Well, having never seen any of the original SPEED RACER, I'm going to guess that they actually captured the spirit of it very well. It really does look like a live action cartoon, and aside from the loudmouth British guy from V FOR VENDETTA and Matthew Fox being all badass at the very end of the film, it does seem pretty light and cartoonish.

The real question is if this is going to be a good thing or a bad thing. Because when I saw it, I thought "This is either going to really, really suck, or be just totally awesome." And right now, I'm seeing a few red flags.

As long as we're on the subject of anime being turned into big moolah films, Dragonball Z is going to be made into a live-action film, for those who haven't heard. James Marsters (Spike from Buffy) will be playing Piccolo.

Still on the fence for this one.

Probably , if the Japanese have a Yen for it , and vote their approval with their cashy money...

I didn't like Hirsch as the title character of 'Into The Wild' , (although it was a
quite-good film) but he looks more plausible in this...

...Does anyone know if the Japanese approved of Serenity on DVD ?

Though Speed Racer is right in my wheel house,it was my first favorite show, I predict this will crash and burn worse than 'The Hulk'.

Every weekday from 3:30 to 4:00 Nothing in the world existed except THE SHOW.

I really liked the cartoon. They should have made an animated movie, from what I have seen I don't think the movie will be that good.

Y'all need to download the HD 1080 trailer!
http://speedracerthemovie.warnerbros.com/cmp/main.html

And have any of you seen the animé's intro in the orignal Japanese?

Mach Go! Go! Go! (Speed Racer)

(Remember: the Japanese word for the number 5 is 'go')

Here's the version we all know...

And I think there's a bit of irony in the Wachowski's doing this movie: Since the intro featured the first example of "bullet time" the world had ever seen!

Well, I loved the original series.

That said, the movie looks.......interesting.

I'll most likely end up seeing it, as well as the live action DBZ movie.

Looks like they managed to capture the cheese factor from the cartoon. John Goodman really looks the part of Pops Racer. I'm guessing that Japanese kid is going to be Speed's main rival. With the over the top racing sequences it would be nice to see my personal favorites, The Car Acrobat team.

Interesting bit of non-canon trivia for you.

Now, I always thought Racer X was cooler, for the same reason Wedge Antillies is a better pilot than Luke Skywalker - when you can do it WITHOUT the special tricks and toys, then ya got something.

So I liked Racer X's car, The Shooting Star, a little better...

Well, I was playing Project Gotham Racing 2 for Xbox, and messing around with a 1974 Lancia Stratos, and from one angle I was like.. "WTF, that looks like..."

And so, into the customising screen and mess with the paintjob, and.. WHOA, it sure looks like it to me.

So...The Shooting Star is a Modified 1974 Lancia Stratos, just so ya know.

I went to see this today, on an IMAX screen no less. The action in this movie is mind boggling. The movie really comes off as a cartoon set in the real world if that makes any sense. It might have been easier to follow and a standard screen but I just couldn't resist.

Aside from making the diaglogue more realistic it really holds true to the cartoon. The racing is way over the top, from the Hot Wheels tracks to the cross country race dubbed as "The Crucible". The characters are just about dead on...Spritle and Chim-Chim sneaking aboard at every turn, Pops having angry outbursts, and Racer X being his cool, mysterious self. Trixie may be the only departure from the series. I just don't remember her being so confident or sexy. Not bad, just different.

I read some early complaints that the Wachowski's changed the Mach 5 but the truth is it wasn't changed all that much. I think this misconception came about from the vehicle seen in most of the advertisements. That car is actually the Mach 6, I believe Racer X referred to that style as an R-180. Those are the vehicles used on the aforementioned Hot Wheels tracks. The Mach 5 is used by Speed during the cross coutry race and is just as cool as I remembered.

Now a few minor spoilers:

Select to view spoiler:

One of my favorite parts of the movie is near the beginning during the first racing sequence. Speed is on the verge of breaking his brother Rex's track record when he imagines that he is actually racing against him. Watching Speed race a translucent version of his brother was quite surreal. It was a nice touch that he slowed down just enough to not break the record.

Anyone who followed the series knows that Racer X is in fact Speed's older brother. The film changed things up a bit when Racer X removes the mask and Speed doesn't recognize him. In the film Rex faked his death in order to go undercover to fight the corruption in the racing world. He had plastic suregery so that no one will recognize him.

I do have a couple of gripes. The character Snake Oiler bears almost no resemblance to his cartoon counterpart. He doesn't race with the car acrobatic team(which really bothers me) and he comes off as a jackass hopped up on either cocaine or steroids. My other complaint is that a car known as the GRX is introduced prior to the final race. In the cartoon this vehicle has almost mythical status. In the movie it is supposed to be the next line of production race cars, that's all, nothing special about it. The design of the thing is horrendous. I don't know what pictures they looked at from the series but the GRX in the movie doen't even bear a passing resemblance to the old cartoon.

One last word of warning. Anyone prone to seizures should probably never see this movie. With the flickering motion, fast paced action, and wild color schemes this film could making anyone twitch. However, if LSD was still en vogue I would definitely recommend it to anyone planning a "trip".

IT's a shame. Finally we get a film based on a classic tv show that stays true to the show, it's fans, and entertains the hell out of an average movie goer and it practically bombs.

Blame the release date. Iron Man is kicking all kinds of ass at the box office. There's no way Speed could compete with that.

Holy CGI!! They shaved 20-30 years off Susan Sarandon - she looks younger than John Goodman, and barely older than Ricci.
They made her look younger than Tim Robbins!
