I've been taping Dark Angel on Sci-fi for weeks and I was planning on continuing tonight,
but they are doing a marathon today instead,
and I can't tell if they are repeating shows I've already recorded or if they are continuing from where they left off...
Oh I should have expected this of them (sci-fi always jumped around a lot with their airings of Firefly too)
sigh

can anyone help me?

Why don't you just check the schedule on scifi.com? Or have you been taping them without watching them?

When in doubt, tape 'em all and sort it out later. Better to have 'em and not need 'em, than need 'em and not have 'em, I always say.

got it and all set to tape!
This is starting my 6th tape of Dark Angel
and tomorrow I'll still be working on my 3rd tape of Dead Like Me (tomorrow they rerun Jewell Stait's episode),
I'm grateful to Sci-fi for rerunning these great series.
Eventually I'll buy them all on DVD,
but I still have to buy the rest of 'Angel'.

thanks again Ecgordon!

Angel's coming out with the 'slim sets' in November, much less expensive.

I remember in 2001 being angry that 'some show' named 'Angel' was on, stealing half the name of my favourite series! How dare they name their character 'Angel'? Did they do it to confuse peeps? Catch some ratings from the terminally confused? Is that some dumb Buffy slayer thing? Angel's a girls name, anyway...

even earlier than that since 'Angel' was an established character on Buffy from it's first season (1997)

But I get it, Chrisisall, you feel that your favorite series isn't getting the attention it deserves and then gets ripped off, or is apparently ripped off....

It is the way I continue to feel about Firefly,
why hasn't it caught on more? Why didn't Serenity make a bigger impression? How is it that people haven't recognized this incredible show?

Ashamed to admit that I don't know for sure, but I think Logan recited some poem in one ep that might have contained the phrase. It comes mostly from Cameron's fascination with 'Battle Angel', or so I've read.
And now he's doing a live action version of that.

Seriously?
The same reason it took this current war so long to become unpopular; peeps take a long time to discover the truth of things.
Remember The Prisoner? It was on PBS first, then when it developed it's following after a few years, it went to regular TV, all cut to shreds for commercials. But at least it WENT mainstream, and was pretty widely liked.

It gets worse; there's an actual manga series called Dark Angel. Looks to be about some kinda spy or something (I've seen the books, but haven't actually picked them up).

Technically it was Max reciting the poem that Logan had written for/about her. It was fairly early; that's when she realized that they were falling for one another.

Ironically enough, Lucretia's already (kinda) taken: Lucretia Noin was on Gundam Wing (yes, an Italian woman on a Japanese show, and who dresses like a cowgirl [sadly, of the non-brown-coated variety] in her spare time). One of the only two female characters of any real significance, and (IMHO) a better pilot than any of the Gundam boys (they were all flying mobile suits that were effectively invincible, and each of them was still shot down [gundam destroyed or rendered inoperable] at least once. She was flying a mass-production fighter that appeared to be made out of tinfoil, was only hit once, and managed to walk away uninjured ).

Hey Chris, I've seen you pining for this show for quite sometime and never felt much pity for you having seen only 1 or 2 episodes myself. All of that changed today with me watching a good chunk of the marathon.

What can I say? I've always been a late comer. Didn't start watching Buffy until a saw a marathon on Memorial Day a few years back. Must be something about holidays and me having no life.

Back on topic. DA looks to have been something quite special. There were a lot of elements in the show that reminded me of other shows I really enjoyed:

Manticore reminded me of the Centre from The Pretender.

Jessica Alba had more than one moment of looking quite a bit like Eliza Dushku when she was playing Faith. Before anyone says it I know their characters were nothing alike.

Everytime I saw Logan I kept comparing him to both Wesley and Dr. Daniel Jackson. Again mostly a physical comparison especially when he was in the wheelchair.

I don't want to get into an ultra long post about every detail of the show so I'll just end by saying that I really liked it. Think I'll be adding some more DVD's to my collection of canceled shows very soon.

Me too; I always skip it.
Gear changes should be something Buffy and Angel fans should be accustomed to, but still the switch to overt science-fictiony 'nomoly-filled episodes in S2 was rather crude; I think the first season was excellent drama, and the second dipped into the fantastical a little too deeply- but I still love them both.

Just finished with my season 1 DVDs. What a spectacular show! Really liked the interaction between Max and the other X5's. The fight scenes are incredibly well done, especially for a TV show. The writers did a great job balancing the doom and gloom of Max's work with Logan vs. her more light-hearted dealings at Jam Pony. Speaking of Jam Pony the secondary characters on this show are so finely crafted. Special props go out to Normal, who had me laughing my ass off on more than one occasion.

The slow torture that is the Max/Logan realationship is absolutely brutal. This may be
the most drawn out, painful, just get it over with pairing in TV history.

But perhaps the most tragic moment occurs in the episode Pollo Loco where Max confronts Ben at the end and asks him to tell her about "the good place". That whole scenario is just so tragic.

The season finale is one of the best I've ever seen. There is so much going on that it just begs for multiple viewings.

Just started season two and suffered quite an early disappointment. It looks as though the wonderfully grey Donald Lydecker has been killed off. How can such a great presence like his be
replaced? If he is gone for good I must say I don't like the way in which the writers chose to write him out of the story. On a brighter note, the Halloween episode Boo is quited possibly the funniest stand alone episode I have ever seen on a non comedy show.

That's all I've got for now, I'll check in again when I'm finished with season two.

His body wasn't found, and I think he was happy to disappear for a while. It was their idea, I think, to bring him back in the third season, but alas, that didn't happen.
The tone of the series changed drastically for the second season, but the Logan/Max thing kept me glued. You can see the heat between them, and it was there in real life- that made it all the more believable.
Later, boo.

Plus it's kinda fun to watch Ames White chew up the scenery. It's so rare to see the "evil bishounen" archetype outside of animé.

Yay! Someone else who like DA and the Pretender.

There's a show that got a bit bizzare with time. I prefe to pretend the last "movie" didin't happen.

As to DA. Ho did I miss this thread?
I love Dark Angel. Great characters, great stories.

I was a little miffed by a few things in the second season yes. Still good but almost a different show. And they dropped two of my favorite characters without any explanation. Herbal and Bling. They're just gone. Not once are they even mentioned. You'd think Max would ask about Herbal at least. I know they're not supper important but I liked 'em. Two of the most sensible folks in the show. Especially Bling. Love how he dealt with Logan and Max.

And while I agree that Lydecker was meant to return later, I still miss him. Great character. And played so well.

yeah I don't think anyone was expecting it to get cancelled so quickly and there were probably a lot of ideas for future seasons....
I always felt that the second season was weaker than the first, but I could understand that it did follow logically...
and was probably building to a really great third season. I was always disappointed that Dark Angel was cancelled, I really loved the show.

SINGATE

I went ahead and blazed through S2 in record time. If I make any missteps please excuse me since I can't commit everything to memory in only one very fast viewing.

I agree with most people that S1 is the stronger season. Better villain, better stories. The show became more supernatural than sci-fi almost crossing into Buffy territory in a few episodes. I can also see how some people dismiss S2 as "freak of the week" episodes with so many unusual Manticore "projects" popping up on each show. However, the more I thought about it a question occured to me: where else could the show have gone in S2 without Manticore around? Suddenly a government cover up with a secret cult looking to eliminate the so-called transgenic scum didn't seem so odd to me.

Onto some specifics. I found it unusual that three characters from the first season disappeared with absolutely no explanation of what happened to them. The one I really missed was Bling. Cool character and seemingly invaluable to Logan in S1. I really thought he would be a big part in S2 but the writers made it seem like Logan didn't even notice he was missing.

Alas, they did do a great job with the new faces. Alec, Joshua, and Asha were outstanding replacements. Alec is the best of the bunch and I think the writers knew what they had featuring him in nearly every episode. In particular I loved his interaction with Joshua, it was like watching a comedy team whenever they were together. I've read that some people were feeling an attraction between Max and Alec but there was only maybe one time when I actually thought something would happen between them. Their relationship for me was him being the smart ass brother who is always needing to be bailed out.

Speaking of brothers it was cool to see Zach get something of an encore after his sacrifice. The resolution of his character wasn't comepletely satisfying but it was good to see him again. I was hoping the writers would get around to bringing back a few more of Max's fellow escapees but it never happened.

I found myself liking the new baddie Ames White more and more as the season progressed. He was no Lydecker but seeing the bad guy take a more hands-on approach was fun. I so wanted Joshua to snap his spine in the finale but Max just wouldn't let him do it. Now that would have been a great exit for the villain.

I do have a few questions. What is the deal Manticore progeny and crime? Almost every charcter we see is either a thief or a con-artist. Secondly, why does it appear everyone on the show has a drinking problem? I know there aren't a whole lot of amenities post pulse but there must be other things that could occupy their time. Note - I am pro alcohol.

In closing there are a lot of similarites with what happened to Dark Angel and Firefly. Both were created by very talented people who really loved the material and both were cut short by the same idiotic network. I think it's safe to say that James Cameron, like Joss Whedon, is in no hurry to work in televsion with a certain network ever again.

I was torn about that. Yeah it was cool to see him again, but the 'I've got a heart for you' moment was one of the best in S1 and his return kind of undercut it. Ah well. I guess the temptation to give the character a pseudo happy ending was too great ;)

Grounded, you have 'return' issues.

I agreed w/Chrisisall, but also I think that the whole concept of living outside of society means living through crime: it was hard for Max to maintain even that fringe type messenger service job without people noticing that she was 'different'. It is easier to hide when you aren't working 9to5 rubbing shoulders everyday with those who are making an honest day's living....

And of course all the manticore kids had to stay in hiding that first season, because they were being actively hunted.

I thought the third season might explore a world where the general population knew that transgenics were real....
people afraid of them (like the themes explored in X-men), people trying to keep them in their ghetto (segregation), maybe companies trying to exploit them....
I felt that there were a lot of places the third season could go that had to do with the secret really being 'out' and what that would mean for both the Manticore kids and society in general.

Personally I would embrace a mini-series or movie based on Dark Angel.

Actually the biggest difference as far as I could see between Dark Angel and Firefly was that Joss can't ignore the voices in his head:
James Cameron seemed to accept the cancellation and walked away from his show (albeit sadly)
but Joss has stories and characters inside of his skull that are demanding expression,
so he wrote the movie
and he wrote comics and is writing more comics...
he isn't done, which is a BIG difference.

So did I, actually. It made sense to have him standing there alongside Ben and Yoda --the only three Jedi Luke has known.

What I hate is the replacement of Sebastian (whose face Luke would recognize as his father) with Hayden (who Luke's never seen in his life). It's just insulting to Shaw as an actor.

actually I was even more bored by episode 2....

I was annoyed by just about everything in #1
(except the scenery, loved that)

but in episode 2 I wasn't even annoyed...
I knew what people were going to say before they said it and I didn't find one single thing that happened either surprising or interesting....

*yawn*

this thread is getting just a wee bit OT, huh?

Not when you consider that Max was gonna steal unfinished footage from the 3rd SW trillogy out of Fox's vaults on DA to sell to rabid fans...

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

And back to being even more on topic. The last two episodes of Dark Angel air tonight on Sci-Fi, beginning at 7pm Eastern/Pacific time. Beware that the finale, "Freak Nation," is 90 minutes, so it won't be over until 9:30 E/P, and it will be followed by a repeat of the two hour pilot. Then next week they will resume with the second ep, but only one per week this time around.

OMG! You are soooo right! LOL
that was so funny, I didn't remember that from the first time I had seen the show
(I'm currently watching for the 2nd time ever,
and actually I think I missed some episodes years ago when it was on the air)

I am so happy that Sci-fi channel is showing Dark Angel,
I know I'll treasure the videos I made!
Now my question is: are there good 'extras' on the DVDs?
Because not all DVD sets are any better than videos in that regard.

Oh yeah, the commentaries are few and far between, but good. An the out-takes are great. And they got Michael's screen test, as well as others. Some here from the U.K. got the American R1 release and region-free players just for the extras.

That whole thing about Star Wars footage really cracked me up but even better was the episode where Max and Alec attempted to steal Sammy Sosa's 756 HR ball. Guess that theory didn't quite work out.

Once a series grinds a character into the ground, you don't ever want to see them again. You hated seeing Vader show up as a happy ghost, didn't you?

Do I? Uh oh... ;)

I don't remember saying I didn't like Buffy coming back. Besides, that's kinda different given that she was the lead and therefore a lock for resurrection.

I can't remember what I thought of happy-Vader-ghost first time I saw it, but in retrospect it's one of the dumbest things in the history of film.
