So I rented Silent Hill last night. I am a bit confused by a few points, so maybe someone can help me.

Select to view spoiler:

1. The ending. Does this mean that Rose and Sharon are dead? Are they stuck in an alternate dimension/reality?

2. The police detective with the burned hands, is he stuck in some alternate reality too? Is that why he did not age after 30 years?

Overall, though, I thought the movie was pretty good. I never played the games but I could follow pretty well (aside from the couple of points above). It is definitely creepy and scary. Generally I do not go for horror types of movies, especially ones with gratuitous gore where people are just getting ripped apart for the sake of blood on screen. Silent Hill was plenty gory (actually, VERY gory) but it never seemed particularly pointlessly gory. Some parts, though, were (for me) a little hard to watch.

Select to view spoiler:

Like when Officer Bennett gets burned alive. That was upsetting but more from the standpoint that I was sorry her character was killed. Or when that poor lady gets skinned alive like a kid tearing into a present on Christmas morning. That was upsetting because it was....... well, it was gross.

The visuals were pretty fantastic. The sirens warning of the approaching darkness, the fire pit, the "Welcome to Silent Hill" sign. Quite good.

I rate the movie a 7/10. Enjoyable, great visuals and effects and not bad acting to boot. Got me freaked a little bit, which is fun sometimes and kind of the point of these kinds of movies. I had a little trouble sleeping last night.

Anyone else have thoughts they would like to share?

I assume that you never played the original Silent Hill or Silent Hill 2, as elements from both were present.

Select to view spoiler:

They weren't dead, but stuck in an alternate dimension as you guessed. In the game (you were a man by the way, and the daughter's name was Cheryl, not Sharron) , the 'good' ending meant you save Cybil (the cop) and that Cheryl's soul became whole and you lived relatively happily ever after (until of course the 3rd game where you play as Cheryl and the main character from the first is murdered in his sleep). The movie decided to take a different route in that when the soul's two halves (Sharron and the 'Demon") were reunited, Rose and Sharron couldn't leave the alternate reality. They decided to go darker so as to avoid the 'happy' ending everyone was expecting. As far as the cop, all I can say is that Silent Hill effects people in different ways, some people go mad, others become monsters. Maybe his was he'd live until the horror came to an end. But I wondered that myself.

Hope that helps

Cool. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the info, especially about the game. So in your opinion, was the movie fairly faithful the movie (aside from the obvious gender change)?

I enjoy movies made from games if they are done well but having never played the game, obviously I cannot make that comparison.

By the way:

Select to view spoiler:

Having Rose and Sharon stuck in an alternate dimension kind of puts them off limits for any kind of sequel, huh?

Something that just occurred to me. The mother and daughter are Rose and Sharon. It reminds of the character Rosasharon (sp?) in The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Of course, there is no connection.

It was reletively faithful, I felt alot of the elements were well done and explained the idea behind them more than the game (i.e. the sirens and the change from darkness to light). As far as your question:

Select to view spoiler:

It's possible to do a sequel because the 2nd game didn't have any of the same characters as the first. It was an independant story closely tied with the first. The major difference in the movie (aside from the gender change and some other elements of Rose's character) is the whole underground fire thing. That happened in an American city years ago and the writer used it because he felt it would make the movie more believable. You never know what really happened to Silent Hill in the original game. It's all sort of hinted at. Whether Rose or Sharron will be in it, who knows?

The sirens were a neat idea. That was in the game too, right? At first, I could not figure out what in the world was going on.

I thought it was an odd movie with moments of suspense and terror. I enjoyed it, but did not really understand everything that happened...I also did not play the games. I'd see it again...kind of a good popcorn movie for the home theater.

I would have enjoyed said movie a lot more if the hundans in front of me weren't interrupting every five minutes. And to make matters worse, they brought two kids (the oldest not more than four) into a horror film. How idiotic can people get?

On the other hand, I did enjoy the film. I have to get around to playing the games though; It'll probably help me to understand things more.

I've never played the game. I did enjoy the movie up until the end...

Select to view spoiler:

I just couldn't stand watching the hero cop get burned to death. Personally I think they just went too far on that one.

Also I didn't like the part were the cult leader woman had the barb wire go up between her legs and rip her apart. Sorry just too close to rape for me to be cool with it on any level. I don't care how evil she is rape is NOT acceptable

Other then the points in the spoiler region I really liked the movie. But those two points basically ruined the movie for me. Having said that, the visuals were amazing in this movie, sort of like watching a nightmare. I also really enjoyed the fact that you actually got to see the creatures. In so many movies they put tons of money into creatures but you never get a good look at them.

Here's something for all you would be Silent Hill fans. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/561292.html This is a link to a game site which has a ton of information on the games. To be exact, part 3, which is the only one in the series I have played. Since this game is a direct sequel to the first it contains a lot of great plot points and background information with regards to the movie.

If you are simply looking for some background go down to the in depth FAQ section and click one of the plot analyses. Be warned they are quite long and very detailed. Also if you are looking to actually play the games and don't want to spoil anything I would not recommend checking these out. For everyone else, enjoy!
