Okay, I understand the reasons why I want to see WW, that being the outfit and the fact that Joss is directing it, but what I'm trying to figure out is why everyone is going so ga-ga over the prospect of a WW movie.

WW was never, IMO, a great character, ranking only slightly higher than Aquaman and slightly lower than the Flash. Now granted, I could be categorized as a Marvel Whore, though my favorite super hero was, is, and always will be Superman, but I still don't get it. So she's a powerful female character, hell she was DCs token for a long time. But all she really is is a rehash of Superman given a short skirt a lasso and an invisible jet.

Now, I'm not trying to incite a flame war, I'm simply trying to understand, and I wanted to make my opinion clear so you all know where I'm coming from.

CYBERSNARK

Actually, Wonder Woman (the current post-Crisis one) is interesting 'cause she's the exact opposite of Superman and Batman.

She's from a warrior culture, and (unlike the men) she has no illusions about not killing (she'll avoid it if possible, but she knows that sometimes it's necessary to end people expediently). She's also known (in the JLA comics) for being willing to cut deals with her enemies --they'll spar with her and help her train, and she'll get the warden to knock time off their sentences. Another interesting thing is that she doesn't really do the whole "secret identity" thing. She dresses down on occasion, but it's more like a celebrity slumming it --she sometimes gets recognized. This is probably because she has no real "family" ties outside of Themiscyra, aside from her friends the Sandsmarks (Helena and her daughter, Cassie a.k.a. Wonder Girl).

Plus, being magic-based, she's actually a bit tougher than Superman, and she has actual combat training (as opposed to Clark "swing wildly and try to hit something" Kent).

The only reason my hopes are up is because it's going to be a Joss movie. Other than that I'd pass on this movie. I'd probably never even see it on video.

Wonder Woman just isn't a very interesting character IMO.

Don't flame me, but even as a kid, I thought Wonder Woman was a little silly. I used to watch the old Linda Blair reruns on TBS or something. I'm sure the actual comics are better, but the spinning? And the Lasso of Truth and an invisible jet? I mean, it's kinda lame. Just thinking about it makes me giggle. But I'm sure Joss will make an awesome movie. Don't know if I'll see it in the theater, but I'd rent it.

Cybersnark makes a good point. WW is magic based and as such is a weakness to Superman. She could defeat him if she chose to do so. She is a warrior. She has killed. I think her greatest hindrance has been her rogue gallery.

What's so great about WW? She's this powerful woman that can tangle with the greatest superheroes. She's intelligent, compassionate, strong, and beautiful just to name a few qualities. She's a strategist and linguist and leader. Can you say that about Superman? Batman has way more training than Supes does.

I know it's a bit a of a stretch, but bear with me here: Zoe. She’s a strong, confident, strategist in a gorgeous package. While her prowess is intimidating to many men, she does have this tender feminine side that Wash sees and appreciates. She's capable of love and war. I (probably nobody else) think of WW when I think of Zoe. Joss just got the writing better. WW has had dozens of writers adding and subtracting over the years.

Anyway...that's why for me. She's all woman yet equal to men in her field.

If you want to be super picky...Lynda Carter.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that the creator of WW had a goal. Women were struggling for equal footing. Comics were hugely popular and reached a large audience. He decided, with the help of his wife, to create a female archetype. He wanted women to be proud of themselves. It's okay to have masculine qualities like strength and power...because they're not masculine, they're human, just like your feminine qualities. Be proud of all you have to offer. He was an odd and interesting man.

I'm very much with the OP on this one. I understand why Joss is doing it, but, to me, it just feels like a waste of his talent...though that's just my opinion on a WW movie getting in the way ;)

I never would have had the thought "We need a Wonder Woman movie." I also never would have thought "If they do one, they must get Joss." But the upside is, he'll do a great job with it. It will (hopefully) make lots of money. Then maybe when they come to him for another movie, he can say, "I'll do that for you, if you let me do Serenity 2 first."
Yeah, wishful thinking.

Wonder Woman is the quintessential ass-kicking hot chick, from which all ass-kicking hot chicks are derived. I don’t know what more there is to say, and it’s pretty much right up Joss’ alley. He has been priming himself for a Wonder Woman movie all his life.

I think the problem I've always had with WW is something so simple people will probably look at me with ridicule for it: I think her costume looks dumb, and the invisible jet just bothers me too much. Because of these two things I've never gotten to know the character enough to actually pass judgement on her.

Actually, the invisible jet thing was pretty ridiculous, and I think when they revisited the Justice League, someone else thought so too. (No one can see her flying through space--just sitting there piloting--and she always new where she parked it and where the handle was to get into it????!!!! How the hell did she read the control panel to know her altitude and...ugh!)

That is why WW can now fly in the new Justice League. What's more, she kicks AAAASSSSS. She doesn't run like a campy 60's heroine deflecting bullets with brass bracelets, she tears down buildings with her hands and is $&#*$ing Batman on the side. (Go Bruce!) I'm sure Joss will make it his own, but cripes I hope there's no invisible jet.

Actually, there is still an "invisible jet," but it's been reimagined as a cloaked Javelin-class transport (i.e., only invisible from the outside, seats six [or more, if the plot requires it], capable of FTL transport).

(And she wasn't boinking the Bat. She flirted with him and they "dated" a few times [when one or the other needed arm-decoration for a social function]. The most sparkage was that time when Mordred reduced them all to teenagers. She's way too smart to get seriously involved with Bruce's trainwreck of a social life [and he never seemed that into her anyway].)

I do agree this is the movie Joss has been building towards considering what he has done with female characters in his other works. While I have faith that he can make a good movie the real question is will it be a successful movie. If it bombs he may lose his last shred of bankability with Hollywood big wigs. On the other hand if it goes on to be a blockbluster he may have some leverage to get other projects rolling...

"Please, no more movies based on comic books -- they're about as appetizing as blood-filled Twinkies." - Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly Online

My only recent exposure to WW is through Frank Miller's DK2, which was something of a disappointment considering the original. Somehow, though, I suspect that Whedon's WW will be completely different. I'm going to wait for the reviews on this one; I just hope that Joss avoids some of the action tropes that he employed in Serenity...

WW had been flying for many many years before the League. While Marston didn't have her flying in the first issue, it didn't take long. I think the gift of flight was from Hermes. The jet was weird. Nowadays she uses it when she needs to fly people with her. I know I've seen Cassie flying in the jet with her.

Which is wierd 'cause Cassie can also fly.

Everytime I think of superhero jets now I think of that Batman/Superman issue that had Robin in the batplane and Superboy tagging along outside.

"Can I fly the jet?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Remember what happened when I let you drive the car?"
". . . Batman had to order a new car."
"Exactly.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I never understood the WW thing. Magic lasso and kewl bracelets that can bounce bullet w/ out shattering her wrist....ok, fine. Big deal. But the whole invisible jet thing....how does THAT make any sense ? Do Amazon women fly invisible jets ? Do they have some sort of super stealth technology suitable for 20th ( or 21st ) century aviation? And what are Amazon women building these invisible jets out of ?

It's easy to see that I don't follow her character beyond Lynda Carter's lame 70's t.v. show. But WW is about as lame a 'super'hero as The Phantom with his standard issue sidearm.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Yeah, but most of those people don't really like Bruce.

Alfred: Looks on Bruce as a surrogate son and tries to protect him.
Dick: Not sure, think they may have had a falling out after Infinite Crisis and the obliteration of Bludhaven.
Jason: Dead, then came back Evil.
Tim: Looks to Bruce as a father-figure, after getting his own dad killed.
Stephanie: Dead.
Vickie: Not sure how she fits into the comicverse.
Selina: Moved on with her life (after being betrayed by Batman) and now has a child by another man.
Babs: Crippled.
Jim Gordon: Retired.
Cassie Cain: Used to be a surrogate daughter, but has now turned evil.
Helena: Not a friend.
Clark: Bruce's best friend, and one of the few metahumans who still trusts him.

(Y'know, it's really amazing how much Batman and his "family" has grown and changed and developed while Superman is still in basically the same place as he was was ten years ago.)

Personally, Batman's all right in my book.

The reason why he got a bad wrap is because Superman gave him a Kryptonite ring and told him that should he (Superman) ever lose control, Batman shouldn't be afraid to take him out. He felt Batman was the only one who was worthy and capable of that task. Batman thought, "What if everyoneshould lose control?" then proceeded to find their weaknesses and stockpile Bat-antisuperhero weapons. Everyone in the JL found out, and it didn't improve his rep. there. Only Superman really forgave him. But then, of course...Superman started it.

In a lot of ways Clark is more human than all of us, and I know it's hard not to think of him as a god when you see him shooting fire from the sky. We should all consider ourselves fortunate that that thought has never occured to him. --Batman
