Well yer in for a treat. It really is a good movie. Very good characters, great action, great effects. Overall an A grade, from me. Far from perfect, but very fun and enjoyable.

And on a side-note for ya, Chris. I have caught a couple of the remastered Treks on the tube lately and I've been very impressed with the visual quality of those as well. Whoever did the remastering earned their paycheck for that job, I tell ya.

Yeah it was a great show and it was nice to hear some real views of what the set was really like. It was great when Walter Koenig ran by him and he almost didn't spot him!! Fantastic stuff. I did think the get together at the end was crap though. It didn't look like any of the cast were even there at the same time. Poor but then he only had 10 days to get them together. I wish they'd give him more time and do a proper job. Still a great show.

Just come back from seeing it &&, quite simple, WOW. I've never seen any of the original Trek, but I'm in the process of hunting some down now to watch during my study leave (y' know, coz thats what study leave is meant for :evil:) I thought it was excellent, and I didn't realise that Leonard Nimoy was the one playing 'old Spock' until my Dad told me after the movie. That, my friends, was a brilliant touch.

I agree with everything everyone above has said, I can't think of any complaints.

Actually, the suites wanted Spock/Uhura, they'd rather it was not black/white, but Shat said if theres kissen' to be done... it's gonna be done by me. The day after the kiss the suits wanted t reshoot with Kirk holding her in his arms and looking into the camera instead of kissing her. Well, Shat does that but when he looks into the camera hes all crosseyed. They decided to go with the kiss. Plus when I went to the movie a saecond time I saw the Tribbles.

Yeah, I even unscrewed the handle to fill it w/clay to balance the weight, and added the indicator light in between the controls of the hand phaser (that was left out of the "dummy" phasers upon which part of this design was based, obviously).

I liked the fact that they held their phasers like, well, guns, rather than, say, a water hose nozzle or a T.V remote.

I was pretty impressed with the film overall, and I was kinda glad they did the whole thing Nimoy thing. The story needed someone to come along and explain exactly what the hell was going on, and I thought Nimory did that job very well.

Saw this Wednesday night and I have to say I was disappointed. The way everyone went on about it I was expecting something amazing, but I found it to be just a typical summer blockbuster.

On the plus side I thought the humour was a welcome addition. I always thought Star Trek could use a little more of it, especially after seeing how it could work well in other sci-fi dramas like Stargate and Firefly. I thought that Urban stole the show as McCoy.

I felt the villain was weak though, and I love a good villain, so this really brought the movie down for me. Bana probably did the best he could with what was there, but I didn't find the character interesting.

There were also plenty of moments that felt out of place, and I may be alone here, but I find using CG for the sake of CG boring. The space battles were fine, but some of the Star Wars type monsters and aliens felt out of place to me.

The trouble is if I were to consider the film as a seperate property from Star Trek, I would probably give it a 6-7/10, but as a Star Trek movie I see it more as a 5/10 based on what I come to expect from good Trek.

SPOILERS below . . . . . . . . .

One problem I had with the film was a personal one. I have just lost my mother, so the scene in which Spock loses his really hurt. I went into the movie hoping to escape reality, so having it hit home really drained a lot of the enjoyment out of it. Maybe I'll feel differently later, but as it stands, I was as disappointed after this one as I was with Nemesis (Both for reasons of hype I should add. Nemesis with the even numbered movie expectation and this one because of all the advertising).

JUST got back from seeing it... my 10 year old son ( a Shat purist) had reservations, but my Wife & I loved nearly every moment. They pulled it out of the hat- a trick I almost didn't think possible. I expected to like it, but not to want to see it again the day after my first viewing. I have a problem with Vulcan's fate, but what the heck. The race is still there.

Interesting. I can totally see why you and my Son come away from the film ultra 'meh'ed. Part of me has a laundry list of "They messed with the ship/the phasers/Uhura & Spock/ Vulcan/ etc." I guess I just realize that this is the only way to get more Trek, and I'll take it, given the creativity and obvious appreciation the film makers had for the project. Sure, it went a different way than I would have, but I can say that about most stuff (HATED Dark Knight, btw:evil:).

I actually agree with your points Merc. It was not an amazing movie, just a damn fun summer blockbuster. The main reason I think a lot of people(myself included) were so pleased immediately after seeing the movie was because we were so relieved it didn't completely suck. I should have reined it in so as to not get other peoples hopes up. I've had some time now to really think about it and I still like it, regardless of it's flaws.

The villain and core plot were rather bland, but barely passable and the humor really was what really redeemed the film. The humor and the homages to TOS and the TOS crew Films. Compared to most of the other remakes, reboots, sequels/prequels and re-imaginings of classic scifi/adventure lately... this one was indeed a great movie. But as just a movie, it was only a fun escape, still worth another viewing though.

And on a serious note, I'm sorry for your loss, Merc2k.

Perfectly put Singate, I agree completely. I loved it and really respect what they've done here to please fans old and new - the film DOES have a soul and it's everything I wanted it to be and nothing I didn't. I think the minority of hard core Trekkers (who in my opinion take themselves too seriously - I'm a TrekkIE and proud of it) who dislike this film are really just pissed that "this thing of ours" is popular now in a way that they can't call it quite their own in the same way. Who cares? It's fun, it's great and it's really entertaining. And the casting, as everyone has noted pretty much, could nary be better.

Weakest point btw is Giacchino's new theme - just not special or memorable enough, sounding like pretty much every summer superhero flick.

New Spocks ears were also 2.2mm bigger than in TOS. :naughty:

Glad you liked it Chris. To me, this is what a summer blockbuster should be. It does have it's flaws (what doesn't?) but they are easily pass-overable and any cosmetic/plot changes can all be answered by the alternate timeline. Like others I'm not a big fan of the new look Enterprise, both interior and exterior, but it's by no means bad, the basic shape and look are still there.

And as you say if this is the way for more original crew Trek, then 'beam me up'. (Sorry, but somebody had to type it).

I couldn't agree with you more! The Dark Knight was very well done, but it just isn't the kind of movie I want to watch over and over again. Batman Begins, Ironman, and the last Hulk movie are movies I own because I will watch them over and over again. This new Trek will also make that list when it comes out on disc!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.
