The remake of Day The Earth Stood Still seriously blew chunks.
And I was watching it like I never saw the original. Plot holes galore, unlikely government actions, dopey Gort particle/insects...

Please peeps, do what I didn't and avoid this mess.

Huh, two days ago I went to Burlington with a friend and he told me the movie was great and wanted to loan it to me. I haven't seen the movie yet.

Just be prepared for a severe overuse of Spielbergian track-ins as if every moment was supposed to be awesome, and uneven mortal/superhuman moments from Keannu.

I will borrow the movie and watch it, but partly because I turned off my television service.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I have absolutely no interest in watching it, so I didn't need your warning.

Just have a backup flick to wash away the bad experience.
(If you go in thinking it's as terrible as I indicate, you prolly won't hate it so much.)

I did not see it. Heard from several sources it was bad. Prefer the memory of the original.

Good for you, man! Wish I had the courage to take that step...

ETA: Haven't seen the re-make, but all the buzz over it for the last year or so reminds me that I need to see the original again...been many years.

TRAVELER

Well I made the mistake of seeing the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. They overdid everything. An armour plated stagecoach. Who ever heard of an amour plated stage coach. All yo have to do is shot the horses. I does not take a much intelligence to figure that out. Can you imagine how long a team a horse would last pulling an amour plated stagecoach. And the end made no sense to me. So I am shying away from remakes.

Most remakes suck. Did ya see Planet Of The Apes? I did. Two hours of my time I wish I could bill the studio for.

That is how I felt about 3:10 to Yuma. Two hours of my life I will never get back again.

RIPWASH

3:10 to Yuma was, indeed, a GINORMOUS waste of time.

I just don't know what to make of re-makes. Most of the time, they're not worth the time or effort put into "updating" a classic.

One of my favorite movies is "The Italian Job" which is considered a re-make. Though not entirely faithful to the original, it was an enjoyable flick.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

STORYMARK

The key is to remake BAD movies, not good ones. Find the ones with good premises, that didn't quite work for whatever reason - then fix what didn't work for the new one.

Sadly, it's all about capitalizing on an easily-marketed name, rather than telling a good story.

Some remakes are good though. Though it's old now, The Thing is one of my favorite films ever, and it was a remake. I prefer the newer Assault on Precinct 13, as well. A more recent example of a kick-ass remake would be The Departed, which I also really like.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

I feel your pain. Ya know what saved me from feeling totally abused and degraded? This line:

Quote:

Your monkey launches at 1600 hours!*

Humor - especially humor of the unintended variety - is indeed nature's balm.

*It's especially humorous for me because, since I originally saw it, I've somehow got the guy who spoke the above line confused with Fred Thompson...and as we all know his monkey barely launched at all.
