Keep the Shiny side up

Howard Tayler, creator of the web-comic Schlock Mercenary, has this to say.

Quote:

I’ll say this much: If you’re a cynical movie-goer, tired of franchise movies, embarrassed at having ever been a Trekker/Trekkie/Trek-fan, but you loved Serenity, you need to reward Paramount Pictures’ good behavior by seeing this film.

If Star Trek and Serenity were to walk into a bar… well, I think we’d see a drinking game between Browncoats and Vulcans. There’d be too much mutual respect for a fight.

GREAT! And you know.. a good point.. if ST does well, then sci fi may be looked upon favorably.. and well you know mor of these character driven space flicks could be greenlit.. I heard they have already green lit ST 2.. so why not Sernity 2??

Lets give the genre some love.. besides, it is worth seeing oin its own right...

This link gives homage to Serenity for the success of the new Star Trek. The shout out is in the last few minutes of the audio link - but well worth the listen.

With the event of a new Star Trek movie, worth reading (or pondering if you've already read) "The Fascist Ideology of Star Trek -- and Firefly, the anti-Trek"

Seemed like it was more like the last minute and a half or two minutes, but you're right, it was definitely worth a listen to the whole thing. Not only does it mention Serenity as enabling the success (and film-making methods) of the new Trek, it also compares captains in a not-uncomplimentary way! :) Thanks for finding this; I liked the whole 16 minute podcast, though it's *very* spoiler-filled, so I don't advise listening before one has seen the movie.

Operative: "Its worse than you know..." Mal: "It usually is."

Good read! Thanks, somehow I had not seen that!

Style of Cinematography in particular...The motion of the camera gives the same documentary feel as in Firefly and Serenity...

Lens flares , also reminiscent of the Serenifly style , used to a distracting degree in this case...

Then there's single-combat between Kirk and an adversary , on a platform , ala Mal and the Operative , in Serenity...

A space battle , nearing planetside , also much like one in Serenity...

Stuff like that...

Let these folk 'splain it , also...

hmmm interesting. BUT I still think that if the sci fi franchise does well.. it could bode well for another Serenity... maybe I am hoping against hope, but browncoats are known for that and I choose to think it could be fgood for OUR verse...

SHINYGOODGUY

Thanks for posting Geez.......this guy really says a lot in a few short paragraphs (the Captain would appreciate his take).

Gonna see it tomorrow (didn't want to deal with the weekend crowds. Last time, with the Dark Knight, I had an unpleasant experience with an overly aggressive female; who came this close to getting a boot in the ass, over a seat I was holding for my son).

I've heard nothing but positive things, except of course the hate spewing from die-hard Trekkers. If you guys get a chance watch the SNL skit on Weekend Update from Saturday's show. Funny stuff. I will not say more, just go see - I believe it's on Hulu.

ST odes to Serenity, some already mentioned.
Lense flares, throughout, the biggest thing I noticed right away.
When Kelvin crew get spaced, sound disappears.
Mechanical sound effects and cocking motions, ala Mal's guns and Vera. this time its the Phasers - closeup of phaser action when Kirk is covering Spock in the Nerada's "cargo bay" scene.
The camera's CGI shake, zoom, quickpan, overfilling the screen with action, motion, effects.
