LESTER

I have noticed something that the characters of heroes do. it is invisable, a quiet force that seems to pass from one hero to the next. and it, my friends, is called the dumbass hat.
you can not see the dumbass hat, but like god, it is an all powerful force in the show, causing the characters of heroes to do remarkably stupid things. such as the time peter petrelli found out that his father arthur was alive, and aurther said " give me a hug, son."
Really? he fell for that one? i mean, after he gave dear old dad a hug and dad stole his powers, peter looked up at dad like " why?"
Why? because he's a bad guy.moron.
and another one, the electric chick.(i dont remember her name.) she hooks up with sylar because....why? so she can have angry-you-killed-my-dad-sex with him? and then when he kills her on the beach she says " i saw you change." and he's like " nope. I changed my mind, again!muhahaha! now open up!" the dumbass hat cost electric her life.
and speaking of sylar, holy moly batman. every couple of episodes someone wants ot redeem him, or make him a better man, or whatever. and he says " no...im still a bad guy." and their like " no, you can be a good guy! i've seen you change!" and then he kills again, and that person he kills/or is around but cant stop the says " but...i saw you change!" and then he rolls his eyes and says "nope.still a bad guy. i told you i was a bad guy. why do you keep thinking im a good guy?"
(It's because of the dumbass hat, sylar.)
and that whole episode where they had lost thier powers, man that was weak. i mean, the first eclispe gave them their powers, then the second one took their powers away. but how long do eclispe last? a few hours? maybe? and everyone is running around saying " mohinder, you must get our powers back! or i will kill you!" well, couldn't we just...wait for the eclispe to end?and if the powers dont come back, then yeah, start breakin out the test tubes or whatever. but lets wait the four hours or so that an eclispe usually last(am iwrong here? they cant last too long.)and maybe, just maybe, their powers might come back. so instead of having a spaz attack,(im looking at you angry hilbilly guy who beat up mohinder), just take a nap and see how you feel later.
and mohinder, holy crap. that dude messed up big time. he's normal, than he says " hey, lets test this serum that i have no idea what it will do on myself." and then he gets all super strong, which is cool. but then he cocoons that hot central american chick in a cocoon and keeps talking about how much he cares about her. dude, if she has half a brain( and stays the hell away from the dumbass hat.) she'll stay the hell away from you. you cocooned her dude. move on.
but in the end, i think there are two characters who, if not ever, at least they wear the dumbass hat the least. And those are clares adoptive parents, HRG and her A-Mom.
With A-Mom, im thinking of the episode where electric comes to claire's house and then claire and her have a big superpowered fight. at the end of one sceen, claire's on the floor(I think, it's been a while since i've seen this one) and electric is winning. but then A-Mom pours water on electric , and shorts her out. pure, simple, genious. when i saw that, i shouted " finally, someone's thinking!"
and HRG, i think he's my favorite character. yeah, he's a real jerk. he lies to his family, and erased their memories for years. but now, in season three, when the passing of the dumbass hat is reaching first season star trek:TNG levels, he seems to be the only one who refuses to wear the dumbass hat. several examples spring to mind.
1. when they were with that black dude who could make the vortexes(Vortexs?Vortexi?)and HRG put a gun to his head and said " Suck sylar into it or die!" that was smart. but then claire had to ruin it and say " no dad!" why? why shouldn't sylar die?
2. in a recent episode, where they lost their powers, the only good part was where after HRG got claire back home, he found Sylar and electric at that house, with his sniper rifle. he knew that had to be taken care of, so he bagan hunting them.( because since he uses the thinking part of his brain, he probably realized that after the eclispe was over sylar would get his powers back) and then he slit sylars throat, i cheered. not because is cool, but for gods sake he just needed to die. and yeah, HRG was probably about ten minutes too late,( cause sylars powers came back and he got better)but damn it, he tried.
and lastly, i think they passed up a great line. when nathan and peter are on that carribiean isle( hati? i dont remember) the black french due who was invincable said in french something to the effect of " i am a god." what nathan or peter should have said was " oh yeah? well real gods dont speak in french!"
So, gentle internet post reader, always remember: every once in a while, life and the people around you will want to make you do dumbass things. so just hold tight to your first season of heroes, grab your sniper rifle, and ask yourself " what would HRG Do?"

Awesome as always,
Lester

It says in Book Of Revelations 8:1

"When the lamb opened the third season, there was silence in TV heaven for about 43 non-adverted minutes in weekly installments."

They follow the dodgy second season with this? I have actually stopped watching, although I may catch up later.
I had such hopes....

dude, that was only the stuff i could think of at that moment. and your right, the dumbass hat is but a ruder and cruder version of the idiot ball. i was going for a variation of the dunce cap.
I thought it was kinda funny, the guy who wrote the article about the idiot ball said some of the exact same things i said about peter in season 3.
but yeah, do not pay for season 3 of heroes. if you really want to, thats between you, god and the state supreme court. I can summerize it here

Has any other show to become such phenom right out of the gate, and then tanked so hard so quickly?

I've essentially given up. I've downloaded all the eps I've missed, on the hope that I'll hear it's gotten better, and have them to catch up with. But I'm not holding my breath.

Side note - $4 million an episode! And they routinely run over-budget. Rediculously wastefull.

Anybody seeing any good sci-fi out there? anywhere? Trying to figure out what show isn't being ripped now. ...or are we throwing tomatoes at Keanu's face at our local cinema now?

There are lots of articles out there if you google "Heroes ratings", but here's one for example: http://www.tv.com/story/11705.html

That one only gets into the ratings drop since the beginning of this season. Looking at it overall, durring season 1, they averaged close to 15 million viewers per episode. By the middle of October, as the article above points out, they were down to 5.8 million.

Quite a drop.

As we do with the FIRST season of Firefly.

OP, Some of your points are valid, The length of eclipse as well as many other things DID get to me but… my expectations were always clear.

I am still trying to figure out how Heroes is anything more than a Comic Book Soap Opera. Never has been anything else. The first season (albeit superior) had NO comparisons to look back on to make these judgments and was much more mysterious to the viewer. However, season one was full of its own cheese. Maybe the people watching “Big bang Theory” or whatever it is knew their expectations of a sitcom or don’t covet it to an extreme that they squeeze the proverbial soap too hard. Hey, maybe it just delivers. IMO, I'm prolly not qualified to make the below opinions anyway, being that I own a total of 5 TV DVD series.

Stupid hat? Who in their right mind would trust Yosafbridge AT ALL for a "job" after she tried to KILL (YES, all of them) the crew. Yeah, in the end, the fixed it all better, but really... Can it be that different? Isn’t it simply just risk? I can go on with examples but I fear the level of QQ would flood us out. The stupid hat applies to all, “Cheesyness” is what Firefly had less of. Whedon has SUPERIOR dialogue and development, very few shows of ANY kind can touch him. Heroes doesn’t have that quality from end to end, prolly never will. Heroes also CONTINUOUSLY and conveniently forgets entire storylines to TRY and appease the masses. But I just DON’T think it’s a “throw away” or “give up on” show. You gonna tell me the Stargates, Dr. Who., Trek: , BSG, etc are all around better?

After reading a little of Frem’s link on the “Idiot Ball” (of which u see examples of Buffy, COMIC BOOKS, Torchwood, Dark Angel, Dr. Who, on and on) I considered how easy it is to counterpoint most anything in Sci-Fi.

Lets See:

Select to view spoiler:

Elle was a shut-in who may have had more hatred for her father than Sylar. I know they tried to ‘splain it away with an anger filled, shock fest, but… In the end she could have been just as scared of the world as she was of Sylar or could be pulling aforementioned Yosafbridge and using his arse after seeing that Papa was forcing them together anyway. (I mean literally in a sealed cage) Is it So sooooo crazy? IDK, ask the Branch Dividiens or Jonestown.

What would ever give Peter the idea that his dad was the end-all, be-all, bad guy? Not future Peter, but that Peter, at that time. He was only checking into Pinehearst. Trust his shady mom? Assume in ten seconds his dad has some sort of absorbing powers? Not be at least a tad confused? Love?

Loss of mass appeal is not surprising.

What I like to notice is how wrong we are on almost every negative post I see on “in so far” summations of the show. “No one ever dies” was repeated after the first few ep.s of S3, oh yeah, well, that’s not Nikki, nor Linderman, Parkman’s Dad, haven’t seen DL or Isaac come back, etc. How often are characters getting killed in the shows you are watching? Then it was OMG, not only is Claire Nathan’s daughter, but now Sylar is a brother. Oh Noes!!!! Nope, they insulted our intelligence again by giving it a 2 second explanation, “using u for mommy issues”. I LOVED THAT!!! I think Heroes came off in season one as a great start of a trilogy with movie-like quality. Then they had not only the writer’s strike, but uh oh the issue of sustainability. The writer’s biggest problem that even existed in season one is having a time traveler. People love to squash that stuff.

We only use the ratings excuse when we agree with it. But most of the time we are raging against the common masses of TV watchers. THE reason I like the show, is not that I can apply it to REAL characters or REAL WORLD situations, nor declare it great sci-fi. It is because I like to try to figure out 2 and 3 ep.s ahead. Again, superior sci-fi? No.

Not asking you to like it, just give me some good reasons it sucks now, not a well known writers nuance. Another sci-fi show bites the dust. Blame it on “idiot” writers or TV execs that will not give “good” sci-fi a chance. Guess I’m drinking too much Heroes Kool-Aid, NO WAIT!!! Its the FORMULA!!! *throws chair* ME NO LIKE ‘PUTER!!! *SMASH*

SINGATE

I've been saying this for years: people will pick apart with surgical precision anything that they do not agree with, at the same time they will overlook, ignore or deny similar faults in that which pleases them.

Do I believe season 3 is as good as it could be? No. Have there been some annoying inconsistencies? Yes. Is it is as good as season 1? No. I prefer to focus on the things I like when it comes to my entertainment as opposed to continuously bitching and nitpicking things that bother me. If a TV series goes too far from what I think it should be I simply stop watching and move on with my life.

It's not all just bitching and nit-picking. Sometimes, bad is bad. And while you may still like it, the overwhelming consensus, amongst fans and professionals, is that the show has taken a major dive in quality.

Well, please expand on that! This is a fan discussion board. ...or link the what "The Professionals" are saying. This is what I am gettign at. OP was about the "Idiot Ball". Tell me why YOU, the FAN, do not like it.

I clearly state I am not trying to MAKE anyone like it.

I often wonder what the normal "newness" in ratings dive is for all types of shows. This just interests me. Also, curious if Heroes is even savable now.

So, discuss... or someone answer one of my orignal questions. Is there ANY good sci-fi out there now, movie or TV. Are ANY "professionals" agreeing that something out there in the sci-fi realm is good. I wanna watch it. Not come back and say "oh look, how this is similar to Heroes"

Well, to answer the question: Opinions on good are always going the vary, but for me, LOST and BSG are still pretty damned great.

My problems with Heroes are all down to the writing. Especially the idoit ball (or hat, or whatever). Too frequently, the characters do thing completely against the way they have been developed, just so that the plot can advance. Examples would be Hiro opening his father's safe (after he had been developed as a character with great regard for the responsibilities bestowed uponj him), Noah thinking that Sylar wouldn't heal from a cut throat, the formerly sensitive/emotional Peter totally forgetting about the girl he abandoned in the future, and others.

And then there's the over-reliance on the prophetic visions of an apocalyptic future (once was cool, but every season??), and the blatant rip-offs from other stories (the super-power serum which The 4400 did 2 years ago, Mohinder-fly).

As for professionsals, well, here's an essay on the topic by Peter David, one of the top comic and scifi writers of the last 20 years: http://peterdavid.malibulist.com/archives/006626.html#more and here is an interview about the show with Brian Fuller (writer from season 1, and creator of Pushing Daisies): http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/12/exclusive-bryan.html and here are some poorly chosen wordfs from creator Tim Kring, trying to make excuses (which make little logical sense) for the problems on the show: http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2008/11/tim-k
ring-heroe.html
.

And of course, loosing 2/3 of the viewerrs says a lot on it's own.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."
