'Primeval' has overtaken 'Robin Hood' in the ratings race for series 3 and its outlook is good as the series build on its mythology to add depth to its prehistoric creature of the week episode format.

It its series 3 premiere, 'Primeval' earned a 5.27 million viewers and 23.7% share that bested 'Robin Hood's' 4.19 million and a 25.8% share.

For series 3, 'Primeval' changed the cast a bit by killing off Stephen Hart (James Murray) and bringing in the character of Sarah Page (Laila Rouass), and Egyptologist brought in to investigate the relationships between ancient myths and legends with the anomalies.

Also new is Christine Johnson (Belinda Stewart-Wilson) who will be Lester's new boss. Her character contributes to the the larger mythology surrounding the anomalies and its relationship with an ancient artifact that Helen Cutter is also after.

'Primeval' fans should rejoice that there are now 10 episodes for series 3 as opposed the 7 from series 2. Should this season perform well, I'm sure the number of episodes will increase further.

The series is actually okay if you like the creature of the week format, and now that it has a larger story to tell, it's just going to get better.

MAI

Oh that is good news. I like Primeval quite a bit, but I really thought it had been cancelled. Cause you know all the entertaining shows that actually make you think tend to get cancelled before their time.

Meanwhile, 'Robin Hood' has overtaken 'Primeval' in the massively implausible plot stakes.

I mean, in a normal show, you could pick nits about having (a) a full moon the night before a total solar eclipse and (b) a half moon clearly visible in the sky 5 minutes after a total solar eclipse... but with 'Robin Hood' that's just spurious pedantry.
