Actually more than one, a variety of intertwined stories. I haven’t actually progressed any to the point of intertwinedness yet. I’ve hit a block in all but one of the ones that I’ve started, and to make matters worse what I have is in desperate need of rewriting.

I do plan to at least attempt publication if I ever finish. So that makes the state they are in now even more horrid.

The concept is good, everyone I’ve talked to agrees on that, now I just need to get the writing mirror that. I’d appreciate any help anyone is willing to give. The stories are what I guess would be called urban sci-fi, contemporary world, although at the edges of perceived reality, and, at points, sanity. No aliens. Just vampires and other like creatures, but a scientific view rather than a magic one.

What I’m asking for is basically readers, I need people to tell me exactly what they feel when they read it, what doesn’t make sense, what they want to know more about, where they think it sucks, what was good. All of that stuff.

If you’re willing to read something for me just say so, or send me an email cpw@maine.rr.com

I could also use a list of Fantasy/myth creatures, obviously I can come up with a few on my own, but many of the more obscure are lost on me. I really want to get stuff from real myth, D&D has made that harder, because you dismiss something like a weretiger as being something someone made up for the game, then find out it is from real myth. (Real myth = something from mythos which people believed at some point, thus the Iliad is real myth, John Carpenter’s Vampires is not.)

Also, if anyone can help me get things like how creatures associated with fantasy and myth could really exist. I’d appreciate that.
The only thing I’ve really got going is vampires, I’ve figured on the healing and infection. If anyone has a good explanation for dying in sunlight I’ll take it, mine’s a bit weak. Also if anyone knows of a chemical in wood which could be lethal to human-like biology…

I think you get the idea of what I’m going for.

My knowledge of atomic physics, and quantum mechanics is a bit weak as well, from that I need an explanation for things like telekinesis (On my own I’m looking at magnetics and photon/matter interaction).

Something to remember if you decide to help, really more than trying to explain something like telekinesis through physics, what I need is how physics would explain telekinesis were it proven to be real (there is a very real and important difference).

Right now it's in the state where someone reading it says "Not bad" in the same way that a parent calls a kids essay not bad, you know "Not bad considering...” I need it to be good, I hope for something better (You know "great" "amazing" "the greatest work of literature in history") but I’ll take good if I can get it.

Yup, I'm bumping this to the top, because I am evil, self serving, and most of all I don't think any one looks in this section, so I think it needs to be up top for someone to see it.

sounds interesting, I'll see what I can look up for you.

Not sure about other creatures, but I always thought vampires could exists as victims of a genetic changing virus. Causes genetic changes around the mouth area, new muscles, calcium growth, reliance on proteins found in blood plasma, extreme allergic reaction to ultraviolet light (done before I know but then you can use that as to why they don't have reflections maybe... the light in different wavelengths are absorbed instead of reflected... blah blah..)

Hope that helps.. if you want more ideas, just ask.

LOTV: Bleh..

Chris, just look up folklore. There are thousands of variations on vampires, monsters and the like. It seems every culture in the world has some, if not all. Makes you wonder if there is any validity to these things. Most likely not. But there is always a little truth in myths and legends.

This is not a challenge for debate. It's more of a joke. I know how you like to debate.

Anyway, here's a site I find useful to begin searching in folklore and myth.

www (dot) themystica (dot) com/mystica/info/index (dot) html

I didn't want to steal bandwith, so just replace the (dot)'s with a real .

Hope this helps. I have no idea how to explain a realistic way that folklore monsters could happen. I know, Radiation. Just foolin' with you. Seriously, Good luck. You've got your work cut out for you.

Ha, this is right up my alley. I'd love to read it. My email addy is no1getzs0da@yahoo.com. I'm a writer myself and need people to proof read my first novel, when I'm done with it. I don't have writers block at the moment. If you're looking for creatures, you can use these:

The names of the things are BELOW the picture, not above. I'll read yours if you'll agree to read mine when I finish?

Wow, people replied. Ok thanks for the help (those that helped), right now I’m experiencing some problems, I'll send out my stuff as soon as I can. (It might be a good idea to get your hopes down for this.)

By the way a genetic changing virus is a retrovirus, most are non harmful (not that I understand why) but some are, the most famous being HIV. Some scientists used one of these to create a monkey with a gene to glow green, much to everyone’s disappointment (well mine at least) the monkey did not glow. Next they have to figure out how to activate a gene.

I would be happy to be a "reader" too. I am trying to write something (a novel) right now myself but have run into a variety of troubles, the biggest one being a numbness in my left/dominant hand (I have Multiple Sclerosis and lost all feeling in my left arm a few months ago. I got feeling back in my arm but only a partial recovery in my hand. All my inspiration has been gone since then.)

I wish that my biggest problem was numbness. I have run out of inspiration in parts, have trouble writing the parts I've still got it for, and what I already have isn't really all that good.

On the brighter side, hopefully you guys can help me change that last bit. (If I manage to send it.)

My main characters are teens and I fear it is turning into dreaded "young adult" genre fiction.

Take my advice (which I learned the VERY hard way): be careful what you wish for. When I say I have numbness in my dominant hand that means that I have a VERY hard time using it (in other words, I can't write and have a very hard time doing a LOT of things that "normal" people can do with little to no effort and/or trouble). Trust me - having the numbness SUCKS. I DO realize that having no inspiration (or not being inspired) is bad, trust me (I write too). But - chances are you don't want to lose the ability to use of ANY parts of your body (particularly hands leg and feet).

Thank you. Sorry if I sounded a tad "uppity" before. It's just that having Multiple Sclerosis is a nightmare at times, and losing the use of my hand is probably one of THE worst things that has ever happened to me - really badly timed too! I had a great story idea (imo) and started writing it and then lost use of my writing hand.

Anyhoo, thanks again...

(Still want to help with reading what you are writing. I majored in writing in College, if that's any help.)

I had writers block for about a month on my first novella (only novella actually. I mainly write short stories) for about a month. I needed this girl to make up with her father who'd literly killed her boyfriend (not knowing he was) and I didn't know how to do it, so I asked a friend. She said "make a sandwich". I thought that was ridiculous, but ended up using it in a sort of way. So my advice, ask a friend.

Here's something from DNA that will help:

Also, write in drafts. Lots and lots of drafts. You correct it several times. Have parents, family, friends, teachers, smart people, dumb people, editors and so on proof read it to help with ideas.

Hmmm...actually, I've found that to be counter-productive. Instead, I would recommend that a couple of trusted individuals (who you respect as either a fellow writer or reader) be picked to read the work. A good writer needs very good readers, not necessarily a lot of readers. It's quality you're after, not quantity. Just my two cents.

TRAGICSTORY

Hi,
I just thought I would throw in my 2 cents on your vampire dieing in sunlight. Real myth does not have vampires dieing in sunlight. The first occurance of this is in the 1917 german film "Nosferatu." Previously to that in stories such as "dracula" "Camille" and the original "Vampyr" vampires could walk around in the sun light with no problems. To get a good idea on the "real myth rules" of vampires I suggest reading Dracula as Van Helsing gives a quick run down after Lucy's death.

If you need a reason for vampires to die in sunlight try hypervitamintosis. Overdosing on vitamin D which humans synthesis through sunlight. Though technically hypervitaminosis is a skeletal contition caused by the excess vitamin A, you can fudge it abit.

Finally a cool myth/ledgend is one from Brasil. Supposedly there is a giant (man sized or larger)sloth that lives off of palm hearts. (the soft inside of palm trees) and it opens the tree up by sticking its large claws in the tree and twisting. (think snapping someones neck from behind) and of course it defends it food from humans by opening them up the same way.

"Societies are supported by human activity, therefore they are constantly threatened by the human facts of self-intrest and stupidity." --Peter Berger

Thanks for the information.

On the off chance anyone still wants to help me with it, my computer things are still not going well, and when I do get everything in order everyone who has said they would read for me will get an email asking if they still want to, after which I'll send it out the "yes"s.
