In Castle Season 1, Episode 8: Ghosts Monday night 4/27/2009, there was a Captain (Captain of an oil tanker) Pike paralyzed in a explosion confined to a wheelchair.

Did anybody else notice that? I thought it was so funny when I realized it.

Captain (former Captain of the starship Enterprise) Pike paralyzed and confined to futuristic wheelchair.
Star Trek the original series episode: The Cage

Hopefully, they do a commentary on the Castle episode. I'm wondering whose idea that was....actor Nathan (Castle) Fillion who we know is a sci-fi and Star Trek fan or the writers/producers etc.

Castle Airs Mondays 10 pm Eastern on ABC USA. Starring Nathan Fillion.

I think The Cage was actually the original series Pilot, but then had the Captain replaced with Kirk.

The Cage was the original series pilot. I bought the reconstructed episode on VHS. It was one damn fine episode, but was considered "too cerebral" by the network execs. Not to mention, a tough brunette female first officer? A FRIENDLY demonic-like alien who smiled??? Oh. The horror.

The second pilot ("Where No Man Has Gone Before") had Kirk as captain, switched Spock to first officer, and Majel Barrett* went from brunette to blonde to become Nurse Chapel. They tried to bring the cerebral part back in through Kirk's best bud/helmsman Gary Mitchell, but there was still a nice fight at the end where Kirk's uniform gets torn

That marked the very first time a second pilot was ordered by a network. Gene Roddenbery (The Great Bird of the Galaxy) was one lucky man, since he marketed the original pilot as "Wagon Train** to the Stars."

Eh... no. It wasn't. But The Great Bird gets props for fighting hard for his creation.

*Majel Barrett was Roddenberry's wife, and enjoyed returning in Star Trek: Next Generation as Deanna Troi's mother, in addition to being the computer's voice.

** For the whippersnappers among us, Wagon Train was a western series that was enjoying obscenely good ratings at the time Star Trek was originally pitched. I'm not old enough to have seen that in first run, but I remember watching the reruns when I was a kid.

Thus endeth the Star Trek Seminar. I was raised on those reruns as a kid... I think my red slip is starting to show. Y'gotta understand your science fiction television history.

WOW! I didn't notice... Shoot! That's what I get for doing internship work and watching Castle at the same time.

I did notice that during last week's episode, while Rick was on the shooting range, he was wearing a brown suede jacket. And he got that *LOOK* that Mal got right before he shot the cable that was trying to drag Jayne back to the Reaver ship in the movie.

Rick Castle is better at schmoozing women than Mal was, though. Wonder which writer Nathan paid off to get that little character quirk?

Heh, I noticed Captain Pike too. Too bad his first name wasn't Chris (or Jim, even).
