Fans of the Greg Bear novel start drooling now: http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=3987&page=2

(Second place trailer link apparenly not working, get it here: http://triunyx.com/films/eon/EON%20quicktime.mov - it is over 180MB and may take a while, haven't seen it yet myself)

Let's hope (pray, demand) they go ahead and make a full-scale movie - it would be the most awesome SF film EVER!

As tensions build between the USA and Russia (USSR when it was written), a huge hollowed out asteroid generation ship appears in orbit round Earth. It contains seven huge landscaped chambers, including a number of cities, but appears to be deserted. Investigations in the main city library reveal that it is Human made and comes from 1000 years in the future, and chillingly there are historical records of "The Death", an all out nuclear war which is almost imminent. There is something not quite right about the seventh chamber, so theoretical mathematician Patricia Vasquez is sent to investigate...

Select to view spoiler:

The seventh chamber is the beginning of a virtually infinitely long tubular mini-universe, which the ultra-hi-tech Human civilization has migrated several billion kilometres along...

(But that is still nowhere near the end of the book.)

Very cool! I love Greg Bear but I've not read this book yet.

I'll have to get it at the library and then watch for the movie? They'd better make a movie, huh?

Sorry - all due respect to the skill of the CGI society people, but the book still has better special effects.

Modern effects are probably up to the challenge of depicting something like this - that doesn't solve the problem of how you turn a hard sci-fi book into a 2-hour script without killing it. I think that about the only story in this genre that has been sucessfully filmed is 2001 (and even then you pretty much needed the book to decode the film, even though the book and the film were written in parallel).

However, it would be interesting to see an amateur (in the non-commercial sense) FX film made with a decent story. Things like "Star Wreck - in the Pirkinning" and (to a lesser extent) the "new voyages" show promise but are partly let down by the fanwank scripts (and the occasional case of "we know he can't act but his girlfriend owns the camera").

It's something that occurred to me - you'd be looking at a 3 hour plus film. Probably would even need to be split into two "volumes".
