Which would kick the other's but? For peace of mind, I stipulate neither would die from this.

We've seen comparisons of Scott's Ripley vs Cameron's Connor, Cameron's Ripley vs. Cameron's Connor, and others.

Here are 2 of Chrisisall's favorites: genetically engineered and deep-level trained from birth, versus naturally gifted and deep-level trained for a couple years, with cranial modifications.

Who is more badass? Cameron's Max or Whedon's River?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I would say that Max would be the superior fighter in the tactical sense, but River would have the advantage of intelligence and ability to read her opponent's moves.

I concur with my esteemed colleague here.
Max is also markedly stronger though...it's very close, in point of fact too close for me to call easily.
If Max knew exactly what she was up against, she could conceivably win, but if she went in blind, River would surprise her & take her apart.

I'm sorry...but the classic pairing has always been Max v. Faith from BTVS. The 2 are copies of each other, with Faith being first. Max's character was copied off of Faith, who was on TV at the time of Dark Angel's season 1 writing.

Chris will now call me a fool, as he has done for 3 years.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.

Guess I forgot to mention Max as played by Jessica Alba in Dark Angel.

Don't know no Faith. Would I be wrong to consider BTVS as spoof? I had always thought it was, based on the movie.
I have never considered Dark Angel or Firefly to spoof in any way. Hard for me to conjure any character from BTVS as realistic competition to other scifi characters.

I know River has the mind reading abilities, but vastly less training - couple years. Max was engineered for this, and trained from birth. Both would have their hands full.
Max has been free for years, but has practiced by using her skills for sub-legal activities. River has been free for 8 months, but has not been in practice.
I'll wait for more comments.

Perhaps I should have offered consideration of 2 versions of River:
Subliminally controlled and Alliance Institute programmed (like Maidenhead), or fully aware and self-controlled (like Reavernator defending BDHs while Mal plays with the Operative).

Although it's true that Max's strength would give her a decided advantage over mere mortals, I have to give the edge to River in this matchup.

I'm talking about the "fully aware and self-controlled" River who single-handedly mowed down several Reavers at the end of the BDM. Now let me qualify my comments by saying that I was a big fan of Dark Angel, and only ocassionally would watch BTVS (mainly because of Buffy's A-Kicking style).

But I think that River's mind-reading abilities would win out. Add to that her natural dance abilities, which gives her rythm and movement that could use her opponent's strength against them - well, there you have it.

River by a decision - TKO.

I just thought of something - what if River can't "read" Max? Oooo, that changes things a bit don't it.

Man, this is fun!

I'm thinking Faith would also win out over Max, mainly because she doesn't have much of a conscience and would fight as dirty as she had to.

I liked Kung Fu very much when it was on TV. Later, when I learned how the whole thing was Bruce Lee's conception, and how he was ethnically discriminated against in Hollywood I became not a fan. I even resented Carradine for taking the part, but then forgave him because he was just an actor looking for work. Bruce Lee was left with nothing in America, so he returned to Hong Kong. The rest is history, but Bruce would have made a terrific protagonist. They wouldn't have had to shoot fight scenes in slo-motion, as Bruce was the Kung-Fu choreographer-master of the ages. Not saying it would have been better, because the show itself was really something special back in 1971.

Er...popular misconception here. It was created by Ed Spielman. Take a look at this excerpt from Herbie Pilato's book The Kung Fu Book of Caine: The Complete Guide to TV's First Mystical Eastern Western (a GREAT book BTW, every fan should own it)

Quote:

Before the filming of the Kung Fu TV movie began, there was some discussion as to whether or not an Asian actor should play Kwai Chang Caine. Bruce Lee was considered for the role. In 1971, Bruce Lee wasn't the cult film hero he later became for his roles in Fists of Fury (1971), Enter the Dragon (1973), and Game of Death (1978). At that point he was best known as Kato on TV's Green Hornet (1966-1967). (Kung Fu guest actor Robert Ito reports that Lee hated the role of Kato because he "thought it was so subservient.") "In my eyes and in the eyes of Jerry Thorpe," says Harvey Frand, "David Carradine was always our first choice to play Caine. But there was some disagreement because the network was interested in a more muscular actor and the studio was interested in getting Bruce Lee." Frand says Lee wouldn't have really been appropriate for the series - despite the fact that he went on to considerable success in the martial arts film world. The Kung Fu show needed a serene person, and Carradine was more appropriate for the role. Ed Spielman agrees: "I liked David in the part. One of Japan's foremost Karate champions used to say that the only qualification that was needed to be trained in the martial arts was that you had to know how to dance. And on top of being an accomplished athlete and actor, David could dance." Nonetheless, grumbling from the Asian community would have made sense, given the fact that minor roles for Asian actors were almost nonexistent. James Hong, an actor on the show and ex-president of the Association of Asian/Pacific American Artists (AAPAA) says that at the time Asian actors felt that "if they were going to do a so-called Asian hero on Kung Fu, then why don't they hire an Asian actor to play the lead? But then the show went on, we realized that it was a great source of employment for the Asian acting community." In fact, Hong says, Carradine had a good relationship with the Asian community,

No way.
Max and River both (each) would wipe out Buffy, vamps, and lykans.

Vamps & Lycans yes, Buffy, most decidedly no (And I'm Max's biggest fan sayin' that). See Buffy take out the Ubervamp in season seven & get back to me on this.
