Okay, for this thread I am asking what are your favorite characters from any movie, regardless of genre or how major they were. Are there any characters you could really identify with of that stood out at you for any odd reason?

For me, Henri Ducard/Ra's Al Ghul in Batman was very admirable despite being the ultimate villain of that film. Everything from his unflinching belief to the way he spoke was impressive. In many ways, he is much like the Operative in Serenity, prepared to do whatever is necessary to defeat evil and save the world.

Dalton Russell in Inside Man. Again, another crusader who masterminds an ingenius bank robbery to exact revenge against a former Nazi collaborator.

Aragorn in LOTR. What every leader should be, calm, caring, dimplomatic, and completely selfless in caring for the needs of his people.

Of course Mal, Jayne, and Book. Mal is an amazing complicated yet simple person who deeply cares for his crew, and in many ways I share his bitterness to the world, and like him I'm not looking to ingratiate myself with anyone. Jayne because at times I feel kind of dumb like him, and I'm also obsessed with money and immature. Book, because I admire his diplomacy and skill in helping the crew of Serenity navigate through even the worst situations.

AND finally, the Purifier from The Chronicles of Riddick. If you remember he was the priest-like character played by Linus Roache who did a brilliant job who was part of the dark army of bad-guys called Necromongers. This character by far I most personally identify with because of certain circumstances in my life right now. I feel his pain of being a proud member of a bold race, but being forced to bow down and renounce what he was to become a complete abomination and everything he stood against. Though a relatively minor character and arguably not even necessary in the story, I think many people in the world today can relate to his situation.

I am evil, I am sly, and if you get eaten no one will cry.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Edward Scissorhands The whole concept of this character is wonderful and realised to it's nth degree in the film. What cements it for me though is the understanding of the character from a visual point of view aswell as the poetic point of view. So when that scene where KIM asks EDWARD to hold her, he pauses, before saying - he can't.
Kim refuses to accpet this and positions herself within his arms despite his sharp blades and manages to embrace him. The imagery is something quite sublime.
If you've not seen it please give it a go.

Ooh, good thread!

Conan (Conan The Barbarian/Destroyer)
This man's village was burned to the ground, everyone murdered, and he was forced to watch the beheading of his mama. He was then put into slavery for 20 years. So he decides to avenge his parent's death, and kill Thulsa Doom (and his creepy blue eyes). Noble, strong, herioc - the epitome of a hero.

Jayne Cobb (Serenity)
Ok, so he's a big dumb lummox. But he's brave, he's cool as fk, and in the end, he's prepared to lay down his life to do the right thing. Plus he has some funny lines and likes grenades.

River Tam (Serenity)
River was tortured for a couple of years, had her brain stripped, and gleaned more horrific stuff than any human should be aware of. She can't block out anyone's thoughts or feelings. Yet she was still strong enough to come through vaguely intact, and strong enough to take out a bar full of thugs and a raiding party of Reavers with little more than a few stratches. That's my kinda kero. Plus, y'know, she's really hot!

Bill S Preston, Esquire & Ted 'Theodore' Logan (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey)
Dumn, ignorant, slack-talking surfer dudes, who like nothing better than sitting around talking about Megadeth. What ain't cool about that!?

Captain Spaulding (House Of 1000 Corpses/The Devil's Rejects)
An angry yokel clown. Who runs a petrol station and freakshow combo. And likes to murder people. And is angry and slightly insane ALL the time. And he has some damn funny lines, too.

McMurphy- One flew over the cuckoo's nest. He's not crazy everybody else is.
Murphy- Murphy's War. Captain Ahab against the Nazis. Royal Irish Merchant Marine strikes back.
Conan- Why are you crying. Because he will not. So I cry for him.
BDHs- enough said.
Alias Smith and Jones- Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry. Outlaws who are fun.
Cimarron Strip- Marshal Jim Crown. Only Marshal Dillon shot more bad dudes.

"Battle of Serenity, Mal. Besides Zoe here, how many-" "I'm talkin at you! How many men in your platoon came out of their alive".

LWAVES

In no order:

Sam Rockwell's character (can't remember name) in Lawn Dogs. Someone who just wanted to be left alone to live his life.

Roy Batty from Blade Runner. Here is someone who just wanted to live and would do anything to achieve that, and he saved Deckards life. His end quote is one of my all time favourites.

Floyd in True Romance. So funny.

Scrat from Ice Age movies. Final scene in sequel cracks me up everytime.

Leon coz he's just cool - but with depth.

River. Coz you just wanna hold her and make everything alright.

Gotta agree with Moonlight Graham. And man who knew and understood his place and part in life and was happy with it. Fantastic film.

Agree with Aragorn as well. Pefect representation of what the character should be.

That'll do for now...

Some more:

I also loved Indiana Jones and have watched all three films countless times as a child. He's sort of like Mal with his foolish sense of nobility and he's a character you can really come to like and not root for the bad guys like in many films.

Alex Conklin in The Bourne Identity. Pretty much a real scumbag CIA director who leads the unit trying to catch Bourne, who was a former member. For some reason I liked Chris Cooper's direct to the point and determined performance that made the character very believable, and I much preferred him over Pamela Landy in the Supremacy.

Captain Rich in Flightplan, played by the great Sean Bean. I really want to be a pilot and I think he plays the role very well and I like his cool performance, especially in decision-making.

I like all of the Ocean's Eleven characters. They're all so cool.

Adhar Ru'Ofo in Star Trek: Insurrection. Represents me in a bad mood pretty well, as well as the darker side of me I'd rather hide and not show.

And finally, I'd just like to offer this quote from the Purifier from Riddick, "We all began as something else. I've done unbelievable things in the name of a faith that was never my own, and he'll do to her what he did to me." Linus actually improvised this line and I have heard very few lines that struck me as hard as this. Such an amazing character and the fact that he is not named really says a lot about his role. If any of you have seen the extended director's cut of Riddick he's even more amazing. You can just feel the angst and resentment he has felt his entire life, and I can definitely relate to this with some of the things going on in my decision of my future profession...

I am evil, I am sly, and if you get eaten no one will cry.

There are a lot of great characters, but ones that come to mind:

Frank Bullitt in "Bullitt" - great police officer and it helps that Steve McQueen is THE MAN

Andy Dusfrene in "Shawshank Redemption" - one word...hope

Michael Corleone in the Godfather trilogy - wonderful character dealing with his demons and Al Pacino is awesome

Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver" - DeNiro is great and I think everyone feels on the outside from time to time like Travis

Admiral Adama in Battlestar Galactica - great leader and holds strong to his morals

Thought of some more:

Chris Vaughn (Walking Tall)
Ok, so the war veteran returns home, get's tortured and left for dead. So what's he do?? Beat up a bunch of people with a HUGE FKING PLANK OF WOOD, before becoming the sheriff. Now, call me a simpleton, but there's just something so satisfying about watching a 270lb man hiting people with a plank of wood

Beavis & Butt-Head (Beavis & Butt-Head Do America)
These two dudes remind me of me and my mate Scotty so much it's unreal. Bunghole!

Gimli (The Lord Of The Rings)
A short, hairy dude with an axe. What's not to like??

Maximus Decimus Meridius (Gladiator)
A general in the Roman army, who successfully conquers all of Germania. He is promptly betrayed, escapes execution by being a total badass. He returns home to find his family raped, burned and crucified alive. He is then kidnapped, and as a slave, forced to become a Gladiator. he promptly rips anyone that comes near him a new one, goes to Rome, hands some people their asses on a silver platter, whilst attempting to return Rome to it's people, and it's former glory. He is stabbed, then forced to fight the Emporer, who he promptly kills, makes sure Rome is safe, his ex-girlyfriend and her son are safe, his fellow Gladiators are freed, then dies, to be reunited with his family in the afterlife. If that ain't the definition of a hero, I don't wanna know what is.

It's clear from you post that you like the story behind Gladiator.

Have you seen the HBO Films Series ROME? I watched 3 episodes Sunday night, and all I can say is unbelieveably awesome!

This is many years before the Gladiator time period...before the Empire... but basically the Roman Senate does the same thing to Julius Caesar. After he conquers Gaul ( 8 year campaign), they decide he's a threat to the Republic, so they declare him a criminal. He takes his legions across the Rubicon back into Italy and is prepared to march on Rome.....we all know the history, but to see it so well done...very graphic violence, and uhm..lots of ...a real lots of sex...wasn't much else to do back then I guess 'cept kill and screw ... I dont know if this is the start of the second season, or episodes from the first...but I know I won't miss it.

Wolverine- because that level of sex appeal should be illegal

Alice( Resident Evil)- because kicking butt and taking names can be a woman's job too.

Severus Snape-because teaching kids while oozing elegant, seductive evil is impressive.

Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt)- Fight Club. What's not to love? There's mishief, admiration, independence, and unbridled self-destruction. And soap.

The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood)- The Dollars Trilogy. It's the Star Wars of Spaghetti Westerns, with the most hardcore badass to ever don a poncho.

Inspector Yuen aka Tequila (Chow Yun-Fat)- Laat sau sen taan, aka John Woo's Hard Boiled. Chow Yun-Fat, with two handguns...'nuff said. OKay, and the guys name in Tequila!

Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci)- Casino. In a film with this much class, how can one tiny man be so bloody ruthless? It's scary.

El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas)- El Mariachi Trilogy. Yeah okay, so Mr. Banderas wasn't actually in the first film, but that doesn't matter. No. Why? Because these film are all about style. There's precious little plot to speak of, just look at Desperado-allow me to summarise the plot: A Mariachi arrives in town in search of his girlfriend's murderer and kills everyone he meets. Roll credits. Like I said, it's all about style. And he is stylin'.

Cleric John Preston (Christian Bale)- Equilibrium. Come on people, a form of martial art that actually incorporates handguns into it? Yep, I'll take it. Watching this film made me think that maybe the Wachowski brothers got the wrong Neo.

and lastly...

Master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat)- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. There are no words for just how cool, calm and awesome this guy is.

Hannibal Lecter, because he never blinks when he talks, is completely unnerving, and inspired the modern criminal mastermind we see so often today.

Agent Sands, from Once Upon A Time In Mexico: Johnny Depp, playing the ultimate scheming agent. Everything is going spectacular for him, yet it all comes crashing down without him ever suspecting it.

Got to agree with Oath, Lecter is awesome. Hopkins did a brilliant job.
And someone else said Eric Draven; he was the best of The Crows.

My other favourites (beside the entire Firefly crew) are:

Donnie Darko- Jake Gyllenhaal's best performance. He was creepy, but admirable and awesome. And crazy, but he was sexy crazy.

Jack Mercer- (Garrett Hedlund) My favourite of the Four Brothers. He had this anger that kinda made you want to back away, but at the same time you felt kinda sorry for him. And oh so pretty.

Emiily Rose- (Jennifer Carpenter) The exorcisim was frekin' awesome!

V- Again, I think someone said him, but still, he's cool enough to be mentioned twice.

I can't think of anymore right now.

FASTMOVER

And here's yet some more from the OP:

Davy Jones in POTC2. Fascinating appearance coupled with an interesting past and role in the storyline. Once again, I'm fascinated by idealistic characters, as well as those who enter stories from the outside and significantly alter its course much like Jones does by capturing lost souls and offering them a choice.

Agent Smith from the Matrix. I only saw the first one, but he's a very interesting character who has this really cool demeanor and way of speaking, in many ways like the Operative in the BDM. Plus he's also a menacing opponent.

I am evil, I am sly, and if you get eaten no one will cry.

Sorry for the infodump but, as a Browncoat, I'm in the habit of "converting" people to great shows that they may not be aware of, but should be!
