For everything Final Fantasy, especially the games since Advent Children has its own thread already.

Regardin the best game, I am limiting my list to games I've played (VI - X-2 and Tactics). In my opinion the best FF games of all time are as follows:

1. a TIE between FFVI and FFVII. VI is pretty commonly regarded as the best RPG game ever made and VII brought Final Fantasy and RPG's in general into the new generation of systems. They were both equally monumental achievements for their time. Plus, they have the two greatest villains in video game history, huzzah for Sephiroth and Kefka!

2. Final Fantasy VIII. OK, I'm really biased because VIII was the first FF game I ever owned and played so it holds a special place in my heart. Squall Leonhart is my favorite video game character of all time. There is nothing about this game I don't like.

3. Final Fantasy IX. CHARMING. This was Square's thank-you to all the people who have been with Final Fantasy since the beginning. It's just a brilliant, light-hearted, and fun game even though the story by the end is as dark as any video game I have ever played.

4. Final Fantasy Tactics. Damn, damn good.

5. Final Fantasy X. Tidus was a bit annoying to me at first but I got used to him. Fun game, I love it and have played through it to 100% several times but its at the bottom for me because it was fairly linear, not all that difficult, and a bit shorter than I would have liked.

I hear more often that Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made, and I tend to agree ;p (though I seriously have a huge soft spot in my heart for Earthbound)

Best for me, hmmm...

FF VII (note, i started the series on VI)
FF X and FF VI tie
FF Tactics
FF IV
FF IX
FF V
FF VIII

Alright, don't think I've missed any that I've played. I really liked Squall from FF VIII, but I don't think I cared much for too much else in that game. Maybe I'll give it a run through again sometime now that I'm older. I want to play FF X-2 sometime along with the other ones I've missed.

VII
VIII
Tactics
X
IX
VI
V
I don't remember much about the others.
The ONLY problem I had with VIII was the DRAW spell thing. interesting concept, worked well... if the result of each attempt had been 10X the actual result, it wouldn't have sucked.

Dirge of Cerebus soon! Yay Vincent!
and XII returns to the world of Tactics. political intrique.
and the few screen shots I've seen for XIII (PS3) look amazing. Not that XII doesn't.

Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to XII and XIII. XII has a good team behind it. The DRAW thing bothered me a bit. I really should go back and give it a go, though (if i ever find time, eesh)

I'm very interested in Dirge of Cerebus, revisiting the world of VII. different style of game, but the familiar world and people. Should be fun.

Found this funny FF7 parody on YouTube from Robot Chicken on Cartoon Network.

My favorites:

Final Fantasy X: This still remains my favorite. To me, it has the strongest plot line out of all the games.

Final Fantasy VII: Since this was one of the first FF games I played, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Sephiroth has to be the best villian in Final Fantasy history.

Final Fantasy VIII: I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of this one at first. In my impressionable youth, I didn't know that FF games weren't in linear order, so I expected this to be a sequel to VII. Silly me. Once got over my naivety, it became one of my favorites.

Final Fantasy IX: The only reason this is at the bottom of the list is because I haven't finished it yet. My brother took it with him when he moved, and I haven't had the chance to get a new copy. What I have played, I really enjoyed.

Chrono Trigger was pretty awesome. Only got to play about half of it in college because one of my roommates had it. Once the school year ended, I could not play anymore. I did find an emulator for it on my computer, but it never ran correctly. 2x

Very true about Chrono Trigger and I probably have to agree with that too. Also I hear what you're saying about Earthbound, I love it, it's one of the best games most of us will never play.

A hint about VIII, since people tend to complain about the draw system. Always ALWAYS junction your magic stat as high as it will go and equip as many magic+ abilities for all of discs 1 and 2 and most of 3 (or until your magic stat is around 130 or higher). Higher magic = better draws. About halfway through disc 1 each character will be drawing the max of 9 spells per draw, greatly decreasing the time it takes to get all three party members 100 of each type of magic. Also, make sure you get 100 of every spell because then you became uber quite quickly.

Does Kingdom Hearts count at all? That rates pretty high on my list. Any game where you can fight with Jack Skellington and Jack Sparrow would have to kick ass.

Ah, you must play it, haha. I have a working emulator and rom for it (own the game as well). It's good stuff.

So true about Earthbound being a great game most of us will never play. I hope Mother 3 makes its way over here to the US.

Well, here's my list from the FFVII:AC thread, and I stand by my placement for FFVII, if anything, I rated it too high.

For anyone here that hasn't played any of the Final Fantasy series, you are doing yourselves a disservice. FF has run the gammut of systems, having titles on NES, SNES, Game Boy, GB Advance, DS, Game Cube, PS1, PS2 and the PC. Must plays out there (in this order):

FF VI (III in the US) on SNES
FF IV (II in the US) on SNES
FF VIII on PS1
FF Tactics on PS1
FF X on PS2
FF I on GBA (major improvements over the original and PS1 editions)
FF VII on PS1
FF Mystic Quest on SNES
FF Adventure on GB (remade as Sword of Mana on GBA)
FF II on GBA
FF X-2 on PS2
FF Crystal Chronicals on Game Cube
FF IX on PS1
FF V on PS1
FF Legend Trilogy on GB

And for those that are wondering, FF III was never released in the US.

Chrono Trigger was a great game, and let's not forget Secret of Mana. Earthbound was good, but Earthbound Zero was much better (too bad it was only in ROM form)

In a recent report by the FDA, Final Fantasy has been scientifically proven to be as addictive, if not more addictive, than herion. The Surgeon General warns parents that they must begin discussions at an early age about how to resist the temtations of this game, and the inevatible peer pressure to play the game, lest they suffer terminal incompatibility with the opposite sex, countless nights of sleeplessness, long periods witout the will or desire to eat, dehydration, loss of all social networking capabilities, and in extreme cases very eccentric behavior, such as the desire some players have expressed to dress up like a woman and sing karaokee after playing FFX2. The surgeon also warns us in these dark times that this scourge must be stopped and that we cannot allow Final Fantasy into our minds and corrupt our youth. If everyone were to become a dork, who will be left to propagate the race?

YES! SoM is probably my favorite game of all time. Me and two friends have spent countless hours in my basement playing that game since we were 12 or 13.

And don't forget Seiken Densetsu 3 (basically Secret of Mana 2 never released in the US. You can get a SNES emulator to play it).

SoM was great, for sure. I've still yet to play Earthbound Zero...maybe I'll get the time someday. Still in hope for a release of Mother 3 here in the US.

I've read arguments for and against VII and completely understand the reasoning behind both camps' arguments. I can't exactly put my finger on why I loved it so much, though. The game just had "it," for lack of a better term.
