I saw it for the first time last night, I got the Quadrilogy a while ago but only just got round to watching this.
Man, it was bad!
What was Joss's role in this? It said writer in the credits, but surely he wasn't responsible for the plot?! I would have thought Joss would have been able to write a great movie given the Alien franchise. And the special effects - I couldn't keep a straight face when the man-alien-baby thing started treating Ripley like a mother. It was ridiculous!
It could have been so much better - it would have been cool if they had had a set number of Aliens (which would have been possible given the space-station confines) and made a big deal of the humans taking down one Alien at a time.
The best part was the underwater sequence - I got uncomfortable watching it, trying to think about holding my breath.
Anyone have any opinions on the film? Or some info on the extent of Joss's ,ahem, responsibilty for it?
PS. I see AvP 2 is on the way...

Anything cool in it (The Betty, her badass crew, Ripley's 'tude, aliens using each other to escape) was Joss.
Seriously, I think he did the very best he could with the set-up he had to work with...
The series stops for me with Aliens, though.

And AVP was entertaining nonsense, that's all.

Believe it or not Chrisisall

I didn't mind A4 for exactly the reasons Chris mentioned.

What didn't put it on par with 1&2 is the man-alien-baby thingy, like SerenityinScotland said.

All in all, I didn't mind it. My movie likablity chart for Aliens goes like this.

#2, #1, #4, , , , #3.

I've always felt that any Space movie/series brings something, no matter how bad it is. Like Concept, characters, setting, spaceships or bad guys. A4 had 4 out of those 5. But the Bad guy was almost enough to ruin it entirely.

Actually, that part was like an effed-up nightmare. It made me squirm, all EEEEwwww and such (Knowing Joss' work now, I would have expected it).

I did like that she finally got home, though.

Well, sort of her Chrisisall

Ranks way up there with the Magog from Andromeda eh?

Ranks... that was the right word to use too.

I liked that she got home too. I'd be curious to see what adventure home holds for a 100+ year old, kinda Ripley.

Any Firefly fan who hasn't given A4 a fresh look isn't getting is money's worth from Joss. The crew of the Betty is clearly the archetype for our Big Damned Heroes, and we've got, in essence, variants of the Alliance military, the Blue Sun Corp, and, hey, isn't that Earth-That-Was at the end?!?

Joss's longer script for A4 is out there if you do an internet search or two. The crew of the Betty is slightly larger and there are a few extra action sequences, but I don't remember the other major changes.

The Betty was definitely a high point in the film. Ron Pearlman makes a great mercenary.

Did anyone else notice the resemblence of the Betty to the Copperhead from Final Fantasy: The Spirits within?

The crew formula could be compared to the crew of the Valkyrie of Titan AE, Toombs crew from Chronicles of Riddick as well as The Betty, Millenium Falcon and of course Serenity.

The "crew formula" is actually pretty danged close between The Betty and Serenity:

Elgyn: The captain, a rugged, amoral--yet funny--guy (Mal), who happens to be married to the pilot (Zoe).

Christie: Big, bad, and loyal to the captain (Zoe), but with a girl's name (Jayne).

Call: Bright young girl who is one of the ship's mechanics (Kaylee--full name is Annalee Call, not dissimilar from Kaylee Frye), and most recent addition to the crew who is hiding secrets (River).

Jonher: Big nasty, rude, crude merc (do I even need to say it?).

Hillard: Expert pilot, who is married to another member of the crew (Wash).

Vriess: Aging wheelchair-bound mechanic (no direct analog, but his relationship with Johner mirror's that of Wash's with Jayne).

Sure, there's no analog at all for Book, Inara, or Simon, but I think it's very clear that these guys were the "rough draft" for our heroes.

I agree that there is a certain similarity to the crew from the crew from Titan AE (ANOTHER Whedon crew), and also, for that matter, to the folks from Atlantis (and check out who helped on that script...).
