Semi spoilers....so read at your own risk.

Per the episode ( aired 10/20/06 ) where Galactica jumped into atmo , launched its Vipers, and then jumped out..... Anyone else see the problem here ?

Wasn't it established from Season 1 that it takes specific amount of time before jumping can happen again? Doesn't the maneuver the Galactica pulled off contradict all that ?

Thoughts.

*p.s.* Regardless, I thought it was a wicked cool sequence. And seeing Galactica enter into atmo made me think of seeing SERENITY on the big screen for the 1st time. ( But then, what DOESN'T ? )

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

It does take time for larger ships, but you forgot a detail. Before the action, remember: The Galactica was skulking around the ion (or whatever it is) cloud waiting for the chance to strike.
They didn't leap into the atmosphere; they were already in near orbit, waiting for the Raptors to use the drone decoys. They had already leaped into the cloud; then they just waited, attacked, broke atmo for the maneuver, and leaped out into orbit to handle the basestars.
No faux pas (well, there were some in the ep as a whole, but this wasn't one of them - but, really, who cares, since that was one of the coolest eps of any sci-fi show I've ever seen).

That was one heck of a sequence. I watched the second part of the back-to-back slot just to see that scene again. I can't wait for the DVD to come out already.

We've given up trying to record it off our neighbors' cable and are just ITunes-ing. I just saw it for the first time and we're now replaying. This was the Best.Frackin.Episode.Yet. I'm dying here! The ACTING! The battle sequence! The death of a valiant Battlestar! Oh my Gods! (just kidding about that last)

And an entirely satisfactory ending about little Kasey... I was afraid of just that. I wasn't sure if she was a Cylon or a stolen human child, was hoping they were not so horrid as to steal a child from a mother, but true to the series, that's exactly what they did.

Col. Tigh's face at the end... What a heartbreaker.

Thank you for pointing that out. Now I remember. I just thoght that when Tigh et al looked up at the Galactica bearing down on them that it had just jumped. My bad. Faith in BSG restored.

Who ever thought up that sequence should get some sort of SciFi award.

I gotta rewatch that episode when I get home, cause I swore it jumped into atmo.

I coulda sworn it did too. If they coulda' just bull-rushed into the atmosphere, the Cylon orbital blockade must not have been very effective.

My only explanation is that it's something they cooked up either while on the run (last season), while sitting around in orbit (during the fast-forward), or jury-rigged for the special occasion.

*watches battle sequence for umpty-umpteenth time*

Definitely some kinda *pop* there - I would assume FTL jump but I guess it could just have been the moment the ship became visible to those on the ground.

Funny none of 'em got nervous, seeing that thing obviously in free-fall directly overhead... I woulda been. Okay, I was. And I was just watching it from the safe side of the screen.

Maybe they were too much in shock to get nervous. It was a hell of an impressive sight, seeing that big hulk of a ship free falling. I'd say the 'WTF ?' factor was maxed out.

Yeah, I watched the episode again today, with the Ron Moore podcast commentary. It definately jumped into the upper atmo, but he says that there was nothing in established rules that said it wouldn't work. Maybe it's longer jumps that take a long time to recharge from, and they could pull off two little jumps with enough left over for a big one to escape the system. I'm not sure.

But if they aren't at least nominated for the special effects in that episode, there is something wrong with the world!

And, rewatching it again, I noticed a slip-up in the CG, the first I've seen. When Baltar is walking around his office in Colonial One about ten minutes in, talking to the Cylon reps, for a few frames you can see just the green screen outside a window.

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Well, they were pinned down by a couple of Cylons, so any nerves they had left would've been jangled enough. Plus, they know Adama, and they know he's neither suicidal nor stupid.

It's faith.

If he's jumping Galactica onto their heads, he's probably got a damn good reason, one that doesn't involve killing the people he's coming to save.

They jumped into atmo, but I don't recall it ever being said Galactica had to wait to re-jump. I thought it was for the civilian ships. Anyway, something to look out for when I re-watch past seasons. This show is amazing, and I agree, that ep should win awards this year. Well, unless they outdo themselves

I guess we need folks who have 1st season eps on dvd , or to go back and check 'em out online, if available. I swear I recall them counting down before the next jump, not because of the civilian ships, but because of how the jump mechanisms work. The Cylons were also limited to how quickly they could jump, so it wasn't just allowing for the rest of the fleet to keep up. Maybe the reset counter was to indicate when they could jump their furthest distance. Shorter jumps possibly could be done in quick succession, with in a matter of seconds, and not minutes. That would kinda sorta make sense, right ?

I also remember talk of needing the navigational computers to resolve a course, and for the data to be distributed to all ships. A one-ship "micro-jump" like that can probably be streamlined using best-guess estimates (well, not jumping in, but jumping out to orbital space can't have been too hard).

Darn it, I'd check the first episode to clear things up, but I've loaned season 1 out to a friend.

As for the faux pas I have no idea, but I will say that was my favorite episode since the first ep of the first season. Both had me on the edge of my seat, and I don't normally spend a lot of time there for anyone.

In the 5th ep of the first season, "33", the fleet was chased and found 33 minutes after each jump...and in that ep they clearly show the control room crew counting down, resetting the clock, etc. They were chased for 200+ jumps, I think.

Not that wiki is gospel, but...

http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/FTL

There is no mention of lags between jumps save for recalculation time.
