As a flipside to the "sexy spacecraft" thread, what do you think is the most pug-ug piece of feiwu to take to the black? I'll start by nominating the Daedalus class from Star Trek.

Great Thread Cruithne3753:

I actually have a ship in mind that I thought was awful. I can not find a picture of it. I wonder why? It was in a movie called "Battle Beyond the Stars". They stole the script from the "Magnificent Seven". This movie is the worst science fiction I have ever seen. Actually it is the worst movie I have ever seen.

But returning to the subject. The ship was pink or flesh colored. That should give you a hint how horrible it was. If any body can find a picture of it before me, please post it here.

You have never seen anything this ugly before.

Oh...you mean the flying female torso John Boy Walton flies? It was certainly an interesting design...but ugly? I dunno...

Personally, I think an ugly ship were the fighters flown by Wilma Deering and Buck Rogers in the 80s version of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century." Those suckers look like some trying to jazz up a doorstop

I love that movie; had a budget that would feed a youth hostel dinner, once, if you didn't want them to eat. Roger Corman gold!

No redeeming merit except for Sybil Danning's chest (She played a Space Valkarye) and Corman's genius for fun.

In fact, if you listen to the dialogue, a lot of it is very Firefly-esque:
Nell: 30 seconds and counting, Zed. 29, 28, 27, 24, 15, 22... did I... did I say 15?
-----------
Nestor 1: [eating a hot dog for the first time] There's no dog in this.
Cowboy: Uh-uh.
Nestor 1: Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, soybean meal, niacin, dextrose, and sodium nitrate flavoring.
Cowboy: Yup, that's what we call "meat" back home.
------------
Sador: Are you capable of speech?
Nestor 2: Yes, quite capable.
Sador: And do you have a high tolerance for pain?
Nestor 2: Almost none at all, I'm afraid.
Sador: How unfortunate for you. So... How many ships do the Akira have, and what are their capabilities?
Nestor 2: If I told you that, it would give you an unfair advantage.
Sador: This is Frojo, my Third Officer. Frojo is expert at inflicting pain... while keeping the victim alive.
Nestor 2: ...It's good to have skills.

Ship is hysterical crap, though.

I'll have to agree with you there Kaneman. The Millenium Falcon is pretty much just a big circle thing....It seems like they didn't really try too hard to make it look cool. But then I also haven't really watched much sci-fi either, so I really am not the best judge of them...

Anyway, I think all the ships in that movie were terrible looking. What about the gunstar from The Last Starfighter? Its the fat, deformed forgotten cousin of the X-wing.

Not really a spacecraft as such, but I always hated Thunderbird 2 for some reason. When I was eight, I always envisioned space-craft as being rocket-y, not some huge blob of flying green putty...and that belief, to some degree, still holds in my mind today.

Plus, Brutus from the Firefly pilot wasn't the best looking tin-can made for space travel really...although, with a thorough scrubbing, it might surprise people with it's suppressed beauty...Hell, I dunno...

That is what the creators of this movie went for. If they had other ideas it would have been blue or yellow. Unless you are into camp movies, I would stay away from this one. It is hard to believe that the original story is from classic Japanese film, "The Seven Samurai". Now there is an excellent movie.

Oh, and if you think you can handle a Gunstar and are using a PC...try this:

http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter/Starfighter.zip

Heh...

I'm still running through the archives of my mind trying to pick out a bad one. For some reason the "Eagle" in 1999 keeps popping into my head, but I never thought of it as "ugly" as much as "odd". Of course, it looked pretty cool in the early 70's.

Now, I DO remember a movie (and I don't think it was all that long ago really, maybe mid to late 80's) that starred a football player as the main character. I remember that they totally ripped the space scenes from the original BSG, right down to where the cylon raider crashed into the landing bay of the Gallactica. At one point they had a "chase scene" where the main character was either chasing or trying to get away in what appeared to be little more than a bumper car. It was just a bad, bad, badly done movie. And as a whole I'd say the movie itself was a piece of junk.

Hello Stegasaurus:

It sounds like your movie was Flash Gordon. It came out in the early 1980's.

The were trying to recapture the feel for the old Buster Crabbe serials of Flash Gordon from 1936. If the had made tiny little spaceships and hung them from strings like the original they may have done a better job of catching the essence of the original. Gotta love those 1936 spaceships bouncing around like little toys with sparklers used for rocket exhaust. But the dialogue was the best part. Dale, the heroin, would scream, "Flash!" and then faint in ever episode.

Sorry to ramble. I just love to reminise those old Flash Gordon serials.

There's a lot of real winners in the new Star Wars series... Also, I didn't like the ship in Pitch Black, too mcuh like a wannabe 2001 A Space Odyssey. Also, although I really liked The Chronicles of Riddick, I just say that a lot of the Necromonger ships were really wierd although unique. The merc ship was also pretty hokey.

Can't think of much else, but Sputnik 3 really nailed the "crap Russian copy of a Dalek" look.

The Mig 25 Foxbat. F15 lookalike. Most feared interceptor in the world, until they found out it was made from old manhole covers.

However, it scores cool points for having gigantic engines and valves in the Radar which was immune to EMPs and (being obviously built by Marshall) put out 500KW and could kill rabbits on the runway. (I read all this on the Internet, so it must be true).

Always LOVED the film EXPLORERS. One of my all time favourite Kids movies.

I kinda liked the spaceship the Aliens had.

Anyway as for dodgey looking crafts well I'd have to say the ones James Cameron uses in his films always seem lame to me. From the Drop ship, to the Sulaco in Aliens. Dreadful, dreadful designs. Even the floaty thing in Terminator I, II had some ropey looking craft.

Then there is the Naboo fighter from Episode 1 aswell as the cruiser from I, II, and III.

From Empire Strikes Back those weird twin cockpit things in the City in the Clouds.

From EVENT HORIZON - the Event Horizon ship:

Baaaad Design.

And this thing from the terrible Fifth Element:

To name but a few....

Just sore from looking to long at that terribly
ugly ship. Yes it is from "Battle Beyond the Stars".

Others have brought up other ships, but their ugliness does not come near the horrible design of this craft. The producer who used it in the movie should win an award for having the courage to do so.

Sorry if this upsets anyone, but I don't consider Serenity a particularly good-looking ship. Not the ugliest on the block either, but not the prettiest.

But she doesn't have to be pretty. She has to do her job... and, modulo the occasional buffer panel detachment, she does it pretty well.

Oh, it was a great show indeed. Classic dialogue and situations, such as:

Thodin's bug bomb (having crawled out of his nose!) has caused chaos in His Shadow's computer system, causing crossed wires between Thodin's trial and an award ceremony for young recruits to the Divine Order. As a result of the chaos, two bio-mechanical guards mistakenly believe Thodin has been granted an award of merit by His Shadow, and so they allow Thodin to take their weapons. As they're walking carefully away:

Guard: Hail Thodin, winner of - correction! Thodin, arch-traitor and heretic, you have been sentenced to death for crimes against His Shadow. Please return our weapons.

- Thodin shrugs, and he and a co-heretic blast the guards!

At times the most bizarre series I'd ever seen, but I loved it. Having Eva Habermann and Xenia Seeberg didn't exactly hurt...
