Okay, maybe no one here stooped to read it, but the books blow. Buffy is a better. But I was writing a post on a Twilight hate comm on LJ and I wondered...what would Joss say about Twilight?

Haven't read it, ain't interested in it - but I did see one thing that made me laugh...

The guy they got to play the character in the movie ?
He looks like Syndrome from The Incredibles - seriously, he DOES!

That's pretty amusing.

America loves a winner!

I have no plans on reading the books or watching the movies, at all. I'm still lukewarm , at best, at the whole vampyre genre. It was the brilliance of Joss and the characters surrounding both Buffy and Angel that drew me in. Frankly, I could care less about horny teen-age angst involving blood suckers - again.

Twilight is, much like Anne Rice's 'works', not so much a part of the vampire genre as they are attempted deconstructions of it.

As I said once on another board, I'm sick and tired of beautiful vampires that just want to get along. This has been the standard Hollywood plot for ages. A vampire love story? Really? Seriously?
The closest a freakin' vampire story should get to a love story is freakin' Carmilla.

I don't mind good guy vampires. I don't even mind good guy vampires with a sunny disposition. Hell, I'm writing a story with a good-guy vampire in it. Aside from being a good guy, he's a complete berserker axe-crazy undead murdermachine hellbent on death and destruction. I specifically wrote him with the ability to feel emotions 'normal' vampires can't. Why? What do you think makes him a berserker axe-crazy undead murdermachine hellbent on death and destruction? It damn sure ain't just the diet.

At some point, Hollywood took away from us the 'Complete Monster' nature of vampires. Which was everything they were. If they're just humans with a different diet, what is the point? Why even bother using the name 'vampire'? Just create your own name for the things. Just because your creatures are neurotic, OCD-ridden parasites does not mean they're vampires.

You want to know how to tell the difference between a vampire and something out of Twilight/Anne Rice?
Insult them. If they slap you and give a snarky comment, not a vampire.
If they gut you, hang you by your own entrails, and THEN deliver a snarky insult as your life slowly fades away, giving you just enough time to properly meditate on your idiocy? You've got a proper vampire.

What would Joss say about Twilight? I honestly can't speak for him. I can only hope he'd get bored and drop it.

I've never read the books. My wife (an English teacher) said the first one was good, and then they take a nosedive.

We went to see the movie, and it's the first movie in almost four decades of movie-going that I've EVER walked out of.
