The show just started up again this past Thursday. Great opener with several surprises.

Select to view spoiler:

I really did not expect Dean to be back in the first episode. The idea of an angel bringing him out of hell was original and a much needed change from "I sold my soul to save you". Not sure about Castiel's intentions; he may very well be an agent of the lord as he claims, but then again, he could be a rebel working on his own agenda. I'm wondering if the show's creators will make a distinction between fallen angels and demons a la the Dresden novels.

Sam using his powers was a huge bombshell. His forcing the demon from it's host reminded me of what his gal pal did a few years ago in that ghost town. I'm guessing the revamped Ruby has been whispering in his ear since Dean died. I'm still unclear as to her intentions. I originally thought she was looking to rule at his side. Now I'm thinking she may be trying to reform and getting Sam to use his talents will only aid in clearing out the bad guys.

The overall story seems to be headed in a direction where Sam and Dean will be at odds. The only question is which one of them is actually on the right side? It's very likely both of them are being played. Only if they realize this can they set aside any idealogical differences and avoid a serious showdown.

OK, so SPOILERS. Read this or watch the show. You have been warned.

Personally, I think it's about time they brought in angels and God into the series. The mythos of the show believes in hell and demons, why not angels and heaven? I don't think that the angel we meet at the end of the show is a fallen angel, I think he is a servant of the lord. Remember we learned that demons were once people who and been in hell for a very long time. Maybe angels are similar but they are people from heaven? Or you can just go with the idea that God created an infinite number of angels like most Christian denominations adhere to.

I think God brought Dean back in order to stop Sammy from using his powers and "going over to the dark side", if you will. So yes, I do thing there will be a showdown between the two. I also think Ruby is using Sammy for her own purposes, I just don't know what yet.

Even though I do like the arc set for this season, I would still like to see some stand alone "Monster of the Week" episodes too.

CYBERSNARK

I really hope they don't go down the "angels are just as bad as demons" route. Every show that's ever featured angels has had an "evil angel" arc (except possibly Touched By an Angel).

I notice that Castiel is much more powerful than any demon we've seen. Too powerful to be a human, I'd say --it might just be that the only "Fallen" in the Supernatural 'verse is Lucifer himself. In fact, that might explain why Lucifer and the angels have been dormant; Lucifer can't or won't get directly involved unless the angels do, and they know that if he did enter the field, Earth would be forfeit.

In which case Castiel could be playing a very dangerous game.

And I think Ruby's on the level this season. She just seems more open. It's possible that going up against Lillith has cemented her place with the boys --with Lillith still out there, Ruby's probably got a death mark on her as well; the boys might well be her only allies at this point.

And the brother-against-brother thing would be a neat reflection of the last three seasons (with Dean as the bad boy and Sam as the nice guy --now Sam's demon-powered and Dean is the agent of salvation).

It's not just this series that falls into this category. Many TV shows and movies dealing with supernatural evil fall back on the addage "God helps those that help themselves". This can't be taking literally because God rarely becomes directly involved in affairs of the mortal world. The reason I think so many writers fall into this pattern is because of the bible. If I'm not mistaken God agrees to let Satan influence the mortal world while not taking an active role Himself. The idea being that man needs to choose salvation and the righteous path for himself. Obviously the real world is a little different than TV land(monsters, demons, etc.) but the same principle seems to hold true. If God takes an active role there would be no war. How can any evil force oppose a being that is omnipotent and omniscient?

As an aside I really like your sig even though I fall more into the first category.

My sig is from the series finally of Angel, I'm not sure if you've seen it or not but it's great. Angel tells it to Adam Baldwin's character as Adam is beating the crap out of him. Adam has a great response to it as well,

Funny thing I didn't realize Ruby was the same girl that was in Sam's room, until I read it in a post elsewhere. I guess with Sam and Dean in the room, I'm suprise I noticed there was a girl in the room.

The episode rocked. I think that maybe both Sam and Dean are being played. I'm not convinced that Castiel is an Angel, I think he might be Lucifer.

So here's the question, was Ruby with Sam and playing dumb when Dean showed up, or was Ruby "with" Sam and playing dumb when Dean showed up. I think it would be awkward to throw in romance between Sam and Ruby considering that Ruby is in someone's body.

Several scenarios come to mind:

First Scenario:

Since Ruby is training him to use his powers, they've been sharing motel rooms. Nothing going on with them. This is disturbing because he's comfortable sharing a motel room with a demon

Second Scenario:

To get Ruby to trust him, he's sleeping with her. This is disturbing on several levels. Since Ruby is possessing an innocent person, he's having sex without her consent. If that person was dead, sex with annimated corpse.

Third Scenario:

He's really having sex with Ruby, no hidden agenda.

I think the first scenario is most likely. She just made it seemed like there was more going on to explain her presence.

alrighty, having the human throw up the demon was a bit stupid. I would have thought Sam's power more WOW than that.

Although, I swear I heard the Nazgul.

Well, heck. I didn't notice until I read your post...

I wonder how many episodes before Dean makes a "I'm on a mission from God.." line.

All they need are a pair of dark suits, sunglasses and hats.
