great stuff next week in Tooth & Claw. "Bullets can't stop it!"

As for Billie - she owned the episode as far as I'm concerned. I remember when she was announced way back before the new season 1 and I wasn't totally convinced (I'm old/young enough to remember her days as a pop starlet, our UK, much-less-trashy version of Britney Spears - since she didn't go all out withthe school uniform in her first video). Throughout series 1 she impressed, but last night she blew me away - the girl's got a comic ability I'd never have expected.

So I'll be glued rigidly to my TV screen next week, and likely every week after.

Really enjoyed the episode (which is surprising as I usually intensely dislike the Russell T Davies written episodes) though I thought the ending let it down, it just didn't seem to make any sense. Also, was very typical of the new Who with it's deux-ex like endings.

If they could cure EVERY disease, why did they need to keep the zombies in the first place? I could understand keeping them infected with diseases they hadn't cured for testing, but keeping them infected with every disease they had cured seemed weird.

For the millions of diseases that exist, there sure were only a few packs needed.

How could a solution designed to be taken IV cure people by just being applied to the skin?

By combining the liquids you'd get something completely different which wouldn't cure anything.

How did the cure get passed along? When they touched the infected, surely they'd just get re-infected not pass on the cure?

If RTD would put some work into fleshing out the plots of his episodes he'd be do much better as a writer. As it is, I still feel he'd be better running the show but letting other people write the episodes.

Needy - I liked the ep but disliked the things you liked about it (though not about Billie, I thought she was great).

I think that there was too much going on in the episode for a season opener. I wasn't sure which storyline I was supposed to be paying most attention too. Far too much crammed in.

Loved David Tennant, such infectious, genuine enthusiasm which I never felt with CE.

When I think of an interesting signature you'll be the first to know.

WHOOPS

I missed the last 10 or so minutes of the first episode because of work but from the bit i saw Billie Piper is a good character. Plus the episode was really good i just wished it was on earlier.

As for the David Tennant i will have to watch more episodes to decide if he was as good or better than the other guy.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the Doctor's "action hero" scene. I really liked that too

Also, regarding your first reaction to hearing Billie was cast, I didn't know what to make of it.
I know a lot cringed at the thought of the former pop star acting (yes I remember her music too, my sister had her albums and I believe I used to like some of her stuff too *shame*), but I also heard that she was in Canterbury Tales and had pleasantly surprised many by her acting abilities, so I held off judgment.

Now it's hard to imagine the show without her

I can understand where you're coming from, and I thought that too, but I just shrugged it off. Maybe I shouldn't, but I just figured its a show about adventure and fun, not about heavy science, so I try not to let it bother me.

Same applies to the ending. I know the episode wasn't perfect, but I was entertained on the whole.

ITs funny, I thought the same thing about the first episode of Alias Season 5. I hated that episode because of how much plot it crammed in, and how it shamelessly wasted what could have been an emotional story.
I didn't think that with this though. I guess it is all to do with one's opinion, but it kept me on my toes - to have him just dealing with the Sisterhood would have been dull (IMO) - the Rose subplot added a lot of humour (And a superb kissing scene) and then jsut as the sisterhood were threatening to become another lame villain, the zombies turn up and kill them.
I liked it.

Sing with me Needy...

"Why ya gotta play that song so loud? Because we want to...because we want to."

Ah, such humble Billie beginnings - she even survived Chris Evans (to our American friends, NOT the guy from Fantastic Four - I don't know who the American equivalent would be - our Evans was a ginger-haired radio and TV personality - I'm guessing maybe Howard Stern for similarities, but with less appeal?). Now she's basically the queen of Saturday night prime time.

Another reason for my love of the new Doctor Who is the fact that we Brits are finally starting to get back into the genre filmmaking arena - for years we had Hammer Horror, stuff like Quatermass etc and alongside Dr Who had a relatively decent output of horror/sci-fi, but in more recent years the focus shifted and all we seemed to do was naff comedy and poor Mockney gangster stuff. Now the new 'Who' is starting to reignite a lot of the love of genre that I always felt was dwindling a lot on our little island. Of course, we had the American shows (and I dont begin to compare Dr. Who to the likes of Star Trek, Buffy, and of course my beloved Firefly) - but I like the fact we're starting to throw our hats in the ring again. There's always room for mor horror and sci-fi on our meagre selection of TV stations and its about time us genre fans were rewarded more (come on, do we REALLY need so many series of 'Footballers Wives' - for our American cousins, a VERY low-rent, trashy and generally abysmal Dallas-meets-Dynasty-meets-The OC but with more skanks and less making of sense).

So the more 'Who' and it's ilk, the better!

Funny thing about Billie's pop career.

Her career started in the UK before Britney arrived, and when Britney hit our charts she was described as the "US Billie".

Then Billie went away for a bit, as all popstars do, and when she returned with a new album she was hailed as the "UK's Britney Spears".

True story. And frelling stupid of the media, as usual.

Oh, and loved the ep. Fun, and a bit silly, and great with the Cassandra impersonations

Oh Hammer… What I wouldn’t give to see a REAL version of Dracula again..

But I digress.

Its worth pointing out that Billy didn’t start out as a musician (and I use the term loosely, sorry I‘ll try and repress a muso rant) she started out as an actress. She did an advert for a pop magazine where she played the part of a pop star, and some genius thought “hmmm, maybe life should imitate fiction”.

Yeah, I vaguely remember that, plus in all of her interviews she always at pains to remind people that acting was her first love.

Yeah, when I first heared abvout the casting I was dubious, but I didn't care 'cause one of my favorite brit actors was playing the Doc (Chris). Funny how now shes making his absence bearable...

No, I thought the episode was brilliant. We laughed, we jumped, we made chav jokes, and were totally out done by their own,we cheered, at one point we crossed our legs and sucked air in through our teeth in pained empathy

Select to view spoiler:

yup, the zip thingying scene - David Tennant, Balls of Solid Asbestos.

My biggest problems with it were the faint wiff of tritenes. Clone zombies cured with a shower and a hug?
Last time there was an armie of the half dead ill people advancing on Dr Who et al, it was solved just as quickly, but in a manner that did make sense, it had that ring of authenticity to it (i'm referring to the medical nano thingies in the 1st season WW2 eps.)

And in my mind the whole time was, its Doctor who, bog it down with absolute scientific authenticity and it looses some of what makes it Who.

But now I cant help thinking, yeah, these are all really talented writers, they've proved that they can relsove issues in satisfying and credulous ways, so shouldn't we be expecting more from them? (especially seeing as they are one of our brightest hopes for encouraging decent telly.)

But no, on the whole, I loved it, It didn't feel quite like a season opener should, but Tennant and Piper were superb, it was funny and action packed and that bit

I think it also needs to be said here that this is an early evening show targeted at family viewing (ie can be shown to relatively small children.) That alone means that nothing worse than hide-behind-the-sofa scary is ever going to be shown and while that doesn't nescessarily mean a happy ending evry week, shower-and-a-hug is likely to be a good resolution for the age range.

I really liked DT, a bit more rambling and talkative then the moody Dr. no.9 but with flashes of 'im a 900 year immortal just shut up and listen' that spiced his performance up no end.

As other people have said Ms Piper was very good throught.

The ending was a bit trite and Dr Who like .. but then this IS Doctor Who so I dont really see a problem ;]

The visuals were a lot better then the season opener last year, on a par with 'the end of the world' which is nice to see. Lets hope thay keep things going. Back in victoriana next episode for some kick ass monk action and warewolves, I for one can't wait.

Also the beeb is reporting 8 million viewers, making it the top program on Sat night, and probably all weekend.

I liked it, yes the ending was the usual cliche type thing, but thats the charm it still holds.

I think Tennant will do a good job, i really have faith in him to do what Chris never gave himself a chance to do.

The acting was great, Billie was fantastic as Rose and Cassandra. Especially after she sees her again;

Select to view spoiler:

Rose: "But thats... Cassandra"
Cassandra: "Peekaboo"
Rose: "But i saw you die"
Cassandra: "That part of me was taken from the front, this part however, was taken from the back"
Rose: "Ahhh, so your talkin' outa your ars..."

And the disinfection scene was great.

TALK POWDER, Anyone?

Billie, ohhh yes, Billie. I also remember her pop career, im her age so when that was all around, i heard it all, my little cousin had her songs on 'Cassette'.

Speaking of Chris Evans, that ginger dig in the xmas invasion had me in stitches.

The Doc: "How do i look? Am i sexy? One thing... Am.. i.. ginger?"
Rose: "No"
The Doc: "Ahhhh, why couldnt i have been ginger, ive always wanted to be ginger."

I cant wait for School Reunion. I just like the idea of catching up with his past, very interesting.

I actually wrote a fanfic about the 11th doctor (Whos looks and characteristics i based upon a very young Timothy Dalton with long hair ) meeting up with a much older Mel (Bonnie Langford) when he, alone, lands the tardis in 2012. He lands just the see a certain event in an area of scotland. After wandering around for a bit, taking in the sights, and, in a wierd mirror of School Reunions trailer, Mel follows him and confronts him at an castle ruin in scotland. She basically shouts "DOCTOR" over the length of a twenty foot castle wall.

He turns around, brushes his hair out his face and looks at her. "It is you" she says to him, "Youre the doctor."
"Mel?" he replies. "How did you know who i was, ive changed a lot since you left, four times in actual fact. How did you know?"
"Only you would park a bright blue police box on the edge of a cliff in scotland and hope it would go un-noticed" she replies.

Haven't read all the other posts in detail yet, but although I thought the script was very good,& very funny, I think the story let it down. It all felt a little childish to me and the ending was a bit of a stinker.
One more point, those effects at the beginning were laughable, yet the effects in next weeks show look quite impressive.....?
Tennant's good enough as the new doctor, I just hope the storylines don't descend into kids TV territory.

Here's hoping that the reason for it is they're saving money for a special effects filled blockbuster season finale

I gather you mean the future earth with all the flying cars etc? You gotta remember Dr Who has not got the budget or time to create LOTR or Star Wars quality CGI. It takes alot of man hours to create 'none' CGI looking graphics. it's done very well in Firefly by pulling the focus and 'shaky' cam however as you know there is not that many CGI sfx in Firefly (Pilot and Train Job have probably used the most out of the whole series) and we all know that does not matter 1 bit or effect the extremly high standard.

What I'm getting at is, that such a simple and short piece of CGI (ie the future Earth sequence) could look so poor, yet next weeks Ep has the most complex & impressive CGI I think I've yet seen in a BBC production. Doesn't make sense.
I found no reason to complain about 'any' of the effects in series 1. I've never expected Zoic quality effects from the BBC, and I thought the effects from all of the 1st series were good to very good, just that 1st sequence I think was very bad. I can imagine an American audience, used to BSG etc, scoffing at that. Infact the 1st series is not doing well over there as it is, I think it's only getting around 1.5 millions viewers now

Enjoying the new series too, though have missed some epsoodes from the first series.

I don't mind Miss Piper as Rose, but I feel that there needs to be another companion. It erks me that Rose can do no wrong and is so clever. It's just a little fustrating. Can't understand why they left Captain Jack behind. He could keep up with the Doctor scienctifly most of the time, plus he didn't mind fighting every once in a while, (and he was charming, something CE wasn't). Billie can't really pull off the one-liners all the time.

along with pics from the episode {one great one of the aformentioned boe hehe} and a few spoiler pics from the next eppy "tooth and claw" David tennant is growing on me, not as quiclkly as DE did as a Doctor, but he is getting there. Was kinda disturbing they referred to the Doctor as the lonely god. But the bad wolf scenario for this season is at least out of the bag :

He teleports away promising that he and the doctor shall meet for a third time, the last time where the truth shall be told. His teleporting was green like the inside of the tardis too curious curious.
all in all the eppy was not a dissapointment at all.

It's the only show, since Firefly, that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when the theme tune kicks in. The neighbours must hate me when Dr Who is on as I tend to jack the volume up on my surround sound system. Also like Firefly, I hate to see the end of the episode.

Torchwood is the coolest thing: Laser telescope to giant energy weapon!

Also, Mickey, our favourite cockney techno-genius, mentioned seeing something on the Torchwood satellites.

Lastly:

UK: Spooks, Life On Mars, Doctor Who, Hustle.

US: 24, Lost, Firefly, BtVS.

The BBC need a bigger budget.

One fat man in space: A problem.
Two fat men in space: A big problem.
Five fat men in space: A larger problem than ever anticipated.
Ten fat men in space: A satellite.

Oops, my bad!

As you can tell, I'm not a huge Dr Who fan, hence my non-geekiness when it comes to the details... but I do think it's highly enjoyable entertainment.

I'm glad you've got my back so I don't make too man mistakes

Oh and I'm so annoyed that I missed "Tooth and Claw" not once, but twice.
Fortunately, a friend has it on tape and says I can borrow it.
I can't wait till the next episode though - not because of the reunion with old characters - but because of Anthony Head being in it!

Wow. Just wow.

"School Reunion" was everything Dr Who should be.
It had a great villain with a tempting offer for the doctor, it had dialogue as witty as anything Joss Whedon has to offer, and it had an emotional climax.
As much as I loved the season one finale "The Parting of the Ways", "School Reunion" is now my favourite

I was looking forward to it due to Anthony Head's appearance as the villain of the story, but the episode itself delivered by the bucketload.
David Tennant is obviously very comfortable in his role as the doctor by now, and his performance with Anthony Head during their first confrontation by the pool was electric.

I wouldn't consider myself a big enough Dr Who fan to buy the dvds, but I'm going to have to buy this one when it comes out, either as an individual release or, if the rest of the season is this good, the box set

Yep 'School Reunion' was outstanding. I loved the bitchiness with Rose and Sarah Jane. It made me laugh LOL. Sarah Jane Smith still looks damned hot :). Mickey Smith is now part of the Drs team much to Rose's dismay. Mickey is the tin dog LOL.

Yep Anthony Head was very cool. He plays a very good bad guy. David Tenant is very good (Rose and Sarah Jane talking about how the Dr strokes the Tardis and he then comes in and they are laughing so hard with eachother and the Dr is asking 'What?'. Fantastic scene that had me crying with laughter), Billie Piper is surprisingly good and they always have a really good supporting cast like Anthony Head, Simon Pegg and Zoe Wanamaker. I just wanna see Patrick Stewart in an episode now :)

ah yes, how could I forget about Mickey
I hope he sticks around with the Dr a bit, it's about time he joined the crew... even if it as the K9 of the group

And to think, where he first appeared in "Rose", I couldn't help but feel glad that he wasn't joining Rose and the Doctor - my how he's grown on me

I always felt sorry for Mickey. Rose is always leaving him. However we know now that Rose loves the Dr as Sarah Jane Smith did.

I believe the Cybermen will be appearing this season. I can't wait for that :) You know they are gonna be pretty nasty.

yeah I felt bad for Mickey too, but at least now he's not got any illusions that he and Rose are still an item (then again, I could be proven wrong in a few episodes time)

The Cybermen will be appearing in a couple of episodes time I think (might be a 2-parter).
Next week's has got Sophia Miles in it - she was in Underworld, Tristan and Isolde and is apparently David Tennant's current girlfriend

It’s a small thing but I absolutely loved the line “I am so old now and I used to have so much mercy” they really have to bring back The Master so he and DT can just talk at each other for 45 minutes!

Or

"You get one warning. That was it."

The Doctor has always had a way of defeating villains, but these last two have really brought out the "completely on it, not to be even slightly messed with, badass who really will slaughter you and all of yours without a second thought if you cross him" side.

DT does the snap from genial to killer so well, but you can't forget...

Americans. Do not look at this spoiler. I'm deadly serious.

Christopher Eccleston, alone, unarmed, and with Rose captured by an entire Dalek invasion fleet, coldly telling them what he's going to do, then what he's going to do to them. Believe it.

I couldn't agree more, I loved that scene!
As fun and adventurous the series is, its always scenes like that that stand out as favourites for me.

Regarding the spoiler - I'd forgotten about that. It's all come flooding back now.

And I want to see that episode again now!

I know what you mean.
Although I'm not a raving Dr Who fan meaning I'd have to buy all the dvds, there are some episodes I would like to watch again. I suppose I could just buy the individual releases
