=============================================
I've always been a fan of firefly and all, but I bow to the strength of fandom in the browncoats. So when I came across the following, I thought they should be the first to know. Is scifi to change into another spiketv or tnt?

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/8/prweb427756.htm

Effective November 1, 2006, the SCI FI Channel will change their name to SurgeTV, to reflect the changing demographic thrust of the successful long-running cable channel. In addition, deals are currently working out to bring back ECW for a three-times a week run in prime time, as well as reruns (Pre-WWE) of professional wrestling events.

(PRWEB) August 24, 2006 -- Effective November 1, 2006, the SCI FI Channel will change their name to SurgeTV, to reflect the changing demographic thrust of the successful long-running cable channel. In addition, deals are currently working out to bring back ECW for a three-times a week run in prime time, as well as reruns (Pre-WWE) of professional wrestling events.

SurgeTV hopes to tap into the newfound audience of science fiction wrestling fans, by promoting cross-over programming, including Eureka's Colin Ferguson's guest appearance in the ECW ring, and Season 2 of Stan Lee's Who Wants To Be A Superhero to include ring matches between competitors. Saucier, racier stories will be aired after the midnight hour, and in a change for the popular channel, may include R-rated material.

While much of the original programming the SCI FI Channel has produced will remain on air through the next year, SurgeTV expects sweeping changes to the network, shifting away from the so-called "nerd" demographic. This means that SurgeTV will try to appeal to it's growing number of "extreme" viewers by removing all of it's current re-run programming and replacing it with a new "brand" - Xtreme Surge At Night. Effective November 1, 2006, SurgeTV will begin broadcasting reruns of Hogan Knows Best and original WWE programming. Filling out the early morning hours will be the ground-breaking American (English language channel) debut of Lucha Libre sporting events.

SurgeTV will continue publishing Sci Fi magazine, which will remain uneffected by the format changes taking place on air.

SurgeTV is a television network where extreme action can be found. SurgeTV fuels the adrenaline of viewers with original series and events, blockbuster movies and classic wrestling programming, as well as a dynamic Web site ( www.scifi.com) and magazine. Launched in 1992, and currently in 85 million homes, SurgeTV is a network of NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies.

No, it's not bad. That pissed me off too. I have always loved SciFi! And now they insult me?!??

And what do they think they are doing? They're not even making a gradual change along a demographic line. Thier just making a random leap (probably off of a cliff) And there is no other channel that will fill its gap for me. I love watching thier old reruns. You can't find them elsewhere. Some may be on DVD but I don't have the money for all of them.

And why? WHY?!?!??!!! I thought their rating and veiwership were going up lately? They've certainly become more visible in the last 5 years. Was I mistaken?

Please, please tell me this is some kind of horrid joke.

It should piss you off, but less for the "nerd' (since we all know there is nothing wrong with being a nerd or a geek) and more for the fact that these people assume that America is full of Jerry Springer WWF lovin' I don't know which of the 16 men is my baby daddy idiots.

The ONLY way to change the tide of dumbing down American TV is to make a concerted effort to contact the advertisers on these shows and stations. Let them know en masse that until the programming they sponsor improves, we the "nerds" of America will not be buying their products.

I just sent this letter to Bonnie Hammer, President of Programming at SciFi Channel. I would hope other will as well.

------------------------------

Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 08:43:44 -0700 (PDT)
From: "Maura ******" <mavourneen1200@yahoo.com> Add to Address Book Add Mobile Alert
Subject: SciFi to SurgeTV
To: feedback@scifi.com

To : President of Programming, SciFi Channel Bonnie Hammer,

Dear Madam,

I have just learned, with much dismay, that your channel is moving away from it's "Nerd Demographic" as the press release so kindly called me, to "Surge TV."

I have watched your channel since its inception. I actively watch the Stargate shows, Eureka, Firefly (when it is re-run) and other older programming like Dead Like Me. I was truly hoping your channel would branch out into new programming - like Eureka. Or more seasons of Firefly. Your channel could have been the darling of the Internet had you chosen to order a new season of Firefly.

From PRWeb.com's press release:

--------------------

Once again, television is degrading to appealing to the lowest common denominator. I am ashamed that you and your staff would conceive this as a good idea. How embarrassing. Pray tell...Just how many "Sci Fi wrestling fans" are there? 100? 500?

I have DirecTv, and I know how to use my thumbs down button. However...I believe my disgust with this programming change will lead me to block your channel altogether.

I expect a personal response from you, Ms. Hammer. I am a very unhappy current customer of yours, and feel as the President you should be aware of this complaint.

Unhappily,

Maura F

EMBERS

thank you Mavoureen for the e-mail address at Sci-fi, I have sent the following letter to them:

Quote:

Dear Sir or Madam:
I have always made it a point to get 'expanded basic' cable just so that I could have the Sci-fi channel. I have always loved the programming you have brought to me (I particularly love your new show 'EUReKA'). However the name change (SURGE? What is that about?) and your new 'mission' to bring even more lame programming to cable (I think Fox and SpikeTV already have the wrestling demographic covered) makes me rethink the extra cost of cable.

If you stop carrying the Sci-fi shows I love, I will be canceling cable (and I'll make sure the cable company knows that it is your change of programming that motivated the change).

I hope you will reconsider, cheap lame programming may seem like financial sense to you, but it is very short sighted.

Sincerely,

Guessing this is a hoax, as pretty much anyone can post a PR release on PRWeb. Just sign up and post - plus it's aimed at smaller businesses, not larger concerns. Can't find anything else about this anywhere else.

And being discussed on the Sci Fi boards as well:

Dinalt, you may be right about this being a hoax, this was briefly on Whedonesque, but it's pulled now.

My guess is it's a hoax. I just saw a press release the other day on SyFyPortal saying that SciFi had bought the rights to show Star Trek: Enterprise. So.. I think their scifi nerd programming will still be intact. Thank goodness, since I'm a scifi nerd demographic member and damn proud of it!

The uproar if they go all wrestling would be too big I think, although they are sure testing the waters so to speak to see how many viewers wrestling can bring in. I might get flamed for saying this and it's not because I hate wrestling, I'm just not a fan. But I hadn't noticed the wrestling demographic and the scifi demographic being linked before. Seems a bit at odds to me.

What the special hell does Sci Fi think kept their collective asses afloat as long as they have been but the same demographic they are now turning their back on.

All those offended by this, should be. What about sci fi programming? I guess they will turn their back on that too? They might keep BSG because it brings in the ratings, but what of other shows & movies?

It is kinda sad though; I don't want to live in a world where something like this is realistic enough to be taken seriously.

I mean, we should be able to trust that no network could possibly be stupid enough to try this, but the evidence. . . isn't encouraging.

How much does a network owner make, anyway? And how much would it take to get Joss interested?

I mean, we should be able to trust that no network could possibly be stupid enough to try this, but the evidence. . . isn't encouraging.

How much does a network owner make, anyway? And how much would it take to get Joss interested?

Given the Sci Fi channels recent track record, it isn't surprising that some took it seriously.
But I agree with you, it's a sad world when this sort of thing can be taken seriously. Kudos though to anyone who wrote to the Sci Fi channel and made their views known.
Problem is, with their cancellation of SG-1 etc., this could have been real (and that's scary in itself).

Maybe it'll serve as a warning shot to Sci Fi anyway - we want decent shows. Not wrestling and the like (sorry to any wrestling fans, lol).
But a Sci Fi channel should really show just that - Sci Fi. Soon as they start watering the mix with 'other' shows, it kind of loses its purpose.

Sigh.

And a deeper sigh.

If this was true, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. There isn't hardly a day that I don't flip into some inane SciFi channel rip-off of a B-movie that was a rip-off of some other B-movie, with special effects that many high schoolers could beat with their home computers. Or flip into ECW (which I pronounce "eew"!). At these points, I turn to my husband, sigh, and say "Bonnie Hammer must die" (ok, I'm kidding, but the anger is there..), or "I WANT MY JOSS-TV!!!"

Seriously, the SciFi channel is getting further and further away from what "true" science fiction is all about. Personally, I'd rather see good classic SciFi, new series that challenge our intelligence instead of pandering to pre-pubescent teenagers (actually, most of them can't stand this stuff either, so who is watching it?), reruns of great series (of course, number 1 would be Firefly), and a nice smattering of factual science shows (think best of Discovery), and some science/entertainment/technology news and talk shows! (G4 without the snark and more brains).

Take us seriously! We are a larger economic force than most are aware of (and I hope to prove that in my doctoral dissertation!) There are a lot of seriously bright people in fandom, who are capable of doing market research and reading a balance sheet, who have experience in media production and best of all...ACTUALLY HAVE A FRELLING CLUE ABOUT SCIENCE FICTION FANS BEYOND WHAT THEY'VE SEEN IN STEREOTYPICAL MEDIA PORTRAYALS!!!

Ok. I'm praying to all the collective Gods of geekdom that this is a joke. But I'm all too aware that it could be for real at any time.

Time to take action to get what we want.

Go read "The Long Tail" by Kevin Anderson, and anything by Henry Jenkins. We DO matter. Time to take matters into our own hands. It can be done and IS being done, slowly, experimentally, but "programming on demand" even to a full "network" level (and that whole model will change, I believe) is happening and technology will only encourage an exponential increase in that change.

Enough. D*C's in less than a week, and I'm gonna go put in my Firefly soundtrack and get happy...

Have you seen Alien Planet? It's this mockumentary about the first robotic probes sent to an inhabited alien planet, with actual physicists and zoologists analyzing the animals and plants they "find."

Discovery keeps re-running it, and I keep thinking it'd make for a great series, either a year-long exploratory mission, or as a pilot for something featuring the BIG SPOILERS we find at the end).

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Thank the gods this was a joke.

Of course it was believable, given that Sci Fi is now home to a wrestling program, they are axing SG1, and some of their other programming choices have been less than.....inspired.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if this did come to pass. That is truly the sad thing.

Yes! Exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking of. Even fun stuff like "Mythbusters", things that require you to THINK CRITICALLY! Ok, so fun fantasy movies don't necessarily require a lot of thought, but we all know how much analysis fans put into things like "the physics of Star Wars" -- a nice balance of fantasy and a *plausible* science/physics/biology system (even if it's not our own) makes for a much richer experience than watching horribly bad green-screen filmed bugs (blown up to house size, so they really, really look bad resolution-wise) chomping down on teenagers and turning them into little maggot repositories (as in the amazingly bad SciFi channel film I flipped into the other night).

Oh yeah, a little less horror, and a lot more heart and brains would be nice on my dream channel as well. I'm sick of all the zombies!!!

Okay, so maybe our complaints/fear aren't that far off. What's on sci fi this monday??? RAW. what the hell??? Maybe our complaints are that far off.

Personally I'm going to use the information previously in the thread to pass along my disappointment. Even my wife, who isnt a sci-fi fan, thinks that this is a crock. We need to let those in charge.
