I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that someone might actually tackle this wonderful (but huge) series... not sure whether to be ecstatic or very apprehensive...

HBO has a good track record as far as quality. If they only make one season, it would still rock.

Yeah, but there's always going to be an element of apprehension when you're seeing one of your favorite series turned to life. I felt that way with Lord of the Rings but, happily, it turned out very well (purists may disagree). So, I shall wait with a mix of anxiousness and happiness. :)

Shit! Here I am without HBO. My biggest concern is whether or not Martin will actually finish writing the damn thing. This is seriously starting to remind me of how Stephen King dragged his ass with The Dark Tower series.

I have faith that HBO can make another excellent series out of Martin's wonderful books.

After all, they made The Wire, which, as much as I love Firefly, may be the best show I've ever seen.

Never heard of the books, then again I haven't bought a new book or been to the library in ages (computer takes most of my time.) What are they about? Love fantasy myself, thought I loath the LOTR books. So long and drawn out, it takes Frodo half the fricken book before he leaves the damn shire? Prefer the movies. So, what are these about?

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting

These are pure fantasy novels. Much more grown up than LOTR. The stories are very complex and character driven, in fact there are so many characters it can get a bit confusing. They are also quite drawn out, so far there have been four novels with no end in sight. Waiting for the last novel made me a bit impatient but they are so well written that it's worth the wait. I recommend you pick up the first book, A Game of Thrones and see if you think the rest are worth your time.

I just started reading the third book, but I can give you the gist of what it is about:

There is a king, whose best friend is from the most powerful family of the north, and whose wife is from the most powerful friend from the south. When the king dies, there is a huge power struggle over who will rule the country as members from the family from the north, the family from the south, brothers of the deceased king, and descendents of the king who ruled prior this king all go to war with one another. Additionally, there are sinister (and possibly monsterous) forces gathering from north of the country who plan to invade as well, unbeknownst to most of the warring factions.

The different members of the family are all having different adventures and the books are very character driven. There really isn't a true evil in the story as most are somewhere in a shade of grey and have their own motivations, and the author isn't afraid to kill off major characters.

Some of the most enjoyable reading in my lifetime.

This is going to be awesome! But I'm even more excited for HBO's "Preacher" series.

On a related note I just read an editoral over at Amazon claiming that The Sword of Truth series may be adapted to the screen by none other than Sam Raimi. I have to believe this would also be some sort of TV series since there were ten or eleven books in the saga.

Thanks to the FFFnetters for turning me on to this series. I cannot get enough. I just finished A Clash of Kings and am anxiously watching the mail for the next one.

What I am enjoying is how each character is both good and bad, as are real human beings. Tolkein's bad are all bad, his good are all good (with a few tiny flaws). Martin's people are just people.

I'm gonna hate reading the last book and then joining those waiting for the next one.

You are one of the many, functionally but not intellectually literate.

When you are intellectually literate the words become delicious and you wish for more not less.
