I know it's probably been mentioned a few times, but watching Deep Impact again last night, I instantly thought of our good girl, SERENITY. The landing sequence w/ the directional vtol ( vertical take off and land ) jets is what sells it. Of course, the vtol concept isn't new by any means, but in it's most simple design version, I still see our Firefly.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Here's a real life example, the experimental VTOL VJ101 fighter - check out those rotating wing tip nacelles! :-

Also, even though it's nacelles don't rotate and it probably won't even be built, there's the reusable single-stage-to-orbit Skylon concept:-

And what do you get if you cross a Reaver ship with a Cylon?

Another real life eaxample would be the harrier Jump jet, which no one has been able to replicate.

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

I was gonna mention either the Boeing or Lockheed Martin JSF vtol craft, but I don't think they are even on par w/ the Harrier, in some aspects. It's definatly ahead of its time.
